Versatile Applications of Metal Single-Atom @ 2D Material Nanoplatforms

Multifunctional nano-in-micro delivery systems for targeted therapy in fundus neovascularization diseases

Fundus neovascularization diseases are a series of blinding eye diseases that seriously impair vision worldwide. Currently, the means of treating these diseases in clinical practice are continuously evolving and have rapidly revolutionized treatment opinions. However, key issues such as inadequate treatment effectiveness, high rates of recurrence, and poor patient compliance still need to be urgently addressed. Multifunctional nanomedicine can specifically respond to both endogenous and exogenous microenvironments, effectively deliver drugs to specific targets and participate in activities such as biological imaging and the detection of small molecules. Nano-in-micro (NIM) delivery systems such as metal, metal oxide and up-conversion nanoparticles (NPs), quantum dots, and carbon materials, have shown certain advantages in overcoming the presence of physiological barriers within the eyeball and are widely used in the treatment of ophthalmic diseases. Few studies, however, have evaluated the efficacy of NIM delivery systems in treating fundus neovascular diseases (FNDs). The present study describes the main clinical treatment strategies and the adverse events associated with the treatment of FNDs with NIM delivery systems and summarizes the anatomical obstacles that must be overcome. In this review, we wish to highlight the principle of intraocular microenvironment normalization, aiming to provide a more rational approach for designing new NIM delivery systems to treat specific FNDs.

Single-Atom based Metal-Organic Framework Photocatalysts for Solar-Fuel Generation

The growing demand for fossil fuels and subsequent CO2 emissions prompted a search for alternate sources of energy and a reduction in CO2. Photocatalysis driven by solar light has been found as a potential research area to tackle both these problems. In this direction, SAC@MOF (Single-atom loaded MOFs) photocatalysis is an emerging field and a promising technology. The unique properties of single-atom catalysts (SACs), such as high catalytic activity and selectivity, are leveraged in these systems. Photocatalysis, focusing on the utilization of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as platforms for creating single-atom catalysts (SACs) characterized by metal single-atoms (SAs) as their active sites, are noted for their unparalleled atomic efficiency, precisely defined active sites, and superior photocatalytic performance. The synergy between MOFs and SAs in photocatalytic systems is meticulously examined, highlighting how they collectively enhance photocatalytic efficiency. This review examines SAC@MOF development and applications in environmental and energy sectors, focusing on synthesis and stabilization methods for SACs on MOFs and also characterization techniques vital for understanding these catalysts. The potential of SAC@MOF in CO2 Photoreduction and Photocatalytic H2 evolution is highlighted, emphasizing its role in green energy technologies and advances in materials science and Photocatalysis.

Mechanism of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction by borophene supported bimetallic catalysts

Bimetal atom catalysts (BACs) hold significant potential for various applications as a result of the synergistic interaction between adjacent metal atoms. This interaction leads to improved catalytic performance, while simultaneously maintaining high atomic efficiency and exceptional selectivity, similar to single atom catalysts (SACs). Bimetallic site catalysts (M2β12) supported by β12-borophene were developed as catalysts for electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). The research on density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that M2β12 exhibits exceptional stability, conductivity, and catalytic activity. Investigating the most efficient reaction pathway for CO2RR by analyzing the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) during potential determining steps (PDS) and choosing a catalyst with outstanding catalytic performance for CO2RR. The overpotential required for Fe2β12 and Ag2β12 to generate CO is merely 0.05 V. This implies that the conversion of CO2 to CO can be accomplished with minimal additional voltage. The overpotential values for Cu2β12 and Ag2β12 during the formation of HCOOH were merely 0.001 and 0.07 V, respectively. Furthermore, the Rh2β12 catalyst exhibits a relatively low overpotential of 0.51 V for CH3OH and 0.65 V for CH4. The Fe2β12 produces C2H4 through the *CO-*CO pathway, while Ag2β12 generates CH3CH2OH via the *CO-*CHO coupling pathway, with remarkably low overpotentials of 0.84 and 0.60 V, respectively. The study provides valuable insights for the systematic design and screening of electrocatalysts for CO2RR that exhibit exceptional catalytic performance and selectivity.

Unveiling Cutting-Edge Developments in Electrocatalytic Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

The excessive enrichment of nitrate in the environment can be converted into ammonia (NH3) through electrochemical processes, offering significant implications for modern agriculture and the potential to reduce the burden of the Haber-Bosch (HB) process while achieving environmentally friendly NH3 production. Emerging research on electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (eNitRR) to NH3 has gained considerable momentum in recent years for efficient NH3 synthesis. However, existing reviews on nitrate reduction have primarily focused on limited aspects, often lacking a comprehensive summary of catalysts, reaction systems, reaction mechanisms, and detection methods employed in nitrate reduction. This review aims to provide a timely and comprehensive analysis of the eNitRR field by integrating existing research progress and identifying current challenges. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the research progress achieved using various materials in electrochemical nitrate reduction, elucidates the underlying theoretical mechanism behind eNitRR, and discusses effective strategies based on numerous case studies to enhance the electrochemical reduction from NO3 - to NH3. Finally, this review discusses challenges and development prospects in the eNitRR field with an aim to guide design and development of large-scale sustainable nitrate reduction electrocatalysts.

