Synergistic effects of carbon black and carbon nanotubes on the electrical resistivity of poly(butylene-terephthalate) nanocomposites

Simulation of self-heating process on the nanoscale: a multiscale approach for molecular models of nanocomposite materials

A theoretical-computational protocol to model the Joule heating process in nanocomposite materials is presented. The proposed modeling strategy is based on post processing of trajectories obtained from large scale molecular simulations. This protocol, based on molecular models, is the first one to be applied to organic nanocomposites based on carbon nanotubes (CNT). This strategy allows to keep a microscopic explicit picture of the systems, to directly catch the molecular structure underlying the process under study and, at the same time, to include macroscopic boundary conditions fixed in the experiments. As validation and first application of the proposed strategy, a detailed investigation on CNT based organic composites is reported. The effect of CNT morphologies, concentration and working conditions on Joule heating has been modelled and compared with available experiments. Further experiments are performed also in this work to increase the number of comparisons especially in specific voltage ranges where available references from literature were missing. Simulations are in both qualitative and quantitative agreement with several experiments and trends reported in the recent literature, as well as with experiments performed in this work. The proposed approach combined with large scale hybrid particle-field molecular simulations can give insights and opens to way to a rational design of self-heating nanocomposites.

Selection of Immiscible Polymer Blends Filled with Carbon Nanotubes for Heating Applications

In many application fields, such as medicine or sports, heating textiles use electrically conductive multifilaments. This multifilament can be developed from conductive polymer composites (CPC), which are blends of an insulating polymer filled with electrically conductive particles. However, this multifilament must have filler content above the percolation threshold, which leads to an increase of the viscosity and problems during the melt spinning process. Immiscible blends between two polymers (one being a CPC) can be used to allow the reduction of the global filler content if each polymer is co-continuous with a selective localization of the fillers in only one polymer. In this study, three immiscible blends were developed between polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, or polyamide 6 and a filled polycaprolactone with carbon nanotubes. The morphology of each blend at different ratios was studied using models of co-continuity and prediction of fillers localization according to viscosity, interfacial energy, elastic modulus, and loss factor of each polymer. This theoretical approach was compared to experimental values to find out differences between methods. The electrical properties (electrical conductivity and Joule effect) were also studied. The co-continuity, the selective localization in the polycaprolactone, and the Joule effect were only exhibited by the polypropylene/filled polycaprolactone 50/50 wt.%.

Novel definition of the synergistic effect between carbon nanotubes and carbon black for electrical conductivity

Anisotropic ternary composites comprising poly(methy-methacrylate) (PMMA), carbon black (CB), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were extruded using a capillary rheometer and the electrical conductivities of the composites were measured and presented in a detailed contour plot covering a large range of filler fractions (up to 30 vol% CNTs, 20 vol% CB). A recent generic conductivity model for ternary composites was successfully validated using the conductivity measurements. When analyzing the conductivity measurements using four traditional definitions of 'synergy' between two conductive fillers, no clear synergetic effect was observed between CB and CNT. Also, when all the conductivity data for ternary CNT/CB composites from the existing literature was carefully gathered and analyzed, the number of confirmed occurrences of strong and convincing CNT/CB synergies was surprisingly low. Finally, a novel definition of synergy based on the physical aspect, in particular, its maximum, the 'synergasm', was defined in order to obtain a more precise instrument for revealing regions of potential synergy.
