Revival of Zeolite-Templated Nanocarbon Materials: Recent Advances in Energy Storage and Conversion

Harnessing an amide-based covalent organic framework in solid-phase extraction for chlorophenol analysis in industrial wastewaters

An amide-based covalent organic framework (COF) was successfully synthesized using the reaction between 1,3,5-trimesoyl chloride and ethylenediamine. The structure and morphology of the COF were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. The COF was employed as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the sampling and preconcentration of chlorophenols from industrial wastewater samples prior to high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The experimental parameters influencing the extraction efficiency including type and volume of eluent solvent, sample solution volume, salt concentration, sample flow rate, and sample solution pH were investigated and optimized using a response surface methodology employing Box-Behnken-design. Under optimized conditions, calibration curves exhibited good linearities over the range of 0.003-10 µg/mL with determination coefficients (R2) ranging from 0.9982 to 0.9999. The method's limits of detection ranged from 0.001 to 0.01 µg/mL. Good repeatability was achieved with relative standard deviations below 4.7%. The developed procedure utilizing the COF adsorbent was successfully applied to determine chlorophenols accurately and precisely in various industrial wastewater samples.

The smallest Schwarzite carbon with only heptagonal carbon rings

Carbon materials with full sp2-hybridized buckling is a major challenge pervading fundamental nanoscience and nanotechnology research. Carbon atoms that are sp2 hybridized prefer to form hexagonal rings, such as in carbon nanotubes and graphene, which are low-dimensional materials. The incorporation of heptagonal, octagonal, and/or larger rings into a hexagonal sp2 carbon meshwork has been identified as a strategy for assembling three-dimensional (3D) sp2 carbon crystals, and one of the typical representatives are Schwarzite carbons, which possess a negative surface Gaussian curvature as well as unique physical properties. Herein, a 3D Schwarzite carbon consisting of only sp2-buckled heptagonal carbon rings, which is referred to as Hepta-carbon, is proposed based on first-principles calculations. Hepta-carbon is mechanically and thermodynamically stable, and energetically more favourable than experimental graphdiyne, fullerene C20 and most Schwarzite carbons under ambient conditions. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that Hepta-carbon exhibits high-temperature thermostability up to 1500 K. Band structure and mechanical property simulations indicate that Hepta-carbon is a semi-metallic material with electron conduction and exhibits impressive mechanical properties such as high strength with quasi-isotropy, high incompressibility similar to diamonds, elastic deformation behaviour under uniaxial stress, and high ductility. Hepta-carbon presents a porous network with a low mass density of 1.84 g cm-3 and connected channels with diameters of 3.3-6.1 Å. Theoretical simulations of gas adsorption energy demonstrate that Hepta-carbon can effectively adsorb and stabilize greenhouse gases, including N2O, CO2, CH4, and SF6.

Acetamiprid's degradation products and mechanism: Part II - Inert atmosphere and charge storage

Reuse and/or recycling of spent adsorbents is taking a central role in modern thinking and catalyzed carbonization is the way forward. Herein we explore the carbonization of adsorbed acetamiprid, in an inert atmosphere, as a way of recycling and producing nitrogen-rich carbon material for potential use in supercapacitors. Added value material and the reuse of the adsorbent were achieved by carbonization at 700 °C under argon. The formation of a nitrogen-doped carbon layer as an active material on the adsorbent, bonded through a C-Si linkage, has been conclusively verified through elemental composition quantification using XPS and EDX measurements. Two-stage catalytic decomposition and condensation of the adsorbed pesticide is followed by TGA and TPD-MS. Attained carbon-based materials give stable Faradaic capacitance with a slight dependency on the number of adsorbing cycles. Capacitance calculated with respect to the adlayer carbon material reaches values as high as 610 F g-1. Galvanostatic Charge/Discharge measurement confirmed the stability of explored materials with a slight increase in capacitance over 1000 cycles. The presented results envisage electroactive materials preparation from environmental pollutants, adding value to spent adsorbents.

Hydrothermal Liquefaction: How the Holistic Approach by Nature Will Help Solve the Environmental Conundrum

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) represents a beacon of scientific innovation, which unlocks nature's alchemical wonders while reshaping the waste-to-energy platform. This transformative technology offers sustainable solutions for converting a variety of waste materials to valuable energy products and chemicals-thus addressing environmental concerns, inefficiencies, and high costs associated with conventional waste-management practices. By operating under high temperature and pressure conditions, HTL efficiently reduces waste volume, mitigates harmful pollutant release, and extracts valuable energy from organic waste materials. This comprehensive review delves into the intricacies of the HTL process and explores its applications. Key process parameters, diverse feedstocks, various reactor designs, and recent advancements in HTL technology are thoroughly discussed. Diverse applications of HTL products are examined, and their economic viability toward integration in the market is assessed. Knowledge gaps and opportunities for further exploration are accordingly identified, with a focus on optimizing and scaling up the HTL process for commercial applications. In conclusion, HTL holds great promise as a sustainable technology for waste management, chemical synthesis, and energy production, thus making a significant contribution to a more sustainable future. Its potential to foster a circular economy and its versatility in producing valuable products underscore its transformative role in shaping a more sustainable world.