Single Atom Catalyst in Persulfate Oxidation Reaction: From Atom Species to Substance

With maximum utilization of active metal sites, more and more researchers have reported using single atom catalysts (SACs) to activate persulfate (PS) for organic pollutants removal. In SACs, single metal atoms (Fe, Co, Cu, Mn, etc.) and different substrates (porous carbon, biochar, graphene oxide, carbon nitride, MOF, MoS2 , and others) are the basic structural. Metal single atoms, substances, and connected chemical bonds all have a great influence on the electronic structures that directly affect the activation process of PS and degradation efficiency to organic pollutants. However, there are few relevant reviews about the interaction between metal single atoms and substances during PS activation process. In this review, the SACs with different metal species and substrates are summarized to investigate the metal-support interaction and evaluate their effects on PS oxidation reaction process. Furthermore, how metal atoms and substrates affect the reactive species and degradation pathways are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of SACs in PS-AOPs are proposed.

Computational Screening of a Single-Atom Catalyst Supported by Monolayer Nb2S2C for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The search for high-performance catalysts to improve the catalytic activity for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for developing a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Using the first-principles method, we have performed computational screening on a series of transition metal (TM) atoms embedded in monolayer Nb2S2C to enhance the ORR activity. Through the scaling relationship and volcano plot, our results reveal that the introduction of a single Ni or Rh atom through substitutional doping into monolayer Nb2S2C yields promising ORR catalysts with low overpotentials of 0.52 and 0.42 V, respectively. These doped atoms remain intact on the monolayer Nb2S2C even at elevated temperatures. Importantly, the catalytic activity of the Nb2S2C doped with a TM atom can be effectively correlated with an intrinsic descriptor, which can be computed based on the number of d orbital electrons and the electronegativity of TM and O atoms.

Recent Advances of Emerging Metal-Containing Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials in Tumor Theranostics

In recent years, metal-containing two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, among various 2D nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties, especially in the fields of biomedical applications. Firstly, the review provides a brief introduction to two types of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials, based on whether metal species take up the major skeleton of the 2D nanomaterials. After this, the synthetical approaches are summarized, focusing on two strategies similar to other 2D nanomaterials, top-down and bottom-up methods. Then, the performance and evaluation of these 2D nanomaterials when applied to cancer therapy are discussed in detail. The specificity of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials in physics and optics makes them capable of killing cancer cells in a variety of ways, such as photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy and so on. Besides, the integrated platform of diagnosis and treatment and the clinical translatability through metal-containing 2D nanomaterials is also introduced in this review. In the summary and perspective section, advanced rational design, challenges and promising clinical contributions to cancer therapy of these emerging metal-containing 2D nanomaterials are discussed.

Emerging Xene-Based Single-Atom Catalysts: Theory, Synthesis, and Catalytic Applications

In recent years, the emergence of novel 2D monoelemental materials (Xenes), e.g., graphdiyne, borophene, phosphorene, antimonene, bismuthene, and stanene, has exhibited unprecedented potentials for their versatile applications as well as addressing new discoveries in fundamental science. Owing to their unique physicochemical, optical, and electronic properties, emerging Xenes have been regarded as promising candidates in the community of single-atom catalysts (SACs) as single-atom active sites or support matrixes for significant improvement in intrinsic activity and selectivity. In order to comprehensively understand the relationships between the structure and property of Xene-based SACs, this review represents a comprehensive summary from theoretical predictions to experimental investigations. Firstly, theoretical calculations regarding both the anchoring of Xene-based single-atom active sites on versatile support matrixes and doping/substituting heteroatoms at Xene-based support matrixes are briefly summarized. Secondly, controlled synthesis and precise characterization are presented for Xene-based SACs. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for the development of Xene-based SACs are highlighted.

Immobilization of isolated dimethyltin species on crystalline silicates through surface modification of layered octosilicate

Single metal atoms supported on silica are attractive catalysts, and precise control of the local environment around the metal species is essential. Crystalline silica is useful as an efficient support for the incorporation of well-defined metal sites. Dimethyltin species were regularly grafted onto the layer surfaces of layered octosilicate, a type of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline silica. Dimethyltin dichlorides react with the surface silanol (SiOH) groups of the silicate layers. The formation of Si-O-Sn bonds was confirmed by 29Si magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis showed the four-coordinated Sn species. These results suggested the presence of well-defined dipodal dimethyltin species on the layer surfaces. The degree of modification of the silanol groups with the dimethyltin groups increased with increasing amounts of dimethyltin dichloride; however, the maximum degree of modification was approximately 50%. This value was interpreted as an alternate modification of the octosilicate reaction sites with dimethyltin groups. These results demonstrate the potential for developing highly active single metal catalysts with a high density of regularly arranged active sites on high surface area supports.

Progress on Single-Atom Photocatalysts for H2 Generation: Material Design, Catalytic Mechanism, and Perspectives

Solar energy utilization is of great significance to current challenges of the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which benefit the development of the global community to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Hydrogen energy is also treated as a good candidate for future energy supply since its combustion not only supplies high-density energy but also shows no pollution gas. In particular, photocatalytic water splitting has attracted increasing research as a promising method for H2 production. Recently, single-atom (SA) photocatalysts have been proposed as a potential solution to improve catalytic efficiency and lower the costs of photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation. Owing to the maximized atom utilization rate, abundant surface active sites, and tunable coordination environment, SA photocatalysts have achieved significant progress. This review reviews developments of advanced SA photocatalysts for H2 generation regarding the different support materials. The recent progress of titanium dioxide, metal-organic frameworks, two-dimensional carbon materials, and red phosphorus supported SA photocatalysts are carefully discussed. In particular, the material designs, reaction mechanisms, modulation strategies, and perspectives are highlighted for realizing improved solar-to-energy efficiency and H2 generation rate. This work will supply significant references for future design and synthesis of advanced SA photocatalysts.

