Copper-Catalyzed Three-Component Synthesis of β-Hydroxysulfides from Styrene Oxide, Aryl Iodide, and Carbon Disulfide

A copper-catalyzed three-component coupling reaction of styrene oxide, aryl iodide, and carbon disulfide for the construction of β-hydroxysulfides has been developed. In this process, readily available CS2 was used as the sulfur source to construct C-S bonds for the synthesis of phenyl-β-hydroxysulfides and (benzo[d]thiazol)-β-hydroxysulfides. This process features mild reaction conditions, simple operation, and wide substrate scope (>50 examples).

Metal-Free Electrochemical Reduction of Disulfides in an Undivided Cell under Mass Transfer Control

Electroorganic synthesis is generally considered to be a green alternative to conventional redox reactions. Electrochemical reductions, however, are less advantageous in terms of sustainability, as sacrificial metal anodes are often employed. Divided cell operation avoids contact of the reduction products with the anode and allows for convenient solvent oxidation, enabling metal free greener electrochemical reductions. However, the ion exchange membranes required for divided cell operation on a commercial scale are not amenable to organic solvents, which hinders their applicability. Herein, we demonstrate that electrochemical reduction of oxidatively sensitive compounds can be carried out in an undivided cell without sacrificial metal anodes by controlling the mass transport to a small surface area electrode. The concept is showcased by an electrochemical method for the reductive cleavage of aryl disulfides. Fine tuning of the electrode surface area and current density has enabled the preparation of a wide variety of thiols without formation of any oxidation side products. This strategy is anticipated to encourage further research on greener, metal free electrochemical reductions.

Fe3O4@ABA-aniline-CuI nanocomposite as a highly efficient and reusable nanocatalyst for the synthesis of benzothiazole-sulfide aryls and heteroaryls

Studying diaryl sulfides and benzothiazoles is important in organic synthesis because numerous natural and medicinal products contain these scaffolds. Over the past few years, research on the synthesis of compounds containing benzothiazole-sulfide aryls, as important biological molecules, has received significant attention. Multicomponent reactions are the most popular strategy for performing difficult reactions and the synthesis of complexed molecules such as benzothiazole-sulfide aryls. In this work, CuI was successfully immobilized on the surface of magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles modified with aniline and 4-aminobenzoic acid [Fe₃O₄@ABA-Aniline-CuI nanocomposite] and its catalytic activity was investigated in the preparation of a broad range of benzothiazole-sulfide aryls and heteroaryls through the one-pot three-component reactions of 2-iodoaniline with carbon disulfide and aryl or heteroaryl iodides in the presence of KOAc as base in PEG-400 as solvent. TEM and SEM images revealed that the shape of the Fe₃O₄@ABA-Aniline-CuI particles is spherical and the size of the particles is approximately between 12-25 nanometers.

Access to Sulfur-Containing Bisheterocycles through Base-Promoted Consecutive Tandem Cyclization/Sulfenylation with Elemental Sulfur

A convenient and efficient tandem cyclization/sulfenylation of o-alkynyl-phenols/-anilines/enaminones for the synthesis of diverse sulfur-containing bisheterocycles has been developed using stable, odorless, and easy-to-handle elemental S₈ as a building block under green chemistry conditions. Notably, a one-step simple base-mediated organic transformation affords a benzofuran (indole or chromone) ring and two C-S bonds. Attractive features of this methodology include the absence of a metal catalyst, mild conditions, good functional group tolerance, and valuable product structures.

Copper-Catalyzed Difluoroalkylation Reaction

This review describes recent advances in copper-catalyzed difluoroalkylation reactions. The RCF₂ radical is generally proposed in the mechanism of these reactions. At present, various types of copper-catalyzed difluoroalkylation reactions have been realized. According to their characteristics, we classify these difluoroalkylation reactions into three types.

Spray-Assisted Interfacial Polymerization to Form CuII/I@CMC-PANI Film: An Efficient Dip Catalyst for A3 Reaction

A novel and interesting method for the preparation of carboxymethylcellulose–polyaniline film-supported copper catalyst (Cu^II/I@CMC-PANI) has been developed via spray-assisted interfacial polymerization. Using copper sulfate as an initiator, spraying technology was introduced to form a unique interface that is perfectly beneficial to the polymerization of aniline monomers onto carboxymethylcellulose macromolecule chains. To further confirm the composition and structure of the as-prepared hybrid film, it was systematically characterized by inductively coupled plasma (ICP), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The Cu content in the fresh Cu^II/I@CMC-PANI film was determined to be 1.805 mmol/g, and spherical nanoparticles with an average size of ca. 10.04 nm could be observed in the hybrid film. The Cu^II/I@CMC-PANI hybrid film was exerted as a dip catalyst to catalyze the aldehyde–alkyne–amine (A³) coupling reactions. High yields of the products (up to 97%) were obtained in this catalytic system, and the catalyst could be easily picked up from the reaction mixture by tweezers and reused for at least six consecutive runs, without any discernible losses in its activity in the model reaction. The dip catalyst of Cu^II/I@CMC-PANI, with easy fabrication, convenient deployment, superior catalytic activity, and great reusability, is expected to be very useful in organic synthesis.

HFIP promoted thio(hetero)arylation of imidazoheterocycles under metal- and base-free conditions

A new reaction methodology has been developed for HFIP promoted Thio(hetero)arylation of imidazoheterocycles under metal and base-free conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that describes linking of imidazopyridines with electron deficient heteroarenes through a sulphur atom and also for the synthesis of most of these compounds. The reaction conditions are well tolerated by almost all kinds of 2-chloroheteroarenes and a wide range of imidazoheterocycles. The synthesized compounds can show significant biological properties.

Copper-Catalyzed C-3 Functionalization of Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines with 3-Indoleacetic Acids

A copper-catalyzed C-3 functionalization of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines with 3-indoleacetic acids through an aerobic oxidative decarboxylative process has been developed. The protocol provided a series of 3-(1H-indol-3-ylmethyl)-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines in moderate to good yields under simple reaction conditions. Importantly, some products exhibited potent antiproliferative activity in cancer cell lines.

Recent developments and perspectives in the copper-catalyzed multicomponent synthesis of heterocycles

Heterocyclic compounds have become an inevitable part of organic chemistry due to their ubiquitous presence in bioactive compounds. Copper-catalyzed multicomponent synthesis of heterocycles has developed as the most convenient and facile synthetic route towards complex heterocyclic motifs. In this review, we discuss the advancements in the field of copper-catalyzed multicomponent reactions for the preparation of heterocycles since 2018.

Heterocycles are abundant in several pharmaceutical and naturally occurring compounds. Copper-catalyzed multicomponent reactions are a convenient method for easy access to heterocycles. In this review, we focus on the advancement in this field for the past two years.

Transition-metal-free sulfonylations of methylthiolated alkynones to synthesize 3-sulfonylated thioflavones

A set of transition-metal-free NaI/TBHP-mediated sulfonylation cyclization reactions of methylthiolated alkynones with sulfonyl hydrazides was developed, by which various 3-sulfonylated thioflavones were prepared under mild reaction conditions.

Molecular iodine-catalyzed multicomponent synthesis of α-cyanopyrrolines with ambient air as the oxidant under neat conditions

An eco-friendly and practical method for synthesizing α-cyanopyrrolines via iodine-catalyzed multicomponent tandem reaction of alkenes, TMSCN and N,N-disubstituted formamides with ambient air as the sole oxidant was developed.
