Abstract
A simple, mild, and environmentally benign regioselective oxy-iodination of 1-aryl/alkyl butadienes has been developed. While styrenes have been explored previously, this work on dienes has been highly regioselective and metal-free in oxy-iodination following Markovnikov's rule. The oxy-iodination products were obtained in good to excellent yields using various co-solvents (H2O, MeOH, EtOH, AcOH, etc.). In addition, the halohydrins have been useful building blocks in the synthesis of various functionalized keto iodides and azido alcohols.

Abstract
![]()
A bienzymatic cascade
has been designed and optimized to obtain
enantiopure chlorohydrins starting from the corresponding 1-aryl-2-chlorobut-2-en-1-ones.
For the synthesis of these α-chloroenones, a two-step sequence
was developed consisting of the allylation of the corresponding aldehyde
with 3-dichloroprop-1-ene, followed by oxidation and further isomerization.
The selective cooperative catalytic system involving ene-reductases
(EREDs) and alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) afforded the desired optically
active chlorohydrins under mild reaction conditions in excellent conversions
(up to >99%) and selectivities (up to >99:1 diastereomeric ratio
(dr),
>99% enantiomeric excess (ee)).

Abstract
An efficient redox deracemization of the phosphonic ester substituted 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-one (DHPM) derivatives is described. The one-pot deracemization strategy consisted of the oxidization to destroy the stereocenter center and the following asymmetric transfer hydrogenation to regenerate the chiral carbon center with the vicinal phosphonic ester group, providing a series of optically active phosphonate substituted DHPMs with up to 96% ee.

Abstract
A highly diastereo- and enantioselective Ir-catalyzed hydrogenation of unfunctionalized 2,3-disubstituted quinolines, especially 3-alkyl-2-arylquinolines, has been realized. The success of this hydrogenation is ascribed to the use of a structurally fine-tuned chiral phosphine-phosphoramidite ligand with a (Sa)-3,3'-dimethyl H8-naphthyl moiety and (Rc)-1-phenylethylamine backbone. The hydrogenation displayed broad functional group tolerance, thus furnishing a wide range of optically active 2,3-disubstituted tetrahydroquinolines in up to 96% ee and with perfect cis-diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
Since the pioneering independent reports of Akiyama and Terada, the use of chiral phosphoric acids (CPAs) and derivatives as a versatile tool for asymmetric synthesis with good reactivity, regioselectivity, diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity has emerged, forming an important part of the implementation of asymmetric counteranion-directed catalysis reported to date. In these achievements, the combination of metals with CPAs has enabled various catalytic modes beyond the scope of typical acid catalysis, such as relay catalysis, ion-pairing catalysis, and binary acid catalysis. The first-row transition metals (Sc-Zn) are considered to be sustainable transition metals and have received a great deal of attention. These naturally abundant metals display excellent Lewis acidity and function as powerful redox catalysts in synthesis involving both one and two-electron transfers. Hence, in this chapter, we summarize recent advances in the development of asymmetric reactions using a combination of first-row transition metals and CPAs. Furthermore, we provide a detailed discussion of the mechanisms involved in order to understand the interaction of the metal/phosphate and the origins of the asymmetric control of the transformations.

Abstract
A chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of 3-trifluoromethylthioquinolines was developed, providing chiral 2,3-disubstituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives containing a stereogenic trifluoromethylthio group with up to 99% enantioselectivity.

Abstract
An efficient method was developed to synthesize ferrocene-based bifunctional amine-thioureas bearing multiple hydrogen-bonding donors. Asymmetric Michael addition of acetylacetone to nitroolefins catalyzed by these novel bifunctional catalysts affords the Michael adducts in high yield and moderate to excellent enantioselectivities. Multiple hydrogen-bonds play an important role in accelerating the reaction.

Abstract
Phosphothreonine (pThr) was found to constitute a new class of chiral phosphoric acid (CPA) catalyst upon insertion into peptides. To demonstrate the potential of these phosphopeptides as asymmetric catalysts, enantioselective transfer hydrogenations of a previously underexplored substrate class for CPA-catalyzed reductions were carried out. pThr-containing peptides lead to the observation of enantioselectivities of up to 94:6 e.r. with 2-substituted quinolines containing C8-amino functionality. NMR studies indicate that hydrogen-bonding interactions promote strong complexation between substrates and a rigid β-turn catalyst.

Abstract
A chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of aromatic amines, quinolin-3-amines, was successfully developed with up to 99% ee. To supplement our previous work on the Ir-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 2-alkyl substituted quinolin-3-amines, a number of 2-aryl substituted substrates were reduced to provide a series of valuable chiral exocyclic amines with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities.