Single-atom nanozymes: classification, regulation strategy, and safety concerns

Nanozymes, nanomaterials possessing enzymatic activity, have been studied extensively by researchers. However, their complex composition, low density of active sites, and inadequate substrate selectivity have hindered the maturation and widespread acceptance of nanozymes. Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) with atomically dispersed active sites are leading the field of catalysis due to their exceptional performance. The maximum utilization rate of atoms, low cost, well-defined coordination structure, and active sites are the most prominent advantages of SAzymes that researchers favor. This review systematically categorizes SAzymes based on their support type and describes their specific applications. Additionally, we discuss regulation strategies for SAzyme activity and provide a comprehensive summary of biosafety challenges associated with these enzymes.

Reusable nano-catalyzed green protocols for the synthesis of quinoxalines: an overview

Heterocyclic compounds are very widely distributed in nature and are essential for life activities. They play a vital role in the metabolism of all living cells, for example, vitamins and co-enzyme precursors thiamine, riboflavin etc. Quinoxalines are a class of N-heterocycles that are present in a variety of natural and synthetic compounds. The distinct pharmacological activities of quinoxalines have attracted medicinal chemists considerably over the past few decades. Quinoxaline-based compounds possess extensive potential applications as medicinal drugs, presently; more than fifteen drugs are available for the treatment of different diseases. Diverse synthetic protocols have been developed via a one-pot approach using efficient catalysts, reagents, and nano-composites/nanocatalysts etc. But the use of homogeneous and transition metal-based catalysts suffers some demerits such as low atom economy, recovery of catalysts, harsh reaction conditions, extended reaction period, expensive catalysts, the formation of by-products, and unsatisfactory yield of products as well as toxic solvents. These drawbacks have shifted the attention of chemists/researchers to develop green and efficient protocols for synthesizing quinoxaline derivatives. In this context, many efficient methods have been developed for the synthesis of quinoxalines using nanocatalysts or nanostructures. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress (till 2023) in the nano-catalyzed synthesis of quinoxalines using condensation of o-phenylenediamine with diketone/other reagents with plausible mechanistic details. With this review, we hope that some more efficient ways of synthesizing quinoxalines can be developed by synthetic chemists.

Mn Single-Atom Nanozymes with Superior Loading Capability and Superb Superoxide Dismutase-like Activity for Bioassay

Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) with highly exposed active sites and remarkable catalytic activity have shown noteworthy practicability in heterogeneous catalysis-based bioassay. Nevertheless, most of them were reported with peroxidase-like activity and ordinary loading capability. It is still a challenge to prepare high-loading SANs with desirable superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity. In this work, Mn SAN was successfully confined in the frameworks of Prussian blue analogues formed on Ti₃C₂ MXene sheets with the assistance of massive surfactants, which show a superior loading efficiency of 13.5 wt % (typically <2.0 wt %). The prepared Mn SAN exhibits desirable superoxide radical anion elimination capability because of its SOD-like activity. Moreover, due to the wide-spectrum absorption behavior of the carriers, Mn SAN shows a synergistically quenching efficiency up to 98.89% on the emission of the reactive oxygen species-mediated chemiluminescent (CL) system. Inspired by these features, a CL quenching method was developed on a lateral flow test strip platform by utilizing Mn SAN as a signal quencher and acetamiprid as a model analyte. The method for detecting acetamiprid shows a detection range of 1.0-10,000 pg mL^-1 and a limit of detection of 0.3 pg mL^-1. Its accuracy has been validated by detecting acetamiprid in medicinal herbs with acceptable recoveries. This work opens an avenue for preparing SANs with a surfactant-assisted protocol and pioneers the study of SANs with SOD-like activity in bioassay.

Design, synthesis, and application of some two-dimensional materials

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely used as key components in the fields of energy conversion and storage, optoelectronics, catalysis, biomedicine, etc. To meet the practical needs, molecular structure design and aggregation process optimization have been systematically carried out. The intrinsic correlation between preparation methods and the characteristic properties is investigated. This review summarizes the recent research achievements of 2D materials in the aspect of molecular structure modification, aggregation regulation, characteristic properties, and device applications. The design strategies to fabricate functional 2D materials starting from precursor molecules are introduced in detail referring to organic synthetic chemistry and self-assembly technology. It provides important research ideas for the design and synthesis of related materials.

