Rhodium Nanoflowers Stabilized by a Nitrogen-Rich PEG-Tagged Substrate as Recyclable Catalyst for the Stereoselective Hydrosilylation of Internal Alkynes

Coinage Metal Complexes of a Sterically Encumbered Anionic Pyridylborate

Sterically loaded, anionic pyridine has been synthesized and utilized successfully in the stabilization of a isoleptic series of coinage metal complexes. The treatment of [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]K (Trip=2,4,6-iPr3C6H2) with CuBr(PPh3), AgCl(PPh3) or AuCl(PPh3) (Py=pyridine) afforded the corresponding [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]M(PPh3) (M=Au, Ag, Cu) complexes, via salt metathesis, as isolable, crystalline solids. Notably, these reactions avoid the facile single electron transfer chemistry reported with the less bulky ligand systems. The X-ray structures revealed that they are two-coordinate metal adducts. The M-N and M-P bond distances are longest in the silver and shortest in the copper adduct among the three group 11 family members. Computational analysis revealed an interesting stability dependence on steric bulk of the anionic pyridine (i. e., pyridyl borate) ligand. A comparison of structures and bonding of [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]Au(PPh3) to pyridine and m-terphenyl complexes, {[2,6-Trip2Py]Au(PPh3)}[SbF6] and [2,6-Trip2Ph]Au(PPh3) are also provided. The Au(I) isocyanide complex, [4-(Ph3B)-2,6-Trip2Py]Au(CNBut) has been stabilized using the same anionic pyridylborate illustrating that it can support other gold-ligand moieties as well.

Site-Isolated Rhodium(II) Metalloradicals Catalyze Olefin Hydrofunctionalization

Rh(II) porphyrin complexes display pronounced metal-centered radical character and the ability to activate small molecules under mild conditions, but catalysis with Rh(II) porphyrins is extremely rare. In addition to facile dimerization, Rh(II) porphyrins readily engage in kinetically and thermodynamically facile reactions involving two Rh(II) centers to generate stable Rh(III)-X intermediates that obstruct turnover in thermal catalysis. Here we report site isolation of Rh(II) metalloradicals in a MOF host, which not only protects Rh(II) metalloradicals against dimerization, but also allows them to participate in thermal catalysis. Access to PCN-224 or PCN-222 in which the porphyrin linkers are fully metalated by Rh(II) in the absence of any accompanying Rh(0) nanoparticles was achieved via the first direct MOF synthesis with a linker containing a transition-metal alkyl moiety, followed by Rh(III)-C bond photolysis.

Palladium-Catalyzed Cyclization/Alkenylation of Ynone Oximes with Vinylsilanes for the Assembly of Isoxazolyl Vinylsilanes

A palladium-catalyzed cascade cyclization/alkenylation for the assembly of synthetically valuable isoxazolyl vinylsilane derivative has been accomplished. Easily accessible ynone oximes, and available vinylsilane agents were used as the reaction starting materials This protocol features broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and good step- and atom-economy. Remarkably, this approach provides a new approach for the construction of structurally diverse isoxazolyl-containing vinylsilanes with high molecular complexity, showing a promising application in synthetic and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Catalytic Hydrofunctionalization Reactions of 1,3-Diynes

Metal-catalyzed hydrofunctionalization reactions of alkynes, i.e., the addition of Y–H units (Y = heteroatom or carbon) across the carbon–carbon triple bond, have attracted enormous attention for decades since they allow the straightforward and atom-economic access to a wide variety of functionalized olefins and, in its intramolecular version, to relevant heterocyclic and carbocyclic compounds. Despite conjugated 1,3-diynes being considered key building blocks in synthetic organic chemistry, this particular class of alkynes has been much less employed in hydrofunctionalization reactions when compared to terminal or internal monoynes. The presence of two C≡C bonds in conjugated 1,3-diynes adds to the classical regio- and stereocontrol issues associated with the alkyne hydrofunctionalization processes’ other problems, such as the possibility to undergo 1,2-, 3,4-, or 1,4-monoadditions as well as double addition reactions, thus increasing the number of potential products that can be formed. In this review article, metal-catalyzed hydrofunctionalization reactions of these challenging substrates are comprehensively discussed.

Hydroelementation of diynes

This review highlights the hydroelementation reactions of conjugated and separated diynes, which depending on the process conditions, catalytic system, as well as the type of reagents, leads to the formation of various products: enynes, dienes, allenes, polymers, or cyclic compounds. The presence of two triple bonds in the diyne structure makes these compounds important reagents but selective product formation is often difficult owing to problems associated with maintaining appropriate reaction regio- and stereoselectivity. Herein we review this topic to gain knowledge on the reactivity of diynes and to systematise the range of information relating to their use in hydroelementation reactions. The review is divided according to the addition of the E-H (E = Mg, B, Al, Si, Ge, Sn, N, P, O, S, Se, Te) bond to the triple bond(s) in the diyne, as well as to the type of the reagent used, and the product formed. Not only are the hydroelementation reactions comprehensively discussed, but the synthetic potential of the obtained products is also presented. The majority of published research is included within this review, illustrating the potential as well as limitations of these processes, with the intent to showcase the power of these transformations and the obtained products in synthesis and materials chemistry.

