Co(III)-Catalyzed [4+1] Annulation of Amides with Allenes via C−H Activation

Rh(III)-Catalyzed [4 + 1] Annulation of Benzamides with Vinyl Cyclic Carbonates for the Synthesis of Isoindolinones

A Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H bond activation and subsequent [4+1] annulation of benzamides with vinyl cyclic carbonates have been developed for the synthesis of isoindolinones, in which the electron-rich alkenes could serve as one-carbon units. This reaction proceeds smoothly with high regioselectivity under oxidant- and silver-free conditions and exhibits broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance including some biological active materials. The scale-up reaction and derivatizations of the product further demonstrate the potential synthetic utility of this transformation.

Synthesis of 1,1-Disubstituted Allenylic Silyl Ethers Through Iron-Catalyzed Regioselective C(sp2)─H Functionalization of Allenes

We report a synthesis of allenylic silyl ethers through iron-catalyzed functionalization of the C(sp2)─H bonds of monosubstituted alkylallenes. In the presence of a cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl based catalyst and triisopropylsilyl triflate as a silylation agent, a variety of aryl aldehydes were suitable coupling partners in this transformation, furnishing a collection of 1,1-disubstituted allenylic triisopropylsilyl ethers as products in moderate to excellent yields as a single regioisomer. Lithium bistriflimide was identified as a critical additive in this transformation. The optimized protocol was scalable, and the products were amenable to further transformation to give a number of unsaturated, polyfunctional derivatives.

Electrochemical 5-exo-dig aza-cyclization of 2-alkynylbenzamides toward 3-hydroxyisoindolinone derivatives

Preparation of biologically relevant 3-hydroxyisoindolinones from readily available 2-alkynylbenzamides is an appealing synthetic approach. However, such kinds of compounds preferably undergo O-attacked 5-exo-dig/6-endo-dig cyclizations. Herein, we report an electrochemically generated amidyl radical proceeding via a highly selective N-attacked 5-exo-dig radical cyclization to form 3-hydroxyisoindolinone derivatives. This reaction features simple operation, good selectivity, and broad substrate scope. Moreover, gram-scale preparation and synthetic elaborations imply the potential applicability of this protocol for the synthesis of diverse isoindolinone derivatives.

Looking deep into C-H functionalization: the synthesis and application of cyclopentadienyl and related metal catalysts

Metal catalyzed C-H functionalization offers a versatile platform for methodology development and a wide variety of reactions now exist for the chemo- and site-selective functionalization of organic molecules. Cyclopentadienyl-metal (CpM) complexes of transition metals and their correlative analogues have found widespread application in this area, and herein we highlight several key applications of commonly used transition-metal Cp-type catalysts. In addition, an understanding of transition metal Cp-type catalyst synthesis is important, particularly where modifications to the catalyst structure are required for different applications, and a summary of this aspect is given.

Iron-Catalyzed Contrasteric Functionalization of Allenic C(sp2)-H Bonds: Synthesis of α-Aminoalkyl 1,1-Disubstituted Allenes

An iron-catalyzed C-H functionalization of simple monosubstituted allenes is reported. An efficient protocol for this process was made possible by the use of a newly developed electron-rich and sterically hindered cationic cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl complex as the catalyst and N-sulfonyl hemiaminal ether reagents as precursors to iminium ion electrophiles. Under optimized conditions, the use of a mild, functional-group-tolerant base enabled the conversion of a range of monoalkyl allenes to their allenylic sulfonamido 1,1-disubstituted derivatives, a previously unreported and contrasteric regiochemical outcome for the C-H functionalization of electronically unbiased and directing-group-free allenes.

Direct synthesis of indazole derivatives via Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation of phthalazinones and allenes

A novel Rh(III)-catalyzed annulation of phthalazinones or pyridazinones with various allenes was developed, leading to the formation of indazole derivatives bearing a quaternary carbon in moderate to good yields. The targeted products were synthesized via sequential C-H activation and olefin insertion, followed by β-hydride elimination and intramolecular cyclization. The synthetic protocol proceeded efficiently with broad functional group tolerance, high atom efficiency and high Z-selectivity. The practicability of this method was proved by synthetic transformation.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed and synergistic dual directing group-enabled redox-neutral [3+3] annulation of N-phenoxyacetamides with α-allenols

By virtue of α-allenols as innovative three-carbon annulation components, the Rh(III)-catalyzed redox-neutral C-H coupling of N-phenoxyacetamides with α-allenols has been realized for the assembly of 4-alkylidene chroman-2-ol frameworks via an unusual [3+3] annulation. This transformation features good functional group tolerance, specific regio-/chemoselectivity and potential synthetic utility. Mechanistic studies reveal that synergistic coordination modes between the dual directing groups (-ONHAc and -OH) and the rhodium metal center account for the observed exclusive selectivity.