Single-Atom Anchored g-C3N4 Monolayer as Efficient Catalysts for Nitrogen Reduction Reaction

Electrochemical N₂ reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising approach for NH₃ production under mild conditions. Herein, the catalytic performance of 3d transition metal (TM) atoms anchored on s-triazine-based g-C₃N₄ (TM@g-C₃N₄) in NRR is systematically investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Among these TM@g-C₃N₄ systems, the V@g-C₃N₄, Cr@g-C₃N₄, Mn@g-C₃N₄, Fe@g-C₃N₄, and Co@g-C₃N₄ monolayers have lower ΔG(*NNH) values, especially the V@g-C₃N₄ monolayer has the lowest limiting potential of -0.60 V and the corresponding limiting-potential steps are *N2+H++e-=*NNH for both alternating and distal mechanisms. For V@g-C₃N₄, the transferred charge and spin moment contributed by the anchored V atom activate N₂ molecule. The metal conductivity of V@g-C₃N₄ provides an effective guarantee for charge transfer between adsorbates and V atom during N₂ reduction reaction. After N₂ adsorption, the p-d orbital hybridization of *N₂ and V atoms can provide or receive electrons for the intermediate products, which makes the reduction process follow acceptance-donation mechanism. The results provide an important reference to design high efficiency single atom catalysts (SACs) for N₂ reduction.

Room-temperature photosynthesis of propane from CO2 with Cu single atoms on vacancy-rich TiO2

Photochemical conversion of CO₂ into high-value C₂₊ products is difficult to achieve due to the energetic and mechanistic challenges in forming multiple C-C bonds. Herein, an efficient photocatalyst for the conversion of CO₂ into C₃H₈ is prepared by implanting Cu single atoms on Ti_0.91O₂ atomically-thin single layers. Cu single atoms promote the formation of neighbouring oxygen vacancies (V_Os) in Ti_0.91O₂ matrix. These oxygen vacancies modulate the electronic coupling interaction between Cu atoms and adjacent Ti atoms to form a unique Cu-Ti-V_O unit in Ti_0.91O₂ matrix. A high electron-based selectivity of 64.8% for C₃H₈ (product-based selectivity of 32.4%), and 86.2% for total C₂₊ hydrocarbons (product-based selectivity of 50.2%) are achieved. Theoretical calculations suggest that Cu-Ti-V_O unit may stabilize the key *CHOCO and *CH₂OCOCO intermediates and reduce their energy levels, tuning both C₁-C₁ and C₁-C₂ couplings into thermodynamically-favourable exothermal processes. Tandem catalysis mechanism and potential reaction pathway are tentatively proposed for C₃H₈ formation, involving an overall (20e^- - 20H⁺) reduction and coupling of three CO₂ molecules at room temperature.

Activating RuOCo Interaction on the a-Co(OH)2 @Ru Interface for Accelerating the Volmer Step of Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

The state-of-the-art active hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts in acid electrolytes generally lose considerable catalytic performance in alkaline electrolytes mainly due to the additional water dissociation step. Designing composite materials is an effective strategy to accelerate alkaline water electrolysis by optimizing the electronic structure of materials. Here, different phases of Co(OH)₂ -supported Ru clusters (α/β-Co(OH)₂ @Ru) are prepared for enabling a highly efficient electrocatalytic HER performance in alkaline solution. The prepared α-Co(OH)₂ nanosheets facilitate the loading of uniform and high-density Ru clusters and the formed highly active RuOCo bonds at the interface. The synergistic interaction endows the hybrid catalyst with low overpotential of 33 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 . Moreover, the homemade anion exchange membrane water electrolysis cell based on α-Co(OH)₂ @Ru affords a cell voltage of 2 V to drive a current density of 270 mA cm^-2 and performs stably during continuous operation for over 100 h. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that active RuOCo bonds in α-Co(OH)₂ @Ru optimize the energy barriers for H₂ O dissociation and OH^- desorption to facilitate the Volmer reaction step. This work offers a strategy for designing interfacial chemical bonds for high electrocatalytic activity.

New Folding 2D-Layered Nitro-Oxygenated Carbon Containing Ultra High-Loading Copper Single Atoms

The discoveries of 2D nanomaterials have made huge impacts on the scientific community. Their unique properties unlock new technologies and bring significant advances to diverse applications. Herein, an unprecedented 2D-stacked material consisting of copper (Cu) on nitro-oxygenated carbon is disclosed. Unlike any known 2D stacked structures that are usually constructed by stacking of separate 2D layers, this material forms a continuously folded 2D-stacked structure. Interestingly, advanced characterizations indicate that Cu atoms inside the structure are in an atomically-dispersed form with extraordinarily high Cu loading up to 15.9 ± 1.2 wt.%, which is among the highest reported metal loading for single-atom catalysts on 2D supports. Facile exfoliation results in thin 2D nanosheets that maximize the exposure of the unique active sites (two neighboring Cu single atoms), leading to impressive catalytic performance, as demonstrated in the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction.

Synthesis, Toxicity Assessment, Environmental and Biomedical Applications of MXenes: A Review

MXenes are a family of two-dimensional (2D) composite materials based on transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides that have been attracting attention since 2011. Combination of electrical and mechanical properties with hydrophilicity makes them promising materials for biomedical applications. This review briefly discusses methods for the synthesis of MXenes, their potential applications in medicine, ranging from sensors and antibacterial agents to targeted drug delivery, cancer photo/chemotherapy, tissue engineering, bioimaging, and environmental applications such as sensors and adsorbents. We focus on in vitro and in vivo toxicity and possible mechanisms. We discuss the toxicity analogies of MXenes and other 2D materials such as graphene, mentioning the greater biocompatibility of MXenes. We identify existing barriers that hinder the formation of objective knowledge about the toxicity of MXenes. The most important of these barriers are the differences in the methods of synthesis of MXenes, their composition and structure, including the level of oxidation, the number of layers and flake size; functionalization, test concentrations, duration of exposure, and individual characteristics of biological test objects Finally, we discuss key areas for further research that need to involve new methods of nanotoxicology, including predictive computational methods. Such studies will bring closer the prospect of widespread industrial production and safe use of MXene-based products.

