Abstract
Asymmetric Michael additions are powerful tools to meet the growing need for stereochemically complex products. While 1,3-dicarbonyls are common nucleophiles, the successful use of configurationally unstable β-keto esters in diastereoselective variants remains understudied. In this Letter, crystalline β-keto esters were leveraged in a two-phase, one-pot merger of an asymmetric Michael addition with a crystallization-induced diastereomer transformation. Tuning the crystallinity of β-keto ester adducts enabled stereoconvergence of the products, which were isolated by filtration.

Abstract
A catalyst type is disclosed allowing for exceptional efficiency in direct 1,4-additions. The catalyst is a zwitterionic entity, in which acetate binds to CuII , which is formally negatively charged and serving as counterion for benzimidazolium. All 3 functionalities are involved in the catalytic activation. For maleimides productivity was increased by a factor >300 compared to literature (TONs up to 6700). High stereoselectivity and productivity was attained for a broad range of other Michael acceptors as well. The polyfunctional catalyst is accessible in only 4 steps from N-Ph-benzimidazole with an overall yield of 96 % and robust during catalysis. This allowed to reuse the same catalyst multiple times with nearly constant efficiency. Mechanistic studies, in particular by DFT, give a detailed picture how the catalyst operates. The benzimidazolium unit stabilizes the coordinated enolate nucleophile and prevents that acetate/acetic acid dissociate from the catalyst.

Abstract
Chiral Ni complexes have revolutionized both asymmetric acid-base and redox catalysis. However, the coordination isomerism of Ni complexes and their open-shell property still often hinder the elucidation of the origin of their observed stereoselectivity. Here, we report our experimental and computational investigations to clarify the mechanism of β-nitrostyrene facial selectivity switching in Ni(II)-diamine-(OAc)2-catalyzed asymmetric Michael reactions. In the reaction with a dimethyl malonate, the Evans transition state (TS), in which the enolate binds in the same plane with the diamine ligand, is identified as the lowest-energy TS to promote C-C bond formation from the Si face in β-nitrostyrene. In contrast, a detailed survey of the multiple potential pathways in the reaction with α-keto esters points to a clear preference for our proposed C-C bond-forming TS, in which the enolate coordinates to the Ni(II) center in apical-equatorial positions relative to the diamine ligand, thereby promoting Re face addition in β-nitrostyrene. The N-H group plays a key orientational role in minimizing steric repulsion.

Abstract
A photoredox/cobalt dual catalytic procedure has been developed that allows benzoylation of olefins. Here the photoredox catalyst effects the decarboxylation of α-ketoacids to form benzoyl radicals. After addition of this radical to styrenes, the cobalt catalyst abstracts a H-atom. Hydrogen evolution from the putative cobalt hydride intermediate allows a Heck-like aroylation without the need for a stoichiometric oxidant. Mechanistic studies reveal that electronically different styrenes lead to a curved Hammett plot, thus suggesting a change in product-determining step in the catalytic mechanism.

Abstract
Nowadays, design of the new chiral ligands for organometallic catalysts is often based on the step-by-step increase in their complexity to improve efficiency. Herein we describe that simple in situ addition of the fluoride source to the asymmetric organometallic catalyst can improve not only activity but also enantioselectivity. Bromide-nickel diimine complexes were found to catalyze asymmetric Michael addition in low yields and ee, but activation with fluoride leads to a significant improvement in catalyst performance. The developed approach was applied to prepare several enantioenriched GABA analogues.

Abstract
Compounds rich in sp3-hybridized carbons are desirable in drug discovery. Nickel-catalyzed hydrocarbonation of alkenes is a potentially efficient method to synthesize these compounds. By using abundant, readily available, and stable alkenes as pro-nucleophiles, these reactions can have broad scope and high functional group tolerance. However, this methodology is still in an early stage of development, as the first efficient examples were reported only in 2016. Herein, we summarize the progress of this emerging field, with an emphasis on enantioselective reactions. We highlight major developments, critically discuss a wide range of possible mechanisms, and offer our perspective of the state and challenges of the field. We hope this Perspective will stimulate future works in this area, making the methodology widely applicable in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The use of arylboron reagents in metal‐catalyzed domino addition–cyclization reactions is a well‐established strategy for the preparation of diverse, highly functionalized carbo‐ and heterocyclic products. Although rhodium‐ and palladium‐based catalysts have been commonly used for these reactions, more recent work has demonstrated nickel catalysis is also highly effective, in many cases offering unique reactivity and access to products that might otherwise not be readily available. This review gives an overview of nickel‐catalyzed arylative cyclizations of alkyne‐ and allene‐tethered electrophiles using arylboron reagents. The scope of the reactions is discussed in detail, and general mechanistic concepts underpinning the processes are described.