Chiral Polymer Dots Show Unexpected Versatility of Highly Ordered Self-Assembly into Chiroptical Liquid Crystals, Ultra-Thin Films, and Long-Ribbons

Compared to the organic counterparts, chiral self-assembly of nanomaterials shows persistency to kinetic factors such as solvent environments, and consequently, dynamic modulation of self-assembly and functions remains major challenge. Here, it is shown that alkylated, chiral polymer dots (c-PDs) give highly ordered self-assemblies with amplified chirality adaptive to solvent environments, and one-to-many hierarchical aggregation can be realized. The c-PDs tended to self-assemble into nanohelices with cubic packing in the solid state, which, thanks to the thermo-responsiveness, transformed into thermic liquid crystals upon heating. Cotton effects and circularly polarized luminescence evidenced the chirality transfer from central chirality to supramolecular chirality. At the air-water interface, the c-PDs are self-assembled into monolayers, which further stack into multiple layers with chirality transfer and highly ordered packing. In addition, undergoing a good/poor solvent exchange, the c-PDs afforded ultra-long microribbons up to a length scale of millimeters, which are constituted by the bilayer lamellar stacking. The versatile chiral self-assembly modalities with long-range ordered packing arrays of carbonized c-PDs via solvent strategy are realized. This feature is comparable to the organic species, although the c-PDs have no atomic precise structures. This work would surely expand the applications of quantum dot ordered self-assembly with adaptiveness to kinetic factors.

Three-Dimensional Electrochemical Sensors for Food Safety Applications

Considering the increasing concern for food safety, electrochemical methods for detecting specific ingredients in the food are currently the most efficient method due to their low cost, fast response signal, high sensitivity, and ease of use. The detection efficiency of electrochemical sensors is determined by the electrode materials' electrochemical characteristics. Among them, three-dimensional (3D) electrodes have unique advantages in electronic transfer, adsorption capacity and exposure of active sites for energy storage, novel materials, and electrochemical sensing. Therefore, this review begins by outlining the benefits and drawbacks of 3D electrodes compared to other materials before going into more detail about how 3D materials are synthesized. Next, different types of 3D electrodes are outlined together with common modification techniques for enhancing electrochemical performance. After this, a demonstration of 3D electrochemical sensors for food safety applications, such as detecting components, additives, emerging pollutants, and bacteria in food, was given. Finally, improvement measures and development directions of electrodes with 3D electrochemical sensors are discussed. We think that this review will help with the creation of new 3D electrodes and offer fresh perspectives on how to achieve extremely sensitive electrochemical detection in the area of food safety.

Photo-Cross-Linked Polymeric Dispersants of Comb-Shaped Benzophenone-Containing Poly(ether amine)

Efficient dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) is a crucial challenge in the preparation and application of composites that contain NPs, particularly in coatings, inks, and related materials. Physical adsorption and chemical modification are the two common methods used to disperse NPs. However, the former suffers from desorption, and the latter is more specific and has limited versatility. To address these issues, we developed a novel photo-cross-linked polymeric dispersant, comb-shaped benzophenone-containing poly(ether amine) (bPEA), using a one-pot nucleophilic/cyclic-opening addition reaction. The results demonstrated that the bPEA dispersant forms a dense and stable shell on the surface of pigment NPs through physical adsorption and subsequent chemical photo-cross-linking, which effectively overcome the drawbacks of the desorption occurred in physical adsorption and the specificity of the chemical modification. By means of the dispersing effect of bPEA, the obtained pigment dispersions show high solvent, thermal, and pH stability without flocculation during storage. Moreover, the NPs dispersants show good compatibility with screen printing, coating, and 3D printing, endowing the ornamental products with high uniformity, color fastness, and less color shading. These properties make bPEA dispersants ideal candidates in fabrication dispersions of other NPs.

Cobalt nanoparticles embedded into nitrogen-doped graphene with abundant macropores as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Nitrogen doped carbon materials containing transition metal nanoparticles have attracted much attention as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. In this paper, the template etching method is used to obtain the nitrogen-doped graphene with abundant macropores embedded with cobalt nanoparticles (Co@N-C). The prepared Co@NC-800 catalyst has a half-wave potential (E 1/2= 0.835V) close to Pt/C and good stability in excess of Pt/C for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). At the same time, the catalyst has good oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. In addition, zinc-air batteries (ZABs) based on the Co@NC-800 catalyst show good cycle stability of up to 200000 s and high power density of 73.5 mW cm -2 . The synergistic effect of the integrated component between nitrogen-doped graphene and cobalt nanoparticles as well as the macroporous structure endow Co@NC-800 with abundant exposed active sites and mass/electron transfer capacity, thus leading to the high electrocatalytic activity. This work shows potential for practical applications in electrochemistry.