Roles of Metal Ions in MXene Synthesis, Processing and Applications: A Perspective

With a decade of effort, significant progress has been achieved in the synthesis, processing, and applications of MXenes. Metal ions play many crucial roles, such as in MXene delamination, structure regulation, surface modification, MXene composite construction, and even some unique applications. The different roles of metal ions are attributed to their many interactions with MXenes and the unique nature of MXenes, including their layered structure, surface chemistry, and the existence of multi-valent transition metals. Interactions with metal ions are crucial for the energy storage of MXene electrodes, especially in metal ion batteries and supercapacitors with neutral electrolytes. This review aims to provide a good understanding of the interactions between metal ions and MXenes, including the classification and fundamental chemistry of their interactions, in order to achieve their more effective utilization and rational design. It also provides new perspectives on MXene evolution and exfoliation, which may suggest optimized synthesis strategies. In this respect, the different effects of metal ions on MXene synthesis and processing are clarified, and the corresponding mechanisms are elaborated. Research progress on the roles metal ions have in MXene applications is also introduced.

Theoretical Predictions, Experimental Modulation Strategies, and Applications of MXene-Supported Atomically Dispersed Metal Sites

Atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs) attract immense attention because they can be used in the fields of energy and environmental protection as they are characterized by high atomic utilization efficiency and exhibit high activity. Various supports for anchoring isolated metal atoms are developed to construct ADMSs characterized by highly stable and well-defined structures. This can be achieved by increasing the number of anchoring sites and reinforcing metal-support interactions. MXenes, a new series of 2D nanomaterials, exhibit promising potential in stabilizing isolated metal atoms because of their large specific surface areas and unique surface properties. The high conductivity and hydrophilicity of MXenes can be attributed to the nature of surface functionalization and the properties of tunable structures of the materials. Benefiting from these excellent properties, MXenes can find their applications in various fields. Herein, the precise characterization methods that can be followed to study ADMSs, the construction of MXene-supported ADMSs using theoretical predictions, and experimental modulation strategies are summarized, and their corresponding applications in electrocatalysis, organocatalysis, and advanced battery systems are systematically illustrated. It is hoped that this review will provide insights that can be used for the further development of MXene-supported ADMSs.

Amidoxime Group-Anchored Single Cobalt Atoms for Anti-Biofouling during Uranium Extraction from Seawater

Marine biofouling is one of the most significant challenges hindering practical uranium extraction from seawater. Single atoms have been widely used in catalytic applications because of their remarkable redox property, implying that the single atom is highly capable of catalyzing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and acts as an anti-biofouling substance for controlling biofouling. In this study, the Co single atom loaded polyacrylamidoxime (PAO) material, PAO-Co, is fabricated based on the binding ability of the amidoxime group to uranyl and cobalt ions. Nitrogen and oxygen atoms from the amidoxime group stabilize the Co single atom. The fabricated PAO-Co exhibits a broad range of antimicrobial activity against diverse marine microorganisms by producing ROS, with an inhibition rate up to 93.4%. The present study is the first to apply the single atom for controlling biofouling. The adsorbent achieves an ultrahigh uranium adsorption capacity of 9.7 mg g^-1 in biofouling-containing natural seawater, which decreased only by 11% compared with that in biofouling-removed natural seawater. These findings indicate that applying single atoms would be a promising strategy for designing biofouling-resistant adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater.

Single Atom Catalysts: An Overview of the Coordination and Interactions with Metallic Supports

Catalyst utilization is a key economic factor in heterogeneous catalysis, particularly, when noble metals are used as the active phase. A huge saving on catalyst cost can be achieved with developing a single atomic layer of the active catalyst on a given cheap support. Besides the economic benefit, single atom catalysts (SACs) have also shown superior activity and selectivity relative to catalytic particles or nanoparticles; yet they are prone to aggregation and deactivation. The development of effective, stable, and commercially viable SACs is still a huge challenge. One of the remaining key obstacles is the ability to easily and effectively tune SACs-support interactions and coordination in a way that enables the production of robust, stable, and versatile SACs. Accordingly, the coordination and interactions between metallic supports and SACs and their impacts on SACs stability and activity are reviewed in this article.

Reduction of N2 to NH3 catalyzed by a Keggin-type polyoxometalate-supported dual-atom catalyst

In the present paper, a polyoxometalate-supported dual-atom catalyst has been designed for the nitrogen reduction reaction based on our density functional theory calculations.

Visualization of Transition Metal Decoration on h-BN Surface

Functional h-BN (hexagonal boron nitride) has been prepared via the incorporation of transition metal (TM) impurities like nanoparticles and single atoms. Herein, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with density functional theory (DFT) was employed to study Ta-, Co-, Ni-, and Ir-decorated h-BN monolayers to provide an overview of their preferential site occupancies and morphological evolutions on h-BN. Ta, Ni, Ir, and Co single atoms are all positioned on the nitrogen of h-BN; however DFT predicts the occupancy site can vary with their spin state. In terms of microstructural evolution, Co, Ni, and Ir atoms form 3D nanoclusters while Ta atoms are well dispersed and thus the single Ta atom can be decorated on h-BN. This study highlights on TM/h-BN interaction dynamics and presents an avenue for designing nanostructures for electrocatalytic application.

