N-Sulfenylsuccinimide/phthalimide: an alternative sulfenylating reagent in organic transformations

In the field of organosulfur chemistry, sulfenylating agents are an important key in C-S bond formation strategies. Among various organosulfur precursors, N-sulfenylsuccinimide/phthalimide derivatives have shown highly electrophilic reactivity for the asymmetric synthesis of many organic compounds. Hence, in this review article, we focus on the application of these alternative sulfenylating reagents in organic transformations.

Lewis Acid-Mediated Electrophilic Thiolative Difunctionalization of Enimides: Rapid Access to β-Amino Sulfides

An efficient and practical route for the synthesis of β-amino sulfides by Lewis acid-mediated electrophilic thiolative difunctionalization of enimides is disclosed. A series of free phenols, electron-rich arene, alcohol, azide, and hydride, are successfully incorporated into the substrates in high regio- and stereoselectivities under mild conditions. The obtained products possess multiple functional groups and can be easily transformed to other valuable molecules.

N2-Selective β-Thioalkylation of Benzotriazoles with Alkenes

Herein, N²-selective β-thioalkylation of benzotriazoles with unactivated alkenes and styrenes is reported. The N²-selective β-thioalkylation of benzotriazoles is highly stereospecific and works under simple and mild conditions, exhibiting excellent functional group tolerance. The high N²-selectivity is a consequence of the combination of hydrogen bonding and Lewis acid/base activation, which reverses the N²-position to be favored for alkylation.

Recent advances in thiolation via sulfur electrophiles

This review systematically summarizes the recent developments for constructing sulfur compounds from sulfur electrophiles, and the mechanism mainly involved thirranium ions, sulfur ylides, C–S cross coupling and electrophilic substitution.

Divergent functionalization of α,β-enones: catalyst-free access to β-azido ketones and β-amino α-diazo ketones

A simple and practical method for the azidation of β-fluoroalkyl α,β-unsaturated ketones to access a wide variety of fluorinated nitrogenous carbonyl compounds is developed. Different from existing precedents, neither a metallic nor an organic catalyst was involved in our strategy. Judicious choice of solvents allows for the modulation of the reaction outcomes, delivering β-azido ketones or β-amino α-diazo ketones. The reaction system features environmental friendliness, mild conditions, simplicity and excellent functional group tolerance.

BF3·OEt2-mediated cyclization of β,γ-unsaturated oximes and hydrazones with N-(arylthio/arylseleno)succinimides: an efficient approach to synthesize isoxazoles or dihydropyrazoles

A highly efficient BF3·OEt2-mediated cyclization of β,γ-unsaturated oximes and tosylhydrazones with N-(arylthio/arylseleno)succinimides has been established for the construction of N-heterocycles in a one-step manner. This metal-free cyclization provides direct access to isoxazoles and dihydropyrazoles in good to excellent yields at room temperature. The mechanistic experiments support the formation of a cationic species PhS+ which plays a critical role in this cyclization process.

A facile and regioselective multicomponent synthesis of chiral aryl-1,2-mercaptoamines in water followed by monoamine oxidase (MAO-N) enzymatic resolution

A facile microwave assisted three-component protocol allows the synthesis of chiral aryl-1,2-mercaptoamines in water in a few minutes with high yields, bypassing the use of toxic aziridine intermediates. The chiral 1,2-mercaptoamines were then deracemized through enzymatic resolution of the racemates using monoamine oxidase (MAO-N) biocatalysts.

A novel metal-free amidosulfenylation of alkenes leading to β-azolyl sulfides

A novel and environmentally benign method for C-S and C-N bond formation by the direct amidosulfenylation of alkenes has been developed under metal-free conditions. Various alkenes and azoles were transformed into the corresponding β-azolyl sulfides in ionic liquids. The wide substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and ease of operation make this reaction attractive for the synthesis of nitrogen- and sulfur-containing molecules.

Iron-Catalyzed Asymmetric Haloazidation of α,β-Unsaturated Ketones: Construction of Organic Azides with Two Vicinal Stereocenters

Organic azides play important roles in synthetic chemistry, chemical biology, drug discovery, and material science. Azido-functionalization of alkenes is one of the most efficient procedures for rapid introduction of azide group into organic compounds. But only a few examples have been documented in the catalytic asymmetric version of the azidation of alkenes. Herein, we report an unprecedented highly diastereo- and enantioselective bromoazidation of α,β-unsaturated ketones catalyzed by chiral N,N'-dioxide/Fe(OTf)₂ complexes. An array of aryl, heteroaryl, and alkyl substituted α,β-unsaturated ketones were transformed to the corresponding α-bromo-β-azido ketones in high yields with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. The catalytic system was also applicable for chloroazidation and iodoazidation of chalcone. Kinetic studies and some control experiments suggested that the reaction might proceed via a 1,4-addition/halogenation pathway.

A three-component oxidative decarbonylative alkylation–azidation cascade reaction of styrene derivatives with aliphatic aldehydes and TMSN₃ to provide aliphatic azides is developed.
