Preparation and Properties of GMS/HTSF-Modified Waterborne Polyurethane Fluorine-Free Waterproof and Breathable Film

Developing a fluorine-free, durable, high-performance waterproof breathable film for fabrics remains a formidable challenge. In this paper, a strategy for the preparation of fluorine-free, durable, and high-efficiency fabric waterproof and breathable membranes using glyceryl monostearate (GMS)/double-ended hydroxy silicone oil (HTSF)-modified waterborne polyurethane was proposed. The orderly orientation of GMS and HTSF gives the fabric excellent water-repellent properties, and the polyurethane macromolecular chain ensures strong adhesion of long-chain alkanes and silicones to the fabric surface. In this paper, the effects of different GMS contents on the stability, chemical structure, particle size, viscosity, water absorption performance, surface morphology, and XPS of a waterborne polyurethane fluorine-free waterproof and breathable membrane (GHWPU) were studied. At the same time, the application properties of GHWPU-treated fabrics, such as waterproof performance, antifouling performance, surface energy, morphology, and air permeability, were discussed. Through the analysis of SEM and XPS, it was found that the folds on the surface of the film were more and more orderly with the increasing content of GMS, and this orderly distribution of water-repellent groups endowed the film with excellent water-repellent ability. When the GMS content was 28 wt %, the finished fabrics had excellent comprehensive properties such as static contact angle of 141.6°, hydrostatic pressure of 96.7 KPa, resistance to more than 30 washes, and air permeability of 119.3 mm/s.

Gelatin–Siloxane Hybrid Monoliths as Novel Heavy Metal Adsorbents

Novel gelatin-siloxane hybrid monoliths for heavy metal removal were prepared in the chemical reaction of gelatin with organomodified silicone containing epoxy group. Obtained porous hybrid materials were applied for adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. In this paper, the influence of siloxane amount used for the modification of gelatin on adsorbent stability and heavy metal removal was examined. The effect of pH values of the immersion liquid, as well as the contact time, was studied. Morphology, compressive strength and water absorption of hybrid monoliths were investigated. Desorption tests were also performed. The results showed that the higher the amount of the siloxane, the better stability of the hybrid monoliths in aqueous solutions. The highest values of adsorption capacity were observed for Pb(II) ions. The experimental maximum adsorption capacity determined for hybrid monoliths was 3.75 mg/g for Pb(II), 1.76 mg/g for Cu(II) and 1.5 mg/g for Cd(II). The desorption of metal ions for hybrid monoliths stable in aqueous solutions reached 70%.

Preparation and properties of gelatin hydrolysate modified with polysiloxane quaternary ammonium salts

PSiQAEp-GH polymers were synthesized by the reaction of gelatin hydrolysate (GH) and polysiloxane quaternary ammonium salts containing epoxy group (PSiQAEp) with different molecular weight from 3147 to 12996. The results of FTIR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR showed that the reaction occurred between primary amino group of arginine in GH and epoxy of PSiQAEp. The XRD and DSC studies showed that the degree of short-range order of PSiQAEp-GH reduced and its glass transition temperature (Tg) lowered more than 10 °C compared with GH. The determinations of moisture absorption and contact angle (CA) indicated that the hydrophobility of PSiQAEp-GH was better than GH. The tests of inhibitory zone and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) illustrated that the PSiQAEp-GHs exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, and the antibacterial activity depended on both the chemical structure of PSiQAEp-GHs and the biological structure of the bacteria.

Preparation and Enrichment Properties of Magnetic Dodecyl Chitosan/Silica Composite for Emerging Bisphenol Contaminants

Magnetic dodecyl chitosan/silica composite was synthesized and characterized for the enrichment of emerging bisphenol contaminants. The result demonstrated that bispehnol A, bisphenol AF, bisphenol F, and bisphenol S can be efficiently extracted via the resulting composite from aqueous solution. The adsorption rate of four investigated bisphenols on the resulting composite was achieved in the range of 87⁻99% within 15 min. Bispehnol A was taken as a representative adsorbate to investigate the adsorption studies in detail. The hydrophobic interaction was proposed as the principal mechanism for the adsorption of BPs. The satisfactory reusability of the resulting composite can be quickly achieved by magnetic separation technologies. Magnetic dodecyl chitosan/silica composite has a potential to be applied as a type of efficient and easily recyclable sorbent for the removal of trace organic pollutants from aqueous sample.
