Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are an emerging materials' class with applications in areas such as energy storage, catalysis, and biomass dissolution and processing. Their physicochemical properties including surface tension, viscosity, density and their interplay between cation and anion chemistry are decisive in these applications. For many commercially available ILs, a full set of physicochemical data is not available. Here, we extend the knowledge base by providing physicochemical properties such as density (20 and 25 °C), refractive index (20 and 25 °C), surface tension (23 °C, including polar and dispersive components), and shear viscosity (ambient atmosphere, shear rate 1-200 s-1), for 20 commercial ILs. A correlation between the crystal volume, dispersive surface tension, and shear viscosity is introduced as a predictive tool, allowing for viscosity estimation. Systematic exploration of cation/anion alkyl side chain lengths reveals the impact on the IL's physicochemical attributes. Increasing the anion's headgroup decreases surface tension up to 35.7% and consequently shear viscosity. We further demonstrate that the dispersive part of the surface tension linearly correlates with the refractive index of the ionic liquid. While we provide additional physicochemical data, the screening and modeling efforts will contribute to better structure property predictions enabling faster progress in design and applications of ILs.

Abstract
The deuteration of organic molecules is considerably important in organic and medicinal chemistry. An electrochemical membrane reactor using proton-conducting graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets was developed to synthesize valuable deuterium-labeled products via an efficient hydrogen-to-deuterium (H/D) exchange under mild conditions at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Deuterons (D+) formed by the anodic oxidation of heavy water (D2O) at the Pt/C anode permeate through the GO membrane to the Pt/C cathode, where organic molecules with functional groups (C≡C and C═O) are deuterated with adsorbed atomic D species. Deuteration occurs in outstanding yields with high levels of D incorporation. We also achieved the electrodeuteration of a drug molecule, ibuprofen, demonstrating the promising feasibility of the GO membrane reactor in the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract
All aromatic C-H bonds of triphenylphosphine (PPh3) were efficiently replaced by C-D bonds using Ru/C and Ir/C co-catalysts in 2-PrOH and D2O, an inexpensive deuterium source. Furthermore, non-radioactive and safe deuterium-incorporated Mito-Q (drug candidate) was prepared from deuterated PPh3 and used for the live-cell Raman imaging to evaluate the mitochondrial uptake.

Abstract
An amine and bis(phenylsulfonyl)methane co-catalyzed hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDE) method via a Michael-retro-Michael pathway for site-selective introduction of deuterium at the α-position of enals using D2O as a deuterium source has been achieved. The mild, operationally simple protocol allows for high yielding and high level deuterium incorporation (up to 99%) for structurally diverse aromatic-derived enals and dienals.

Abstract
The development of chemoselective C(sp3)-H deuteration is of particular interest in synthetic chemistry. We herein report the α-selective, iridium(iii)-bipyridonate-catalyzed hydrogen(H)/deuterium(D) isotope exchange of alcohols using deuterium oxide (D2O) as the primary deuterium source. This method enables the direct, chemoselective deuteration of primary and secondary alcohols under basic or neutral conditions without being affected by coordinative functional groups such as imidazole and tetrazole. Successful substrates for deuterium labelling include the pharmaceuticals losartan potassium, rapidosept, guaifenesin, and diprophylline. The deuterated losartan potassium shows higher stability towards the metabolism by CYP2C9 than the protiated analogue. Kinetic and DFT studies indicate that the direct deuteration proceeds through dehydrogenation of alcohol to the carbonyl intermediate, conversion of [IrIII-H] to [IrIII-D] with D2O, and deuteration of the carbonyl intermediate to give the α-deuterated product.