Abstract
Reaction design in asymmetric catalysis has traditionally been predicated on a structurally robust scaffold in both substrates and catalysts, to reduce the number of possible diastereomeric transition states. Herein, we present the stereochemical dynamics in the Ni(II)-catalyzed diastereoconvergent (3 + 2) cycloadditions of isomerizable nitrile-conjugated nitrones with α-keto ester enolates. Even in the presence of multiple equilibrating species, the catalytic protocol displays a wide substrate scope to access a range of CN-containing building blocks bearing adjacent stereocenters with high enantio- and diastereoselectivities. Our computational investigations suggest that the enantioselectivity is governed in the deprotonation process to form (Z)-Ni-enolates, while the unique syn addition is mainly controlled by weak noncovalent bonding interactions between the nitrone and ligand.

Abstract
A new synthetic strategy toward nonracemic phosphoryl-substituted pyrrolidines and tetrahydropyranes with three and five contiguous stereocenters is presented. Readily available β-keto phosphonates react with conjugated nitroolefins in the presence of a chiral Ni(II) complex to give nitro keto phosphonates with two stereocenters with excellent enantioselectivity and moderate to high diastereoselectivity. These products were used for a reductive cyclization leading to pyrrolidin-3-ylphosphonic acid and for reactions with aldehydes yielding tetrahydropyranylphosphonates as individual stereoisomers. These nonracemic heterocycles containing phosphoryl moieties are useful for designing new pharmacologically active compounds.

Abstract
Efficient oxidative direct cyanations of 3-alkyl/aryl 2-oxindoles using Cyano-1,2-BenziodoXol-3(1H)-one (CBX) (2a) have been reported under 'transition metal-free' conditions to synthesize a wide variety of 3-cyano 3-alkyl/aryl 2-oxindoles sharing an all-carbon quaternary center under additive-free conditions. The application of this process is shown by the formal total synthesis of (±)-gliocladin C (11c) in a few steps.

Abstract
An atom-economical and practical method for the efficient synthesis of various pyrazino[1,2-a]indole-2-oxides was developed through a nickel(II)-catalyzed [5 + 1] annulation of 2-carbonyl-1-propargylindoles with hydroxylamine in water without using an organic solvent. The reaction involved an initial condensation of 2-carbonyl-1-propargylindoles with hydroxylamine to afford oxime intermediates, which then underwent a nickel(II)-catalyzed 6-exo-dig cyclization. Preliminary studies showed that (n-Bu)4NI served as a phase transfer catalyst and promoted the formation of active nickel(II) species. More importantly, the nickel(II) salt and phase transfer catalyst-in-water could be recycled seven times, and a gram scalable product was easily obtained in good yields through a filtration and washing protocol.

Abstract
Late-stage synthesis of α,β-unsaturated aryl ketones remains an unmet challenge in organic synthesis. Reported herein is a photocatalytic non-chain-radical aroyl chlorination of alkenes by a 1,3-chlorine atom shift to form β-chloroketones as masked enones that liberate the desired enones upon workup. This strategy suppresses side reactions of the enone products. The reaction tolerates a wide array of functional groups and complex molecules including derivatives of peptides, sugars, natural products, nucleosides, and marketed drugs. Notably, addition of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-pyridine enhances the quantum yield and efficiency of the cross-coupling reaction. Experimental and computational studies suggest a mechanism involving PCET, formation and reaction of an α-chloro-α-hydroxy benzyl radical, and 1,3-chlorine atom shift.

Abstract
Chiral metal catalysts have been widely applied to asymmetric transformations. However, the electronic structure of the catalyst and how it contributes to the activation of the substrate is seldom investigated. Here, we report an empirical approach for providing insights into the catalytic activation process in the distorted Ni(II)-catalysed asymmetric [3+2] cycloaddition of α-ketoesters. We quantitatively characterize the bonding nature of the catalyst by means of electron density distribution analysis, showing that the distortion around the Ni(II) centre makes the dz2 orbital partially ‘naked', wherein the labile acetate ligand is coordinated with electrostatic interaction. The electron-deficient dz2 orbital and the acetate act together to deprotonate the α-ketoester, generating the (Λ)-Ni(II)–enolate. The solid and solution state analyses, together with theoretical calculations, strongly link the electronic structure of the centrochiral octahedral Ni(II) complex and its catalytic activity, depicting a cooperative mechanism of enolate binding and outer sphere hydrogen-bonding activation. Understanding the interplay between electronic structure and performance and how it relates to mechanism is important for catalysis. Here the authors report an asymmetric [3+2] cycloaddition and show the Ni(II) catalyst possesses a weakly bound acetate ligand, leaving the dz2 orbital partially vacant.

Abstract
In the field of asymmetric synthesis, the development of new chiral ligands has been regarded as an attractive challenge for decades. Novel chiral ligands can often have a great impact on synthetic protocols. In this context, we are currently interested in the application of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) as an entirely new class of chiral ligand. To handle this issue, we designed a chiral phen ligand that provides the N,N,O-tridentate coordination of the phen moiety and an additional phenolic hydroxyl group. As phen possesses greater coordination ability with various ions, our chiral phen ligand would be valuable as one of the "privileged" chiral ligands applied to a broad range of metal catalysts and new reactions. This account summarizes the results of the application of the chiral phen ligand to various kinds of metal catalysis.