Chemistry, Functionalization, and Applications of Recent Monoelemental Two-Dimensional Materials and Their Heterostructures

The past decades have witnessed a rapid expansion in investigations of two-dimensional (2D) monoelemental materials (Xenes), which are promising materials in various fields, including applications in optoelectronic devices, biomedicine, catalysis, and energy storage. Apart from graphene and phosphorene, recently emerging 2D Xenes, specifically graphdiyne, borophene, arsenene, antimonene, bismuthene, and tellurene, have attracted considerable interest due to their unique optical, electrical, and catalytic properties, endowing them a broader range of intriguing applications. In this review, the structures and properties of these emerging Xenes are summarized based on theoretical and experimental results. The synthetic approaches for their fabrication, mainly bottom-up and top-down, are presented. Surface modification strategies are also shown. The wide applications of these emerging Xenes in nonlinear optical devices, optoelectronics, catalysis, biomedicine, and energy application are further discussed. Finally, this review concludes with an assessment of the current status, a description of existing scientific and application challenges, and a discussion of possible directions to advance this fertile field.

2D materials for bone therapy

Due to their prominent physicochemical properties, 2D materials are broadly applied in biomedicine. Currently, 2D materials have achieved great success in treating many diseases such as cancer and tissue engineering as well as bone therapy. Based on their different characteristics, 2D materials could function in various ways in different bone diseases. Herein, the application of 2D materials in bone tissue engineering, joint lubrication, infection of orthopedic implants, bone tumors, and osteoarthritis are firstly reviewed comprehensively together. Meanwhile, different mechanisms by which 2D materials function in each disease reviewed below are also reviewed in detail, which in turn reveals the versatile functions and application of 2D materials. At last, the outlook on how to further broaden applications of 2D materials in bone therapies based on their excellent properties is also discussed.

Atomic-Layer-Deposition-Based 2D Transition Metal Chalcogenides: Synthesis, Modulation, and Applications

Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are a large family of 2D materials with different properties, and are promising candidates for a wide range of applications such as nanoelectronics, sensors, energy conversion, and energy storage. In the research of new materials, the development and investigation of industry-compatible synthesis techniques is of key importance. In this respect, it is important to study 2D TMC materials synthesized by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, which is widely applied in industries. In addition to the synthesis of 2D TMCs, ALD is used to modulate the characteristic of 2D TMCs such as their carrier density and morphology. So far, the improvement of thin film uniformity without oxidation and the synthesis of low-dimensional nanomaterials on 2D TMCs have been the research focus. Herein, the synthesis and modulation of 2D TMCs by ALD is described, and the characteristics of ALD-based TMCs used in nanoelectronics, sensors, and energy applications are discussed.

TiO2 supported single Ag atoms nanozyme for elimination of SARS-CoV2

The outbreak of SARS-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) has become a global health emergency. Although enormous efforts have been made, there is still no effective treatment against the new virus. Herein, a TiO₂ supported single-atom nanozyme containing atomically dispersed Ag atoms (Ag-TiO₂ SAN) is designed to serve as a highly efficient antiviral nanomaterial. Compared with traditional nano-TiO₂ and Ag, Ag-TiO₂ SAN exhibits higher adsorption (99.65%) of SARS-CoV2 pseudovirus. This adsorption ability is due to the interaction between SAN and receptor binding domain (RBD) of spike 1 protein of SARS-CoV2. Theoretical calculation and experimental evidences indicate that the Ag atoms of SAN strongly bind to cysteine and asparagine, which are the most abundant amino acids on the surface of spike 1 RBD. After binding to the virus, the SAN/virus complex is typically phagocytosed by macrophages and colocalized with lysosomes. Interestingly, Ag-TiO₂ SAN possesses high peroxidase-like activity responsible for reactive oxygen species production under acid conditions. The highly acidic microenvironment of lysosomes could favor oxygen reduction reaction process to eliminate the virus. With hACE2 transgenic mice, Ag-TiO₂ SAN showed efficient anti-SARS-CoV2 pseudovirus activity. In conclusion, Ag-TiO₂ SAN is a promising nanomaterial to achieve effective antiviral effects for SARS-CoV2.

A Feasible Strategy for Identifying Single-Atom Catalysts Toward Electrochemical NO-to-NH3 Conversion

Combining NO removal and NH₃ synthesis, electrochemical NO reduction reaction (NORR) toward NH₃ is considered as a novel and attractive approach. However, exploring suitable catalysts for NO-to-NH₃ conversion is still a formidable task due to the lack of a feasible method. Herein, utilizing systematic first-principles calculations, a rational strategy for screening efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) for NO-to-NH₃ conversion is reported. This strategy runs the gamut of stability, NO adsorbability, NORR activity, and NH₃ selectivity. Taking transition metal atom embedded in C₂ N (TM-C₂ N) as an example, its validity is demonstrated and Zr-C₂ N is selected as a stable NO-adsorbable NORR catalyst with high NH₃ selectivity. Therefore, this work has established a theoretical landscape for screening SACs toward NO-to-NH₃ conversion, which will contribute to the application of SACs for NORR and other electrochemical reactions.