Abstract
Organic compounds labeled with hydrogen isotopes play a crucial role in numerous areas, from materials science to medicinal chemistry. Indeed, while the replacement of hydrogen by deuterium gives rise to improved absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties in drugs and enables the preparation of internal standards for analytical mass spectrometry, the use of tritium-labeled compounds is a key technique all along drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry. For these reasons, the interest in new methodologies for the isotopic enrichment of organic molecules and the extent of their applications are equally rising. In this regard, this Review intends to comprehensively discuss the new developments in this area over the last years (2017-2021). Notably, besides the fundamental hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) reactions and the use of isotopically labeled analogues of common organic reagents, a plethora of reductive and dehalogenative deuteration techniques and other transformations with isotope incorporation are emerging and are now part of the labeling toolkit.

Abstract
Deuterium oxide (D2O) is a special variety of water that serves as a crucial resource in a range of applications, but it is a costly and unusual resource. We therefore developed a new D2O concentration system that combines a polymer electrolyte water electrolyzer and a catalytic combustor for recycling used D2O. In this study, 1.6 L of used D2O, with a concentration of 93.1%, was electrolyzed for 13.6 h to obtain 0.62 L of D2O, with a concentration of 99.3%. In addition, the recombined water obtained by burning electrolytic gas using the catalytic combustor was also electrolyzed for 8.8 h to obtain 0.22 L of D2O, with a concentration of 99.0%. The estimated separation factor of this electrolyzer at 25 °C was 3.6, which is very close to the equilibrium constant of the water/hydrogen isotope exchange reaction. Recycled D2O was used as a deuterium source for the deuteration reaction of sodium octanoate, and 93.6% deuterated sodium octanoate was obtained. It is concluded that there were no impurities in the recycled D2O that interfered with the deuteration reaction. These results can lead to the development of a cost-effective deuteration method for these materials. Heavy water recycling for the production of deuterium compounds.![]()

Abstract
The development of new drugs is accelerated by rapid access to functionalized and D-labeled molecules with improved activity and pharmacokinetic profiles. Diverse synthetic procedures often involve the usage of gaseous reagents, which can be a difficult task due to the requirement of a dedicated laboratory setup. Here, we developed a special reactor for the on-demand production of gases actively utilized in organic synthesis (C2H2, H2, C2D2, D2, and CO2) that completely eliminates the need for high-pressure equipment and allows for integrating gas generation into advanced laboratory practice. The reactor was developed by computer-aided design and manufactured using a conventional 3D printer with polypropylene and nylon filled with carbon fibers as materials. The implementation of the reactor was demonstrated in representative reactions with acetylene, such as atom-economic nucleophilic addition (conversions of 19-99%) and nickel-catalyzed S-functionalization (yields 74-99%). One of the most important advantages of the reactor is the ability to generate deuterated acetylene (C2D2) and deuterium gas (D2), which was used for highly significant, atom-economic and cost-efficient deuterium labeling of S,O-vinyl derivatives (yield 68-94%). Successful examples of their use in organic synthesis are provided to synthesize building blocks of heteroatom-functionalized and D-labeled biologically active organic molecules.

Abstract
Hinokitiol has a broad antibacterial activity against bacteria and fungi. While its biosynthetic pathway has been intensively studied, its dynamics in natural environments, such as biodegradation pathway, remain unclear. In this study, the authors report a direct deuterium labeling of hinokitiol as a traceable molecular probe to serve those studies. Hinokitiol was subjected to the H2-Pd/C-D2O conditions and deuterated hinokitiol was obtained with excellent deuteration efficiencies and in moderate yield. The 1H and 2H NMR spectra indicated that all ring- and aliphatic hydrogens except that on C-6 were substituted by deuterium. According to the substrate scope and computational chemistry, deuteration on tropolone ring was suggested to proceed via D+-mediated process, and which was supported by the results of the experiment with trifluoroacetic acid and Pd(TPP)4. On the other hand, the deuteration on aliphatic group was predicted to be catalyzed by Pd(II) species.

Abstract
A hydrogen bond donor solvent assisted (radio)halogenation and deuteration of organoborons has been developed. The reactions exhibited high functional group tolerance and needed only an ambient atmosphere. Most importantly, compared to literature methods, our conditions are more consistent with the principals of green chemistry (e.g., metal-free, strong oxidant-free, more straightforward conditions).