Cobalt-Catalyzed C-H Activation and [3 + 2] Annulation with Allenes: Diastereoselective Synthesis of Indane Derivatives

An unprecedented bidentate directing-group-assisted cobalt-catalyzed oxidative C-H activation of aryl hydrazones followed by a syn-diastereoselective [3 + 2] annulation reaction has been achieved, employing allenes as the annulation partners. The selective 2,3-migratory insertion of allenes with arylcobalt(III) species and the subsequent intramolecular diastereoselective nucleophilic addition of η1-allylcobalt onto the imine resulted in [3 + 2] annulation over the alternative [4 + 2] annulation. Furthermore, the oxidative annulation obviates the need for stoichiometric metal oxidants and proceeds under aerobic conditions.

Allenes: Versatile Building Blocks in Cobalt-Catalyzed C–H Activation

The unique reactivity of allenes has led to their emergence as valuable coupling partners in transition-metal-mediated C–H activation reactions. On the other hand, due to its high abundance and high Lewis acidity, cobalt is garnering widespread interest as a useful catalyst for C–H activation. Here, we summarize cobalt-catalyzed C–H activations involving allenes as coupling partners and then describe our studies on Co(III)-catalyzed C-8 dienylation of quinoline N-oxides with allenes bearing a leaving group at the α-position for realizing a dienylation protocol.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Oxidative C-H Activation: Strategies and Concepts

Inexpensive cobalt-catalyzed oxidative C-H functionalization has emerged as a powerful tool for the construction of C-C and C-Het bonds, which offers unique potential for transformative applications to modern organic synthesis. In the early stage, these transformations typically required stoichiometric and toxic transition metals as sacrificial oxidants; thus, the formation of metal-containing waste was inevitable. In contrast, naturally abundant molecular O₂ has more recently been successfully employed as a green oxidant in cobalt catalysis, thus considerably improving the sustainability of such transformations. Recently, a significant momentum was gained by the use of electricity as a sustainable and environmentally benign redox reagent in cobalt-catalyzed C-H functionalization, thereby preventing the consumption of cost-intensive chemicals while at the same time addressing the considerable safety hazards related to the use of molecular oxygen in combination with flammable organic solvents. Considering the unparalleled potential of the aforementioned approaches for sustainable green synthesis, this Review summarizes the recent progress in cobalt-catalyzed oxidative C-H activation until early 2020.

Cobaltaelectro-catalyzed oxidative allene annulation by electro-removable hydrazides

An efficient C-H/N-H functionalization with allenes was enabled via versatile electro-oxidative cobalt catalysis. Thus, electrochemical C-H activations were accomplished with high levels of chemoselectivity and regioselectivity in an operationally simple undivided cell setup. The user-friendly nature of this protocol was highlighted by excellent functional group tolerance, an electro-reductive removable hydrazide directing group and easy scalability. Experimental mechanistic studies were indicative of a facile BIES C-H cobaltation event.

Access to 5H-benzo[a]carbazol-6-ols and benzo[6,7]cyclohepta[1,2-b]indol-6-ols via rhodium-catalyzed C–H activation/carbenoid insertion/aldol-type cyclization

The rhodium-catalyzed mono-ortho C–H activation/carbenoid insertion/aldol-type cyclization of 3-aldehyde-2-phenyl-1H-indoles with diazo compounds has been developed.

Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed Directed C-H Dienylation of Anilides with Allenes Leads to Highly Conjugated Systems

Allenes are unique coupling partners in transition-metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization leading to a variety of products via alkenylation, allenylation, allylation, and annulation reactions. The outcome is governed by both the reactivity of the allene and the formation and stability of the organometallic intermediate. An efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed, weakly coordinating group-directed dienylation of electronically unbiased allenes is developed using an N-acyl amino acid as a ligand. Further elaboration of the dienylated products to construct polycyclic compounds is also described.

Recent advances in cobalt-catalysed C–H functionalizations

Ready availability, low cost and low toxicity of cobalt salts have redirected the attention of researchers away from noble metals, such as Pd, Rh, and Ir, towards Co in the field of C–H functionalisation.