Synthesis of mono- and polyfunctional organosilicon derivatives of polyhedral carboranes for the preparation of hybrid polymer materials

A series of mono- and polyfunctional carborane organosilicon derivatives were prepared with good yields based on the hydrosilylation reactions of allylcarboranes with hydride-containing organosilicon compounds such as tetramethyldisiloxane, decamethylpentasiloxane and triethoxysilane in the presence of Karstedt's catalyst.

Rhodium Nanoparticles Stabilized by PEG-Tagged Imidazolium Salts as Recyclable Catalysts for the Hydrosilylation of Internal Alkynes and the Reduction of Nitroarenes

PEGylated imidazolium (bromide and tetrafluoroborate) and tris-imidazolium (bromide) salts containing triazole linkers have been used as stabilizers for the preparation of water-soluble rhodium(0) nanoparticles by reduction of rhodium trichloride with sodium borohydride in water at room temperature. The nanomaterials have been characterized (Transmission Electron Microscopy, Electron Diffraction, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy). They proved to be efficient and recyclable catalysts for the stereoselective hydrosilylation of internal alkynes, in the presence or absence of solvent, and in the reduction of nitroarenes to anilines with ammonia-borane as hydrogen donor in aqueous medium (1:4 tetrahydrofuran/water).

Gold nanoparticles stabilized by PEG-tagged imidazolium salts as recyclable catalysts for the synthesis of propargylamines and the cycloisomerization of γ-alkynoic acids

σ-H-H, σ-C-H, and σ-Si-H Bond Activation Catalyzed by Metal Nanoparticles

Activation of H-H, Si-H, and C-H bonds through σ-bond coordination has grown in the past 30 years from a scientific curiosity to an important tool in the functionalization of hydrocarbons. Several mechanisms were discovered via which the initially σ-bonded substrate could be converted: oxidative addition, heterolytic cleavage, σ-bond metathesis, electrophilic attack, etc. The use of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in this area is a more recent development, but obviously nanoparticles offer a much richer basis than classical homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for tuning reactivity for such a demanding process as C-H functionalization. Here, we will review the surface chemistry of nanoparticles and catalytic reactions occurring in the liquid phase, catalyzed by either colloidal or supported metal NPs. We consider nanoparticles prepared in solution, which are stabilized and tuned by polymers, ligands, and supports. The question we have addressed concerns the differences and similarities between molecular complexes and metal NPs in their reactivity toward σ-bond activation and functionalization.

Regio-selective and stereo-selective hydrosilylation of internal alkynes catalyzed by ruthenium complexes

In this study, ruthenium(ii)-catalyzed direct hydrosilylation of internal alkynes with high regio-selectivity and stereo-selectivity is reported. This title transformation led to various vinylsilanes in good to excellent yields. This approach features mild reaction conditions, low catalyst loading, air-stability, and good functional group tolerance. Furthermore, gram-scale preparation and some transformations of vinylsilanes were carried out, which further underscored its synthetic utility and applicability.

In this study, ruthenium(ii)-catalyzed direct hydrosilylation of internal alkynes with high regio-selectivity and stereo-selectivity is reported.

Hydrothermal Synthesis and Catalytic Application of Ultrathin Rhodium Nanosheet Nanoassemblies

Ultrathin noble metal nanosheets with atomic thickness exhibit abnormal electronic, surfacial, and photonic properties due to the unique two-dimensional (2D) confinement effect, which have attracted intensive research attention in catalysis/electrocatalysis. In this work, the well-defined ultrathin Rh nanosheet nanoassemblies with dendritic morphology are synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with assistance of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), where PAH effectively acts as the complexant and shape-directing agent. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images reveal the thickness of 2D Rh nanosheet with (111) planes is only ca. 0.8-1.1 nm. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurement displays the specific surface area of the as-prepared ultrathin Rh nanosheet nanoassemblies is 139.4 m² g^-1, which is much bigger than that of homemade Rh black (19.8 m² g^-1). Detailed catalytic investigations display the as-prepared ultrathin Rh nanosheet nanoassemblies have nearly 20.4-fold enhancement in mass-activity for the hydrolysis of ammonia borane as compared with homemade Rh black.

A versatile method for the preparation of carbon-rhodium hybrid catalysts on graphene and carbon black

A direct and rapid access to highly efficient and recyclable carbon–rhodium hybrid catalysts for the hydrosilylation reaction is presented.

Strategies for combining the selectivity and efficiency of homogeneous organometallic catalysts with the versatility of heterogeneous catalysts are urgently needed. Herein a direct and modular methodology is presented that provides rapid access to well-defined carbon–rhodium hybrid catalysts. A pre-synthesized Rh(i) complex containing a carbene-triazole ligand was found to be stable for direct immobilization onto unactivated graphene, carbon black and glassy carbon electrodes. Characterization of the heterogeneous systems using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy/mass spectrometry (ICP-OES/MS), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the well-defined nature of the hybrid catalysts. The hybrid catalysts show excellent activity, comparable to that of the homogeneous system for the hydrosilylation of diphenylacetylene, with turnover numbers ranging from 5000 to 48 000. These catalysts are the best reported to date for the hydrosilylation of diphenylacetylene. In common with conventional heterogeneous catalysts, high reusability, due to a lack of Rh metal leaching, was also observed for all carbon–rhodium complexes under investigation.
