Controlling the regioselectivity of the bromolactonization reaction in HFIP

The halolactonization reaction provides rapid access to densely functionalized lactones from unsaturated carboxylic acids. The endo/exo regioselectivity of this cyclization reaction is primarily determined by the electronic stabilization of alkene substituents, thus making it inherently dependent on substrate structures. Therefore this method often affords one type of halolactone regioisomer only. Herein, we introduce a simple and efficient method for regioselectivity-switchable bromolactonization reactions mediated by HFIP solvent. Two sets of reaction conditions were developed, each forming endo-products or exo-products in excellent regioselectivity. A combination of computational and experimental mechanistic studies not only confirmed the crucial role of HFIP, but also revealed the formation of endo-products under kinetic control and exo-products under thermodynamic control. This study paves the way for future work on the use of perfluorinated solvents to dictate reaction outcomes in organic synthesis.

Electronic and Steric Effects on the Reactivity of Seleniranium Ions with Alkenes in the Gas Phase

Gas phase ion-molecule reactions between seleniranium ions, R-c-SeCH2CH2+, and cis-cyclooctene were used to probe electronic and steric effects of substituents on kinetics and branching ratios. The second-order rate coefficients increased in the order p-OMeC6H4 < C6H5 < p-BrC6H4 < p-CF3C6H4 < m-NO2C6H4, giving a Hammett plot with R2 = 0.98 and ρ = +1.66. The two main pathways include direct transfer of the selenium moiety to the incoming alkene (π-ligand exchange) and the less favored ring-opening by attack at an iranium carbon to give a cis-bicyclic selenonium ion as supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Branching ratios of each pathway indicated that electron-withdrawing groups directed more attack at carbon than selenium in agreement with previous solution-phase results. Increased steric bulk on selenium was investigated by changing the R group from a methyl to t-butyl, which not only shut down π-ligand exchange but also significantly reduced the overall reactivity. Finally, the reactivity of the iranium ion derived from Se-methylselenocysteine was investigated and shown to react faster and favor π-ligand exchange as the leaving group was changed from ethene to acrylic acid.

Highly Active La(III)-Based Metal-Organic Framework as a Heterogeneous Lewis Acid Catalyst for Friedel-Crafts Alkylation

In this study, a novel La(III)-based two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework, [La_2/3 (qptca)_1/2 ] (referred to as SLX-2), from LaCl₃ and 1,1' : 4',1'' : 4'',1''' : 4''',1''''-quinquephenyl]-2,2'',2'''',5''-tetracarboxylic acid (H₄ qptca) was synthesized by conventional solvothermal method and thoroughly characterized by using X-ray single-crystal diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analyses. The 2D SLX-2 features a unique lanthanum center exposed to the skeleton and was used as an efficient Lewis acid catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indole and pyrrole with β-nitrostyrene along with a wide substrate scope, giving the desired products in good-to-high yields under the optimal reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst was used for twenty cycles, with nearly no effect on its activity, and the reaction was heterogeneous in nature. Moreover, compared to the previous hydrogen-bond-donating MOF catalysts for such alkylation reactions, SLX-2 showed an excellent stability toward harsh acidic and basic environment, and gave comparable catalytic activities.

InI3-catalyzed polyene cyclization of allenes and its application in the total synthesis of seven abietane-type diterpenoids

A novel polyene cyclization using the allene group as the initiator has been successfully developed. This methodology provides an efficient strategy for the construction of an abietane-type tricyclic skeleton with a functionalizable C2-C3 double bond and features a wide substrate scope and excellent stereoselectivities. Potential utility of this approach has been well demonstrated by the collective total synthesis of seven abietane-type diterpenoids. Specifically, (±)-2,3-dihydroxyferruginol and (±)-2,3-dihydroxy-15,16-dinor-ent-pimar-8,11,13-triene were synthesized for the first time.

