Abstract
The reactivity of carbonyl functional groups largely depends on the substituents on the carbon atom. Reversal of the commonly accepted order of reactivity of different carbonyl compounds requires novel synthetic approaches. Achieving selective reduction will enable the transformation of carbon resources such as plastic waste, carbon dioxide and biomass into valuable chemicals. In this Review, we explore the reduction of less reactive carbonyl groups in the presence of those typically considered more reactive. We discuss reductions, including the controlled reduction of ureas, amides and esters to aldehydes, as well as chemoselective reductions of carbonyl groups, including the reduction of ureas over carbamates, amides and esters; the reduction of amides over esters, ketones and aldehydes; and the reduction of ketones over aldehydes.

Abstract
Catalytic methods to couple alkene and amine feedstocks are valuable in synthetic chemistry. The direct carbonylative coupling of alkenes and amines holds promise as a perfectly atom-economical approach to amide synthesis, but general methods remain underdeveloped. Herein, we report an alkene hydroaminocarbonylation catalyzed by unmodified, inexpensive cobalt carbonyl under mild conditions and low pressure promoted by light. Silane addition after the reaction enables sequential cobalt-catalyzed amide reduction, constituting a formal alkene hydroaminomethylation. These methods exhibit exceptional scope across both alkene and amine components with high chemo- and regioselectivity and proceed efficiently even in the absence of solvent. The formation of a hydridocobalt through photodissociation of a carbonyl ligand is proposed to enable catalytic activity under mild conditions, which addresses a long-standing challenge in catalysis.

Abstract
Here, commercially available Co2(CO)8 was utilized as an efficient catalyst for chemodivergent synthesis of pyrrolidines and pyrrolidones from levulinic acid and aromatic amines under slightly different hydrosilylation conditions. 1.5 and 3 equiv of phenylsilane selectively yielded pyrrolidone and pyrrolidine, respectively. Various ketoacids and amines were successfully tested. Plausible mechanism involves the condensation of levulinic acid and amine to form an imine, which cyclizes to 3-pyrrolidin-2-one followed by reduction to pyrrolidone. The final reduction of pyrrolidone gave pyrrolidine.

Abstract
The mild catalytic partial reduction of amides to imines has proven to be a challenging synthetic transformation, with many transition metals directly reducing these substrates to amines. Herein, we report a mild, catalytic method for the semireduction of both secondary and tertiary amides via zirconocene hydride catalysis. Utilizing just 5 mol % of Cp2ZrCl2, the reductive deoxygenation of secondary amides is demonstrated to furnish a diverse array of imines in up to 94% yield with excellent chemoselectivity and without the need for glovebox handling. Moreover, a novel reductive transamination of tertiary amides is also achievable when the catalytic protocol is carried out in the presence of a primary amine at room temperature, providing access to an expanded assortment of imines in up to 98% yield. Through slight procedural tuning, the single-flask conversion of amides to imines, aldehydes, amines or enamines is feasible, including multicomponent syntheses.

Abstract
Transfer hydrogenation (TH) is a powerful synthetic tool in the production of secondary alcohols from ketones by using a non-H2 hydrogen source along with metal catalysts. Among homogeneous catalysts, Ru(II) complexes are the most efficient catalysts. In our research, six novel ruthenium(II) complexes bearing bipyridine-based ligands [Ru(L1)Cl2] (1), [Ru(L1)(PPh3)Cl]Cl (2) and [Ru(L2)Cl2] (3) and N-heterocyclic carbene-supported pyridine (NCN) ligands [RuCp(L3)]PF6 (4), [RuCp*(L3)]PF6 (5), and [Ru(p-cymene)(L3)Cl]PF6 (6) (where L1 = 6,6'-bis(aminomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, L2 = 6,6'-bis(dimethylaminomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine and L3 = 1,3-bis(2-methylpyridyl)imidazolium bromide) were synthesised and characterised by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, and X-ray crystallography. The catalytic transfer hydrogenation of 28 ketones in 2-propanol at 80 °C in the presence of KOtBu (5 mol%) was demonstrated and the effect of ligands is highlighted. The results show that catalyst 1 exhibits improved TH efficiency compared to the commercially available Milstein catalyst and displays higher catalytic activity than 2 due to the steric effect from PPh3. From a combination of kinetic data and Eyring analysis, a zero-order dependence on the acetophenone substrate is observed, implying a rate-limiting hydride transfer step, leading to the proposed inner-sphere hydride transfer mechanism.

Abstract
A terminal [Ni-OH] complex 1, supported by triflamide-functionalized NHC ligands, catalyzes the hydrosilylative reduction of a range of primary amides into primary amines in good to excellent yields under base-free conditions with key functional group tolerance. Catalyst 1 is also effective for the reduction of a variety of tertiary and secondary amides. In contrast to literature reports, the reactivity of 1 towards amide reduction follows an inverse trend, i.e., 1° amide > 3° amide > 2° amide. The reaction does not follow a usual dehydration pathway.