Overcoming barriers in photodynamic therapy harnessing nano-formulation strategies

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been extensively investigated for decades for tumor treatment because of its non-invasiveness, spatiotemporal selectivity, lower side-effects, and immune activation ability. It can be a promising treatment modality in several medical fields, including oncology, immunology, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, cardiology, pneumology, and dentistry. Nevertheless, the clinical application of PDT is largely restricted by the drawbacks of traditional photosensitizers, limited tissue penetrability of light, inefficient induction of tumor cell death, tumor resistance to the therapy, and the severe pain induced by the therapy. Recently, various photosensitizer formulations and therapy strategies have been developed to overcome these barriers. Significantly, the introduction of nanomaterials in PDT, as carriers or photosensitizers, may overcome the drawbacks of traditional photosensitizers. Based on this, nanocomposites excited by various light sources are applied in the PDT of deep-seated tumors. Modulation of cell death pathways with co-delivered reagents promotes PDT induced tumor cell death. Relief of tumor resistance to PDT with combined therapy strategies further promotes tumor inhibition. Also, the optimization of photosensitizer formulations and therapy procedures reduces pain in PDT. Here, a systematic summary of recent advances in the fabrication of photosensitizers and the design of therapy strategies to overcome barriers in PDT is presented. Several aspects important for the clinical application of PDT in cancer treatment are also discussed.

Synergistic photocatalytic activity of a combination of carbon nanotubes-graphene-nickel foam nanocomposites enhanced by dielectric barrier discharge plasma technology for water purification

Degradation activity of plasma catalysis between dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and carbon nanotubes-graphene-nickel foam (CNTs-G-Ni_f) has been studied in treatment of dye wastewater. CNTs-G-Ni_f was prepared through a two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. The composite has been characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. SEM results showed that the Ni_f as the growth substrate was evenly wrapped by G and then CNTs were successfully grown on G as the support. The growth mechanism of composite was proposed. The possible coupled catalytic mechanism between DBD and CNTs-G-Ni_f were addressed. In addition, the modification on G-Ni_f was found by SEM during the discharge process in liquid phase. And the modification mechanism of DBD plasma (DBDP) acting on composites was discussed. Finally, by means of analyses of ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), the general degradation pathway and stepwise degradation pathways of alizarin green (AG) were proposed in detail.

Biomimetic two-dimensional nanozymes: synthesis, hybridization, functional tailoring, and biosensor applications

Biological enzymes play important roles in mediating the biological reactions in vitro and in vivo due to their high catalytic activity, strong bioactivity, and high specificity; however, they have also some disadvantages such as high cost, low environmental stability, weak reusability, and difficult production. To overcome these shortcomings, functional nanomaterials including metallic nanoparticles, single atoms, metal oxides, alloys, and others have been utilized as nanozymes to mimic the properties and functions of natural enzymes. Due to the development of the synthesis and applications of two-dimensional (2D) materials, 2D nanomaterials have shown high potential to be used as novel nanozymes in biosensing, bioimaging, therapy, logic gates, and environmental remediation due to their unique physical, chemical, biological, and electronic properties. In this work, we summarize recent advances in the preparation and functionalization, as well as biosensor and immunoassay applications of various 2D material-based nanozymes. To achieve this aim, first we demonstrate the preparation strategies of 2D nanozymes such as chemical reduction, templated synthesis, chemical exfoliation, calcination, electrochemical deposition, hydrothermal synthesis, and many others. Meanwhile, the structure and properties of the 2D nanozymes prepared by conjugating 2D materials with nanoparticles, metal oxides, biomolecules, polymers, ions, and 2D heteromaterials are introduced and discussed in detail. Then, the applications of the prepared 2D nanozymes in colorimetric, electrochemical, fluorescent, and electrochemiluminescent sensors are demonstrated.

Efficient Reversible Conversion between MoS2 and Mo/Na2 S Enabled by Graphene-Supported Single Atom Catalysts

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) based on conversion-type metal sulfide (MS) anodes have attracted extraordinary attention due to relatively high capacity and intrinsic safety. The highly reversible conversion of M/Na₂ S to pristine MS in charge plays a vital role with regard to the electrochemical performance. Here, taking conventional MoS₂ as an example, guided by theoretical simulations, a catalyst of iron single atoms on nitrogen-doped graphene (SAFe@NG) is selected and first used as a substrate to facilitate the reaction kinetics of MoS₂ in the discharging process. In the following charging process, using a combination of spectroscopy and microscopy, it is demonstrated that the SAFe@NG catalyst enables an efficient reversible conversion reaction of Mo/Na₂ S→NaMoS₂ →MoS₂ . Moreover, theoretical simulations reveal that the reversible conversion mechanism shows favorable formation energy barrier and reaction kinetics, in which SAFe@NG with the Fe-N₄ coordination center facilitates the uniform dispersion of Na₂ S/Mo and the decomposition of Na₂ S and NaMoS₂ . Therefore, efficient reversible conversion reaction MoS₂ ↔NaMoS₂ ↔Mo/Na₂ S is enabled by the SAFe@NG catalyst. This work contributes new avenues for designing conversion-type materials with an efficient reversible mechanism.

