Synthesis of 3,4,5-trisubstituted phenols via Rh(III)-catalyzed alkenyl C-H activation assisted by phosphonium cations

An efficient method for the construction of various 3,4,5-trisubstituted phenol derivatives has been achieved via the Rh(III)-catalyzed coupling of phosphonium cations with internal alkynes. This protocol shows good substrate compatibility, as an array of structurally and electronically diverse phosphonium compounds react efficiently with up to 87% yield.

Rh(III)-catalyzed [4 + 1] cyclization of aryl substituted pyrazoles with cyclopropanols via C-H activation

A rhodium-catalyzed formal [4 + 1]-cyclization reaction of aryl substituted pyrazoles with cyclopropanols via C-H bond activation/cyclization processes to selectively construct a series of carbonyl functionalized pyrazolo[5,1-a]isoindoles is described. The reaction features good functional group compatibility and a broad substrate scope with respect to both cyclization components with up to 84% yields. Mechanistic studies indicated that the C-H cleavage might be the rate-determining step in this transformation.

Palladium-catalyzed interannular C-H amination of biaryl amines

A palladium-catalyzed interannular C-H amination of biaryl amines with O-benzoylhydroxylamines is reported. This reaction undergoes smoothly with operational practicality and good tolerance of functional groups, thereby providing a concise synthesis of 2,2'-diaminobiaryls. Moreover, the readily accessible scale-up synthesis and the ability to transform the products into structurally diverse N-containing heterocycles demonstrate the synthetic potential of this catalytic protocol.

Synthesis of 7-Arylthiomethyl Dibenzo[b,d]azepines through Imidoylative Heck Cyclization and CPA-Catalyzed Thio-Michael Addition/Enantioselective Protonation

A chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed thio-Michael addition/enantioselective protonation has been developed for the first time. The reaction applies 7-methylene-6-aryl-7H-dibenzo[b,d]azepines, products of Pd-catalyzed imidoylative Heck cyclization, as Michael acceptors in reactions with a wide range of aryl thiols. Diversified 7-[(arylthio)methyl]-7H-dibenzo[b,d]azepines bearing a benzylic stereocenter and a thermodynamically regulated biaryl axis were produced with good to excellent enantioselectivity and 14-25:1 diastereoisomeric ratios.

C-H bond functionalization by high-valent cobalt catalysis: current progress, challenges and future perspectives

Over the last decade, high-valent cobalt catalysis has earned a place in the spotlight as a valuable tool for C-H activation and functionalization. Since the discovery of its unique reactivity, more and more attention has been directed towards the utilization of cobalt as an alternative to noble metal catalysts. In particular, Cp*Co(III) complexes, as well as simple Co(II) and Co(III) salts in combination with bidentate chelation assistance, have been extensively used for the development of novel transformations. In this review, we have demonstrated the existing trends in the C-H functionalization methodology using high-valent cobalt catalysis and highlighted the main challenges to overcome, as well as perspective directions, which need to be further developed in the future.

I2 -Promoted Intramolecular Oxidative Cyclization of Butenyl Anilines: A Facile Route to Benzo[b]azepines

A metal-free approach for the synthesis of seven-membered N-heterocycles has been developed by the I₂ -promoted intramolecular cross-coupling/annulation of butenyl anilines. This cyclization reaction involves C-H activation and C-C bond formation and exhibits good functional group tolerance. A series of benzo[b]azepine derivatives are obtained in moderate to good yields.

Accessing Extended Fused Isoindolinones Via Sequential Anionic Intramolecular Cyclizations

Sequential anionic intramolecular cyclizations and modelling were used for the first time to access unusual fused heterocyclic frameworks in excellent yields. 5-Exo-dig cyclizations yielded isoindolinone motifs and a subsequent 6-exo- and 7-endo-dig cyclization was directed to provide either fused isoquinoline or azepine frameworks. Regioselectivities were controlled by exploiting stereoelectronic effects via n_C- →π*_(Ph) interactions, and modelling studies provided reaction scope.

Construction of 2-(2-Arylphenyl)azoles via Cobalt-Catalyzed C-H/C-H Cross-Coupling Reactions and Evaluation of Their Antifungal Activity

Although compounds with a 2-(2-arylphenyl) benzoxazole motif are biologically important, there are only a few methods for synthesizing them. Herein, we report an efficient method for synthesis of such compounds by means of cobalt-catalyzed C-H/C-H cross-coupling reactions. This method has a broad substrate scope and good tolerance for sensitive functional groups. In addition, we demonstrate that introducing a heteroarene moiety to biphenyl compounds enhanced their antifungal activity.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Electrochemical Synthesis of Indolines through Dehydrogenative [3 + 2] Annulation with H2 Evolution

A dehydrogenative [3 + 2] annulation reaction of aniline derivatives and alkenes has been developed via the ruthenium-electron catalytic systems for the synthesis of versatile indolines. Electricity is used as a sustainable oxidant to regenerate the active Ru(II) catalyst and promote H₂ evolution. This protocol is ecofriendly and easy to handle as it uses a simple undivided cell in mild conditions without the employment of metal oxidants.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Oxidative C-H Activation: Strategies and Concepts

Inexpensive cobalt-catalyzed oxidative C-H functionalization has emerged as a powerful tool for the construction of C-C and C-Het bonds, which offers unique potential for transformative applications to modern organic synthesis. In the early stage, these transformations typically required stoichiometric and toxic transition metals as sacrificial oxidants; thus, the formation of metal-containing waste was inevitable. In contrast, naturally abundant molecular O₂ has more recently been successfully employed as a green oxidant in cobalt catalysis, thus considerably improving the sustainability of such transformations. Recently, a significant momentum was gained by the use of electricity as a sustainable and environmentally benign redox reagent in cobalt-catalyzed C-H functionalization, thereby preventing the consumption of cost-intensive chemicals while at the same time addressing the considerable safety hazards related to the use of molecular oxygen in combination with flammable organic solvents. Considering the unparalleled potential of the aforementioned approaches for sustainable green synthesis, this Review summarizes the recent progress in cobalt-catalyzed oxidative C-H activation until early 2020.

Cobaltaelectro-catalyzed oxidative allene annulation by electro-removable hydrazides

An efficient C-H/N-H functionalization with allenes was enabled via versatile electro-oxidative cobalt catalysis. Thus, electrochemical C-H activations were accomplished with high levels of chemoselectivity and regioselectivity in an operationally simple undivided cell setup. The user-friendly nature of this protocol was highlighted by excellent functional group tolerance, an electro-reductive removable hydrazide directing group and easy scalability. Experimental mechanistic studies were indicative of a facile BIES C-H cobaltation event.
