Abstract
Over the past three decades, chiral phase-transfer catalysts (PTCs) have emerged as highly successful organocatalysts in a diverse range of asymmetric reactions. A substantial number of chiral PTCs have now already been discovered and utilized in dependable routes to enantioenriched products. These extend beyond the classical cationic PTCs with the emergence of anionic phase-transfer catalysis and hydrogen-bonding phase-transfer catalysis providing new asymmetric synthetic approaches. Nevertheless, the application level of chiral PTCs in both academic and industrial processes is below our expectation. This Review highlights the notable advances in chiral PTCs, including challenges, limitations and efforts to overcome them. Following this, the potential for sustainable chiral PTCs is described with a focus on using photocatalysed, flow and electrochemical synthesis.

Abstract
The first asymmetric total synthesis of the monoterpenoid indole alkaloid arboduridine has been accomplished. The tricyclic A/B/D ring system was constructed by an enantioselective Michael reaction followed by intramolecular nucleophilic addition. Intramolecular α-amination of a ketone forged the piperidine ring, while a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reaction was used to form the pyrrolidine ring. A reduction cyclization cascade led to formation of the tetrahydrofuran ring.

Abstract
Chiral phosphonium salt catalysis, traditionally classified as a type of phase transfer catalysis, has proven to be a powerful strategy for the stereoselective preparation of diverse optically active molecules. However, there still remain numerous forbidding issues of reactivity and selectivity in such well-known organocatalysis system. Accordingly, the development of new and high-performance phosphonium salt catalysts with unique chiral backbones is highly desirable, yet challenging. This Minireview describes the prominent endeavours in the development of a new family of chiral peptide-mimic phosphonium salt catalysts with multiple hydrogen-bonding donors and their applications in a plethora of enantioselective synthesis during the past few years. Hopefully, this minireview will pave a way for further developing much more efficient and privileged chiral ligands/catalysts featuring exclusively catalytic ability in asymmetric synthesis.

Abstract
Synergistic catalysis has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for stereodivergent formation of Csp3 -Csp3 bonds bearing vicinal stereocenters. Despite the many successes that have been achieved in this field, stereodivergent Csp3 -Csp3 coupling reactions involving stabilized nucleophiles remain challenging because of the competing single-catalysis pathway. Herein, we report a synergistic palladium/phase-transfer catalyst system that enables diastereodivergent Csp3 -Csp3 coupling reactions of 1,3-dienes with stabilized nucleophile oxindoles. Both the syn and anti coupling products, bearing quaternary and tertiary vicinal stereocenters, could be selectively produced in good yields with high enantio- and diastereoselectivities. Non-covalent activation of the stabilized nucleophile via chiral ion pair in a biphasic system is a crucial success factor in achieving diastereodivergence.

Abstract
A series of trifunctional BINAP-based monophosphonium phase-transfer catalysts were developed and used in the asymmetric addition of α-diazomethylphosphonates to vinylogous imines formed in situ from sulfonylindoles. This methodology tolerates a broad scope of 2-unsubstituted sulfonyl indoles, which have seldom achieved high enantioselectivities in similar asymmetric reactions with other nucleophiles. Chiral 3-sec-alkyl-substituted indoles containing α-diazophosphonate were afforded in up to 99% yield and 95% ee.

Abstract
An asymmetric 1,6-conjugate addition to presynthesized δ-aryl-δ-cyano-disubstituted para-quinone methides through bifunctional phosphonium-amide-promoted ion-pair catalysis for acyclic all-carbon quaternary stereocenter construction has been described. Both acyclic and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls participate in the asymmetric alkylation reaction, furnishing a wide array of diarylmethanes bearing a single acyclic quaternary carbon stereocenter or vicinal cyclic and acyclic quaternary carbon stereocenters with high efficiency and excellent stereoselectivity. Computational studies elucidate the origin of the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Efficient access to two enantiomers of one chiral compound is critical for the discovery of drugs. However, it is still a challenging problem owing to the difficulty in obtaining two enantiomers of one chiral catalyst. Here, we report a general method to obtain both enantiomeric products via fine tuning the hydrogen-bonding interactions of phosphonium salts. Amino acid derived phosphonium salts and dipeptide derived phosphonium salts exhibited different properties for controlling the transition state, which could efficiently promote the Michael addition reaction to give opposite configurations of products with high yields and enantioselectivities. Preliminary investigations on the mechanism of the reaction and applications of the products were also performed.

Abstract
A class of C2-symmetric chiral spirocyclic phase-transfer catalysts based on tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobiindane scaffold was synthesized from commercially available bisphenol A in 12 steps with 22-25% total yields, which features a more rigid and stable backbone and smaller dihedral angles and can be easily modified. These catalysts show high catalytic performance in the asymmetric alkylation of tert-butyl glycinate Schiff base at only 2 mol % catalyst loading, giving the target products with up to 92% yield and 98% ee.

Abstract
The first enantioselective aza-Darzens reaction of cyclic imines with α-halogenated ketones was realized under mild reaction conditions by using amino-acid-derived bifunctional phosphonium salts as phase-transfer promoters. A variety of structurally dense tri- and tetrasubstituted aziridine derivatives, containing benzofused heterocycles as well as spiro-structures, were readily synthesized in high yields with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities (up to >20:1 d.r. and >99.9 % ee). The highly functionalized aziridine products could be easily transformed into different classes of biologically active compounds.

Abstract
Asymmetric phase-transfer catalysis has been widely applied into organic synthesis for efficiently creating chiral functional molecules. In the past decades, chiral phase-transfer catalysts with proton donating groups are emerging as an extremely significant strategy in the design of novel catalysts, and a large number of enantioselective reactions have been developed. In particular, the proton donating groups including phenol, amide, and (thio)-urea exhibited unique properties for cooperating with the phase-transfer catalysts, and great advances on this field have been made in the past few years. This review summarizes the seminal works on the design, synthesis, and applications of chiral phase-transfer catalysts with strong hydrogen bonding interactions.

Abstract
Asymmetric Mannich-type addition of 3,5-disubstituted-4-nitroisoxazoles to isatin-derived Boc-protected imines has been realized by using 0.01 equiv of amide phosphonium salt as a phase transfer catalyst. Our current methodology allows for the formation of 3-isoxazolylmethyl-substituted 3-aminooxindoles in excellent yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities. The practical value of this methodology was exemplified by a gram-scale synthesis of 5an, a key intermediate for the formal synthesis (+)-AG-041R.

Abstract
Although chiral quaternary ammonium and phosphonium salts are commonly used for asymmetric organocatalysis, the catalytic ability of chiral tertiary sulfonium salts has yet to be demonstrated in asymmetric synthesis. Herein, we show that chiral bifunctional trialkylsulfonium salts catalyze highly enantioselective conjugate additions of 3-substituted oxindoles to maleimides under base-free neutral phase-transfer conditions.