Heterocyclization of Bis(2-chloroprop-2-en-1-yl)sulfide in Hydrazine Hydrate–KOH: Synthesis of Thiophene and Pyrrole Derivatives

The article is devoted to heterocyclization of bis(2-chloroprop-2-en-1-yl)sulfide which proceeds in hydrazine hydrate–alkali medium and leads to formation of thiophene and pyrrole derivatives: previously described 4,5,9,10-tetrahydrocycloocta[1,2-c;5,8-c’]dithiophene, as well as unknown hydrazone of 5-methylidene-3-methyldihydrothiophen-2-one and 1-amino-2-(propynylsulfanylpropenylsulfanyl)-3,5-dimethylpyrrole. Tentative mechanisms for the formation of the heterocyclic products are discussed. Obtained hydrazone of 5-methylidene-3-methyldihydrothiophen-2-one was used for the synthesis of a range of azine derivatives and in oxidation process with SeO₂. The found reactions open up expedient approaches to the formation of various hardly accessible thiophene and pyrrole compounds from 2,3-dichloropropene and elemental sulfur as starting reagents.

Chiral Chalcogenide-Catalyzed Enantioselective Electrophilic Hydrothiolation of Alkenes

A new strategy for the construction of chiral sulfides by catalytic enantioselective hydrothiolation of alkenes via an electrophilic pathway has been developed. Using this strategy, cyclic and acyclic unactivated alkenes efficiently afforded various chiral products in the presence of electrophilic sulfur reagents and silanes through chiral chalcogenide catalysis. The obtained products were easily transformed into other types of valuable chiral sulfur-containing compounds. Mechanistic studies revealed that the superior construction of chiral thiiranium ion intermediate is the key to achieving such a transformation.

Experimental and theoretical investigations into the mechanisms of haliranium ion π-ligand exchange reactions with cyclic alkenes in the gas phase

Haliranium ions are intermediates often involved in complex cyclisations, where their structure allows for control over stereospecific outcomes. Extending previous studies into their structure and reactivity in the gas phase, this work focuses on the bimolecular reactivity of ethyl bromiranium and iodiranium ions with cyclic alkenes. The products observed via mass spectrometry were broadly attributed to either addition by cyclohexene at the iranium carbon or attack at the heteroatom to undergo associative π-ligand exchange. The model proposed was supported by both kinetic experiments and DFT calculations, where the rate of parent ion consumption proceeded at the collision rate (Br: k₂ = 1.25 × 10^-9 and I: k₂ = 1.28 × 10^-9 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1) with the subsequent partitioning dependent on the relative stability of the initial intermediates and the relatively large barriers present in the addition pathway. Exploration of the effect of cycloalkene ring strain on the iodiranium ion reactivity was conducted with a series of crossover experiments with 50 : 50 mixtures of either cyclohexene or cis-cyclooctene and styrene, where the outcomes were dependent on the competing ring strain relief gained by reaction with each neutral. The nature of the exchange transition state was determined to be pseudocoarctate following both natural bond orbital (NBO) and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) analysis.

Fluorine-Retentive Strategies for the Functionalization of gem-Difluoroalkenes

gem-Difluoroalkenes are readily available fluorinated building blocks, and the fluorine-induced electronic perturbations of the alkenes enables a wide array of selective functionalization reactions. However, many reactions of gem-difluoroalkenes result in a net C─F functionalization to generate monofluorovinyl products or addition of F to generate trifluoromethyl-containing products. In contrast, fluorine-retentive strategies for the functionalization of gem-difluoroalkenes remain less generally developed, and is now becoming a rapidly developing area. This review will present the development of fluorine-retentive strategies including electrophilic, nucleophilic, radical, and transition metal catalytic strategies with an emphasis on key physical organic and mechanistic aspects that enable reactivities.

Highly Selective and Catalytic C-N Bond Cleavage of Tertiary Sulfonamides: Scope and Mechanistic Insight

A highly chemoselective C-N bond cleavage reaction of p-methoxybenzyl- (PMB), 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl- (DMB), or cinnamyl-substituted tertiary sulfonamides in the presence of catalytic Bi(OTf)₃ is presented. A wide range of sulfonamide substrates smoothly furnished the corresponding C-N bond cleavage products in good to excellent yields. Great efforts have been made to obtain insights into the reaction mechanism based on a series of control experiments and mass spectroscopy.