Smart nano-micro platforms for ophthalmological applications: The state-of-the-art and future perspectives

Smart nano-micro platforms have been extensively applied for diverse biomedical applications, mostly focusing on cancer therapy. In comparison with conventional nanotechnology, the smart nano-micro matrix can exhibit specific response to exogenous or endogenous triggers, and thus can achieve multiple functions e.g. site-specific drug delivery, bio-imaging and detection of bio-molecules. These intriguing techniques have expanded into ophthalmology in recent years, yet few works have been summarized in this field. In this work, we provide the state-of-the-art of diverse nano-micro platforms based on both the conventional materials (e.g. natural or synthetic polymers, lipid nanomaterials, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles) and emerging nanomaterials (e.g. up-conversion nanoparticles, quantum dots and carbon materials) in ophthalmology, with some smart nano/micro platformers highlighted. The common ocular diseases studied in the field of nano-micro systems are firstly introduced, and their therapeutic method and the related drawback in clinic treatment are presented. The recent progress of different materials for diverse ocular applications is then demonstrated, with the representative nano- and micro-systems highlighted in detail. At last, an in-depth discussion on the clinical translation challenges faced in this field and the future direction are provided. This review would allow the researchers to design more smart nanomedicines in a more rational manner for specific ophthalmology applications.

Single-atom catalysis in advanced oxidation processes for environmental remediation

This review presents the recent advances in synthetic strategies, characterisation, and computations of carbon-based single-atom catalysts, as well as their innovative applications and mechanisms in advanced oxidation technologies.

Single-Atom Catalysts for Biotherapy Applications: A Systematic Review

Single-atom catalysts (SACs), as atomically dispersed metal active sites anchored or coordinated on suitable supports, demonstrate large potential for use in therapeutic applications. SACs have structural features similar to those of natural enzyme, while exhibiting remarkable catalytic activity, desirable stability, and excellent selectivity. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence on SACs' biotherapy applications. Three databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science, and ScienceDirect) were searched to identify the studies that investigated the therapeutic efficacy of SACs. A total of 12 studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included and reviewed, and the key findings were qualitatively synthesized. Overall, various SACs were investigated for biotherapy applications, including anticancer, anti-infection (antibacterial), and anti-inflammatory applications; brain trauma therapies, and oxidative-stress cytoprotection applications. All of the included studies showed that the synthesized SACs demonstrated superior therapeutic effects compared with their respective controls. Among the 12 studies reviewed, 11 studies showed satisfied biocompatibility of the applied SACs, whereas minimal cytotoxicity was reported in 1 study. Collectively, the reviewed studies indicated that SACs exhibited considerable promise in the field of biotherapy. Additional studies are needed for a better understanding of the effect of SACs in the treatment of various diseases.

Au-Decorated Ce-Ti Mixed Oxides for Efficient CO Preferential Photooxidation

We investigated the photocatalytic behavior of gold nanoparticles supported on CeO2-TiO2 nanostructured matrixes in the CO preferential oxidation in H2-rich stream (photo-CO-PROX), by modifying the electronic band structure of ceria through addition of titania and making it more suitable for interacting with free electrons excited in gold nanoparticles through surface plasmon resonance. CeO2 samples with different TiO2 concentrations (0-20 wt %) were prepared through a slow coprecipitation method in alkaline conditions. The synthetic route is surfactant-free and environmentally friendly. Au nanoparticles (<1.0 wt % loading) were deposited on the surface of the CeO2-TiO2 oxides by deposition-precipitation. A benchmarking sample was also considered, prepared by standard fast coprecipitation, to assess how a peculiar morphology can affect the photocatalytic behavior. The samples appeared organized in a hierarchical needle-like structure, with different morphologies depending on the Ti content and preparation method, with homogeneously distributed Au nanoparticles decorating the Ce-Ti mixed oxides. The morphology influences the preferential photooxidation of CO to CO2 in excess of H2 under simulated solar light irradiation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The Au/CeO2-TiO2 systems exhibit much higher activity compared to a benchmark sample with a non-organized structure. The most efficient sample exhibited CO conversions of 52.9 and 80.2%, and CO2 selectivities equal to 95.3 and 59.4%, in the dark and under simulated sunlight, respectively. A clear morphology-functionality correlation was found in our systematic analysis, with CO conversion maximized for a TiO2 content equal to 15 wt %. The outcomes of this study are significant advancements toward the development of an effective strategy for exploitation of hydrogen as a viable clean fuel in stationary, automotive, and portable power generators.

Emerging Multifunctional Single-Atom Catalysts/Nanozymes

Single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the metal active sites are isolated on the support and stabilized by coordinated atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc., represent the maximum usage efficiency of the metal atoms. Benefiting from the recent progress in synthetic strategies, characterization methods, and computational models, many SACs that deliver an impressive catalytic performance for a variety of reactions have been developed. The catalytic selectivity and activity are critical issues that need to be optimized and augmented in the areas of nanotechnology and biomedicine. This review summarizes some recent experimental and theoretical progress aimed at clarifying the structure of SACs and how they influence the catalytic performance. The examples described here elaborate on the utility of SACs and highlight the strengths of these catalysts in the applications of biomedicine, environmental protection, and energy conversion. Finally, some current challenges and future perspectives for SACs are also discussed.