Critical assessment of the performance of next-generation carbon-based adsorbents for CO2 capture focused on their structural properties

Carbon dioxide emissions and their sharply rising effect on global warming have encouraged research efforts to develop efficient technologies and materials for CO₂ capture. Post-combustion CO₂ capture by adsorption using solid materials is considered an attractive technology to achieve this goal. Templated materials, such as Zeolite Templated-Carbons and MOF-Derived Carbons, are considered as the next-generation carbon adsorbent materials, owing to their outstanding textural properties (high surface areas of ca. 4000 m² g^-1 and micropore volumes of ca. 1.7 cm³ g^-1) and their versatility for surface functionalization. These materials have demonstrated remarkable CO₂ adsorption capacities and CO₂/N₂ selectivities up to ca. 5 mmol g^-1 and 100, respectively, at 298 K and 1 bar, and low isosteric heat of adsorption at zero coverage of ca. 12 kJ mol^-1. Herein, a review of the advances in preparation of ZTCs and MDCs for CO₂ capture is presented, followed by a critical analysis of the effects of textural properties and surface functionality on CO₂ adsorption, including CO₂ uptake, CO₂/N₂ selectivity, and isosteric heat of adsorption. This analysis led to the introduction of a V_microx N-content factor to evaluate the interplay between N-content and textural properties to maximize the CO₂ uptake. Despite their promising performance in CO₂ uptake, further testing using mixtures and impurities, and studies on adsorbent regeneration, and cyclic operation are desirable to demonstrate the stability of the MDCs and ZTCs for large scale processes. In addition, advances in scale-up syntheses and their economics are needed.

From 1D to 3D Graphitic Carbon Nitride (Melon): A Bottom-Up Route via Crystalline Microporous Templates

Herein, we present a novel bottom-up preparation route for heptazine-based polymers (melon), also known as graphitic carbon nitride. The growth characteristics of isolated 1D melon strings in microporous templates are presented and studied in detail. Removal of the microporous silicate template via etching is accompanied by the self-assembly of a 1D melon to stacked 3D structures. The advantages and limitations of the bottom-up approach are shown by using microporous templates with different pore sizes (ETS-10, ZSM-5, and zeolite Y). In accordance with the molecular size of the heptazine units (0.67 nm), a 1D melon can be deposited in ETS-10 with a pore width of about 0.78 nm, whereas its formation in the smaller 0.47 nm pores of ZSM-5 is sterically impeded. The self-assembly of isolated 1D melon to stacked 3D structures offers a novel experimental perspective to the controversial debate on the polymerization degree in 2D sheets of graphitic carbon nitride as micropore sizes below 1 nm confine the condensation degree of heptazine to isolated 1D strands at a molecular level. The growth characteristics and structural features were investigated by X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, scanning transmission electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, 13C CP-NMR spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflection-infrared spectroscopy.

A carbon-based fluorescent probe (N-CDs) encapsulated in a zeolite matrix (NaFZ) for ultrasensitive detection of Hg (II) in fish

In this work, a novel strategy was addressed to fabricate new sensing probe (N-CDs@NaFZ) from nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) confined in Al-free ferrisilicates zeolite (NaFZ) by hydrothermal/solvothermal method. The probe was systematically characterized by HR-TEM, FTIR, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction, and UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectrophotometers. Characterization of the designed nanocomposite template N-CDs@NaFZ by fluorescence spectrum demonstrates a variety of important conducts as stability improvements, reasonable dispersibility in water, highly emission intensity enhancement at 435 nm when excited at 340 nm, excitation independent fluorescence behaviors, great quantum yield percentage of 91.2%, and narrow size distribution 12 nm, as a nano-space confinement effect of zeolite effectively increase the rigidity of N-CDs. Based on the fluorescence quenching mechanism, the designed approach exhibits an excellent selectivity and good sensitive response to the presence of Hg(II) ions under ambient temperature, with a wide linear range of 0.1-1500 nM and lower detection limits of 5.5 pM. Influences of variables pH and incubation time were optimized. The N-CDs@NaFZ sensor was effectively applied for the detection of Hg(II) ions in the farmed and wild rainbow trout fishes, and the results are in reasonable agreement when compared with that obtained by the cold vapor atomic absorption method.

The Role of Surface Curvature in Electrocatalysts

Excessive consumption of fossil fuels has caused unavoidable environmental problems. The development of renewable and clean alternatives is essential for the sustainable and green development of human society. Electrocatalysts are most important parts in these energy-related devices. Recently, scientists found that the surface curvature of electrocatalysts could play an important role for the improvement of catalytic performance and the optimization of intrinsic catalytic activity during electrocatalytic process. The role of surface curvature in electrocatalysts is still under investigating. In this minireview, we summarized the latest progress of electrocatalysts with different surface curvatures and their applications in energy-related applications. This review mainly involves the strategies for preparation of electrocatalysts with different surface curvatures, three typical electrocatalysts with different surface curvatures (curled surface, onion-like structure, and spiral structure), and the potential mechanisms that surface curvature in electrocatalysts affects activities.

Applications of Carbon Nanotubes in the Internet of Things Era

The post-Moore's era has boosted the progress in carbon nanotube-based transistors. Indeed, the 5G communication and cloud computing stimulate the research in applications of carbon nanotubes in electronic devices.
