Abstract
AbstractThe asymmetric ring opening of azlactones via dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) is investigated by contrasting thioureas incorporating 1-arylethyl substituents against their more acidic trifluoromethylated analogs. All the catalysts under study outperform Takemoto’s thiourea because of the inclusion of an additional chiral center. However, the difference in yield and selectivity between the fluorinated and non-fluorinated catalysts is minimal. We explain this observation by analysis of calculated transition states. Our findings show that the hydrogen bond (HB) between the NH linked to the 1-arylethyl and the negatively charged oxygen in the benzyloxy ion is the longest in the HB network, whereas the HB between the ammonium group and the same oxygen atom is the shortest. Thus, the substituents and the HB donor ability of this chiral fragment attached to the thiourea are not important in the reaction.

Abstract
We evaluated thiourea organocatalysts that incorporate a chiral group which includes a trifluoromethyl moiety and contrasted their performance with non-fluorinated analogs. The comparison between such systems allows the direct study of the NH acidity of a thiourea bonded to an aliphatic substituent. In principle, -CF3 systems feature an enhanced hydrogen bond (HB) donor capacity that is undoubtedly beneficial for HB-catalysis applied to the Baylis-Hillman reaction. We found that the thiourea substituted on both nitrogens with this group accelerates this reaction like Schreiner's thiourea. On the other hand, we observed a different behavior in reactions promoted by bifunctional catalysts (thiourea-primary amine). In the Michael addition of isobutyraldehyde to methyl benzylidenepyruvate, the -CF3 containing catalysts were better than the -CH3 systems, whereas the conjugate addition to N-phenylmaleimide showed the opposite behavior. Theoretical calculations of the transition states indicated that the phenylethyl group in fluorinated and non-fluorinated compounds have different kinds of interactions with the electrophile. These interactions are responsible for a different arrangement of the electrophile and thereby the selectivity of the catalyst. Therefore, it cannot be generalized that in all cases NH acidity correlates with the performance of the catalyst, particularly, with aliphatic substituents that unlike the aromatic ones possess groups that are outside the plane of the thiourea.

Abstract
An asymmetric decarboxylative 1,4-addition of malonic acid half thioesters (MAHTs) to 2-aryl-substituted vinyl sulfones has been developed, yielding adducts with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 97 % ee). In view of tuning pKa values, a quinine-based benzyl-substituted thiourea was designed and demonstrated as the most efficient catalyst. The enantioselective synthesis of 3-monofluorinated analogues of 3-methyl indanone and (+)-turmerone has been accomplished from decarboxylative 1,4-addition adducts with satisfactory results.

Abstract
An expedient, solvent and catalyst free strategy for the synthesis of sugar based bis(indolyl)methanes and indolyl nitroalkanes has been developed. Further, the nitroalkanes were converted to novel isoxazolines and isoxazoles by nitrile oxides cycloaddition.

Abstract
An efficient diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of polyfunctionalized indanes bearing four contiguous stereogenic centres in generally very short reaction times and sub-mol% squaramide catalyst loadings has been developed. The novel methodology creates a maximum of two stereocentres per bond formation via an organocatalytic Michael-Henry domino reaction.

Abstract
The first enantioselective Michael reaction of β-aryl-α-ketophosphonates and nitroalkenes has been brealized by using a new bifunctional Takemoto-type thiourea catalyst. The primary Michael adducts obtained were converted in situ to the corresponding amides through the aminolysis. High yields, excellent diastereoselectivities (>95:5 dr), and good enantioselectivities (up to 81% ee) have been achieved for the corresponding α ,β-disubstituted γ-nitroamides. This reaction againdemon strated that α-ketophosphonates are interesting pronucleophiles that can be used as amide surrogates in organocatalyzed reactions.
