Abstract
The use of supported rhodium nanoparticles (RhNPs) is gaining attention due to the drive for better catalyst performance and sustainability. Silica-based supports are promising for RhNP immobilization because of their thermal and chemical stability. Functionalizing silica allows for the design of catalysts with improved activity for biomass transformations. In this study, we synthesized rhodium nanoparticles (RhNPs) supported on N-functionalized silica-based materials, utilizing SBA-15 as the support and functionalizing it with either nicotinamide or an imidazolium-based ionic liquid. Solid-state 29Si and 13C NMR experiments confirmed successful ligand anchoring onto the silica surface. RhNPs@SBA-15-Imz[NTf2] and RhNPs@SBA-15-NIC were efficiently prepared and extensively characterized, revealing small, spherical, and well-dispersed fcc Rh nanoparticles on the support surface, confirmed by XPS analyses detecting metallic rhodium, Rh(I), and Rh(III) species. The catalytic performance of these materials is assessed in the hydrogenation of biomass-derived substrates, including furfural, levulinic acid, terpenes, vanillin, and eugenol, among others, underscoring their potential in sustainable chemical transformations. The nanocatalysts demonstrated excellent recyclability and resistance to metal leaching over multiple cycles. The study shows that neutral and ionic silica grafting fragments differently stabilize RhNPs, affecting their morphology, size, and interaction with silanol groups, which impacts their catalytic activity.

Abstract
0.54% Rh/Co(OH)2 exhibited 100% selectivity for –NO2 hydrogenation at >96% conversion for nitroarene hydrogenation. Its excellent catalytic performance is due to the interfacial effect of Rh–Co(OH)2 and Rh in the form of single atoms and nanoclusters.

Abstract
The reduction of nitroarenes is the most efficient route for the preparation of aromatic primary amines. These reductions are generally performed in the presence of heterogeneous transition metal catalysts, which are rather efficient but long and tedious to prepare. In addition, they contain very expensive metals that are in most cases difficult to reuse. Therefore, the development of efficient, easily accessible and reusable Pd catalysts obtained rapidly from safe and non-toxic starting materials was implemented in this report. Two bottom-up synthesis methods were used, the first consisted in the impregnation of a micro/mesoporous carbon support with a Pd salt solution, followed by thermal reduction (at 300, 450 or 600 °C) while the second involved a direct synthesis based on the co-assembly and pyrolysis (600 °C) of a mixture of a phenolic precursor, glyoxal, a surfactant and a Pd salt. The obtained composites possess Pd nanoparticles (NPs) of tunable sizes (ranging from 1–2 to 7.0 nm) and homogeneously distributed in the carbon framework (pores/walls). It turned out that they were successfully used for mild and environment-friendly hydrogenations of nitroarenes at room temperature under H2 (1 atm) in EtOH in the presence of only 5 mequiv. of supported Pd. The determinations of the optimal characteristics of the catalysts constituted a second objective of this study. It was found that the activity of the catalysts was strongly dependent on the Pd NPs sizes, i.e., catalysts bearing small Pd NPs (1.2 nm obtained at 300 °C and 3.4 nm obtained at 450 °C) exhibited an excellent activity, while those containing larger Pd NPs (6.4 nm and 7.0 nm obtained at 600 °C, either by indirect or direct methods) were not active. Moreover, the possibility to reuse the catalysts was shown to be dependent on the surface chemistry of the Pd NPs: the smallest Pd NPs are prone to oxidation by air and their surface was gradually covered by a PdO shell decreasing their activity during reuse. A good compromise between intrinsic catalytic activity (i.e. during first use) and possibility of reuse was found in the catalyst made by impregnation followed by reduction at 450 °C since the hydrogenation could be performed in only 2 h in EtOH or even in water. The catalyst was quantitatively recovered after reaction by filtration, used at least 7 times with no loss of efficiency. Advantageously, almost Pd-free primary aromatic amines were obtained since the Pd leaching was very low (<0.1% of the introduced amount). Compared to numerous reports from the literature, the catalysts described here were both easily accessible from eco-friendly precursors and very active for hydrogenations under mild and “green” reaction conditions. Size induced activity and reusability of mesoporous carbons containing Pd NPs are demonstrated herein for mild and green hydrogenations of nitroarenes.![]()

Facile Green Preparation of Rhodium Nanoclusters Supported Nano-Scaled Graphene Platelets for Sonogashira Coupling Reaction and Reduction of p-Nitrophenol. Catalysts 2019. Abstract
Rhodium nanoclusters were uniformly dispersed on nano-scaled graphene platelets by a simple ‘mix and heat’ method without using any toxic reagents. Distilled water was used to obtain the homogenous dispersion of Rh-nanoclusters on graphene platelets. The morphology of the resultant catalyst (Rh(0)NCs/GNPs) was studied by means of transmission electron microscope (TEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) analyses. The X-ray photoemission spectroscope (XPS) result confirmed the metallic form of Rh-nanoclusters in Rh(0)NCs/GNPs. The crystalline property and the interaction between Rh-nanoclusters and graphene platelets (GNPs) were studied by means of XRD and Raman analysis. The Rh-loading in Rh(0)NCs/GNPs was confirmed by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscope (SEM-EDS) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscope (ICP-MS) analysis. After being optimized, the Rh(0)NCs/GNPs used as catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol with NaBH4 and the Sonogashira coupling reaction between iodobenzene with phenylacetylene. To our delight, the Rh(0)NCs/GNPs showed excellent catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol with an excellent turnover frequency (TOF) value of 112.5 min−1. The kapp and k’ values were calculated to be 62.07 × 10−3 min−1(0.002 mg of Rh(0)NCs/GNPs) and 31035 × 10−3 mg−1 min−1,respectively. Alike, under the optimal conditions, the Rh(0)NCs/GNPs gave the desired product, diphenylacetylene, in a good yield of 87% with 91% selectivity. The Rh(0)NCs/GNPs can be reused without significant loss in its catalytic activity.