Abstract
The development of efficient methodologies for production of amines attracts significant attention from synthetic chemists, because amines serve as essential building blocks in the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals, natural products, and agrochemicals. In this regard, deoxygenative reduction of amides to amines by means of transition-metal-catalyzed hydrogenation, hydrosilylation, and hydroboration reactions represents an attractive alternative to conventional wasteful techniques based on stoichiometric reductions of the corresponding amides and imines, and reductive amination of aldehydes with metal hydride reagents. The relatively low electrophilicity of the amide carbonyl group makes this transformation more challenging compared to reduction of other carbonyl compounds, and the majority of the reported catalytic systems employ precious metals such as platinum, rhodium, iridium, and ruthenium. Despite the application of more abundant and environmentally benign base metal (Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) complexes for deoxygenative reduction of amides have been developed to a lesser extent, such catalytic systems are of great importance. This review is focused on the current achievements in the base-metal-catalyzed deoxygenative hydrogenation, hydrosilylation, and hydroboration of amides to amines. Special attention is paid to the design of base metal catalysts and the mechanisms of such catalytic transformations.

Abstract
The reaction of (4-methyl-pyridin-2-iloxy)ditertbutylsilane (NSitBu-H, 1) with [IrCl(coe)2]2 affords the iridium(iii) complex [Ir(H)(Cl)(κ2-NSitBu)(coe)] (2), which has been fully characterized including X-ray diffraction studies. The reaction of 2 with AgCF3SO3 leads to the formation of species [Ir(H)(CF3SO3)(κ2-NSitBu)(coe)] (3). The iridium complexes 2 and 3 are effective catalysts for the reduction of formamides with HSiMe2Ph. The selectivity of the reduction process depends on the catalyst. Thus, by using complex 2, with a chloride ancillary ligand, it has been possible to selectively obtain the corresponding O-silylated hemiaminal by reaction of formamides with one equivalent of HSiMe2Ph, while complex 3, with a triflate ligand instead of chloride, catalyzed the selective reduction of formamides to the corresponding methylamine.

Abstract
The hydrosilylation of unsaturated compounds homogeneously catalyzed by cobalt complexes has gained considerable attention in the last years, aiming at substituting precious metal-based catalysts. In this study, the catalytic activity of well-characterized CoII and CoI complexes of the pToldpbp ligand is demonstrated in the hydrosilylation of 1-octene with phenylsilane. The CoI complex is the better precatalyst for the mentioned reaction under mild conditions, at 1 mol-% catalyst, 1 h, room temperature, and without solvent, yielding 84 % of octylphenylsilane. Investigation of the substrate scope shows lower performance of the catalyst in styrene hydrosilylation, but excellent results with allylbenzene (84 %) and acetophenone (> 99 %). This catalytic study contributes to the field of cobalt-catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions and shows the first example of catalysis employing the dpbp ligand in combination with a base metal.

Abstract
Chemo- and site-selective hydrosilylation of α- or β-hydroxy amides using organocatalyst B(C6F5)3 and commercially available hydrosilanes is described. This transformation is operative under mild conditions and tolerates a wide range of functional groups. The reaction was applied for selective reduction of a specific amide group of the therapeutically important cyclic peptide cyclosporin A, demonstrating the potential usefulness of this catalytic method in late-stage structural transformations of drug lead molecules.

Abstract
Novel well-defined NNP and PNP manganese pincer complexes have been synthetized and fully characterized. The catalyst Mn-2 containing an imidazolyaminolphosphino ligand shows high activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of a wide range of secondary and tertiary amides to the corresponding alcohols and amines, under relatively mild conditions. For the first time, more challenging substrates like primary aromatic amides including an actual herbicide can also be hydrogenated using this earth-abundant metal-based pincer catalyst.

Abstract
An inexpensive nickel(II) catalyst and a hydrosilane were used for the efficient reductive defunctionalization of aryl and heteroaryl esters through a decarbonylative pathway. This versatile method could be used for the removal of ester and amide functional groups from various organic molecules. Moreover, a scale-up experiment and a synthetic application based on the use of a removable carboxylic acid directing group highlight the usefulness of this reaction.

Abstract
A broad range of secondary and tertiary amides has been hydrogenated to the corresponding amines under mild conditions using an in situ catalyst generated by combining [Ru(acac)3], 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane (Triphos) and Yb(OTf)3. The presence of the metal triflate allows to mitigate reaction conditions compared to previous reports thus improving yields and selectivities in the desired amines. The excellent isolated yields of two scale-up experiments corroborate the feasibility of the reaction protocol. Control experiments indicate that, after the initial reduction of the amide carbonyl group, the reaction proceeds through the reductive amination of the alcohol with the amine arising from collapse of the intermediate hemiaminal.
