Effective Phase-Alignment for 2D Halide Perovskites Incorporating Symmetric Diammonium Ion for Photovoltaics

Rational Strategies to Improve the Efficiency of 2D Perovskite Solar Cells

In the quest for durable photovoltaic devices, 2D halide perovskites have emerged as a focus of extensive research. However, the reduced dimension in structure is accompanied by inferior optical-electrical properties, such as widened band gap, enhanced exciton binding energy, and obstructed charge transport. As a result, the efficiency of 2D perovskite solar cells (PSCs) lags significantly behind their 3D counterparts. To overcome these constraints, extensive investigations into materials and processing techniques are pursued rigorously to augment the efficiency of 2D PSCs. Herein, The cutting-edge delve into developments in 2D PSCs, with a focus on chemical and material engineering, as well as their structure and photovoltaic properties. The review starts with an introduction of the crystal structure, followed by the key evaluation criteria of 2D PSCs. Then, the strategies around solution chemical engineering, processing technique, and interface optimization, to simultaneously boost efficiency and stability are systematically discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives associated with 2D perovskites to provide insights into potential improvements in photovoltaic performance will be outlined.

Manipulation of Crystal Orientation and Phase Distribution of Quasi-2D Perovskite through Synergistic Effect of Additive Doping and Spacer Engineering

The diammonium precursor 1,4-phenylenedimethanammonium (PDMA) was used as a large organic spacer for the preparation of Dion-Jacobson-type quasi-2D perovskites (PDMA)(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 (MA = methylammonium). Films with composition ⟨n⟩ = 5 comprised randomly orientated grains and multiple microstructural domains with locally differing n values. However, by mixing the Dion-Jacobson-type spacer PDMA and the Ruddlesden-Popper-type spacer propylammonium (PA), the crystal orientation in both the vertical and the horizonal directions became regulated. High crystallinity owing to well-matched interlayer distances was observed. Combining this spacer-engineering approach with the addition of methylammonium chloride (MACl) led to full vertical alignment of the crystal orientation. Moreover, the microstructural domains at the substrate interface changed from low-n (n = 1, 2, 3) to high-n (n = 4, 5), which may be beneficial for hole extraction at the interface between perovskite and hole transport layer due to a more finely tuned band alignment. Our work sheds light on manipulating the crystallization behavior of quasi-2D perovskite and further paves the way for highly stable and efficient perovskite devices.

Orbital Interactions in 2D Dion-Jacobson Perovskites Using Oligothiophene-Based Semiconductor Spacers Enable Efficient Solar Cells

2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites have emerged as promising photovoltaic materials, but the insulating organic spacer has hindered the efficient charge transport. Herein, we successfully synthesized a terthiophene-based semiconductor spacer, namely, 3ThDMA, for 2D DJ perovskite. An interesting finding is that the energy levels of 3ThDMA extensively overlap with the inorganic components and directly contribute to the band formation of (3ThDMA)PbI4, leading to enhanced charge transport across the organic spacer layers, whereas no such orbital interactions were found in (UDA)PbI4, a DJ perovskite based on 1,11-undecanediaminum (UDA). The devices based on (3ThDMA)MAn-1PbnI3n+1 (nominal n = 5) obtained a champion efficiency of 15.25%, which is a record efficiency for 2D DJ perovskite solar cells using long-conjugated spacers (conjugated rings ≥ 3) and a 22.60% efficiency for 3ThDMA-treated 3D PSCs. Our findings provide an important insight into understanding the orbital interactions in 2D DJ perovskite using an organic semiconductor spacer for efficient solar cells.

Highly efficient and stable quasi two-dimensional perovskite solar cells via synergistic effect of dual additives

Recently, quasi two-dimensional (Q-2D) perovskites with alternating cations in the interlayer space (ACI) have attracted more attentions owing to their elevated stability compared with three-dimensional (3D) analogs. While the efficiency of the devices derived from Q-2D perovskites is much smaller than that based on 3D perovskites. Here, we utilized urea and methoxyamine hydrochloride (MOAH) dual additives to acquire high quality Q-2D ACI perovskite GA(MA)₅Pb₅I₁₆ (GA = guanidinium, MA = methylammonium) films. The efficiency of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) derived from the Q-2D perovskite films induced by the synergistic effect of urea and MOAH dual additives increases to 20.32% from 17.21% for the devices without additive. This efficiency enhancement could be attributed to the enlarged grain size, improved crystallinity, optimized quantum well thickness distribution, and reduced trap states of the perovskite films. Moreover, the solar cells with dual additives present improved stability. The efficiency of devices with dual additives holds 95% of the original value after storage for 1600 h in ambient air. These results prove that the synergistic effect of urea and MOAH is an effective method to achieve highly efficient and stable Q-2D PSCs.

Combining π-Conjugation and Cation-π Interaction for Water-Stable and Photoconductive One-Dimensional Hybrid Lead Bromide

Hybrid lead halide perovskites and their derivatives are important optoelectronic materials but suffer from water instability. Combining both the optoelectronics and the water stability of such systems is a major challenge in material design today. To address this issue, we employ the well-known π-conjugation and cation-π interaction concepts in designing a hybrid lead halide perovskite derivative system. (4,4'-VDP)Pb₂Br₆ (VDP = vinylenedipyridinium) single crystals are prepared. They have a one-dimensional (1D) arrangement of inorganic Pb-Br sublattices connected via the 4,4'-VDP organic sublattice. The π-conjugation in the 4,4'-VDP sublattice allows electronic communication between the 1D Pb-Br units, reducing the band gap and improving the photoconductivity. Importantly, N⁺ of one 4,4'-VDP molecular ion interacts with the π-electron cloud of the adjacent one. This intermolecular cation-π interaction extends throughout the organic sublattice, making the hybrid crystal stable when stored under water for more than a year without requiring any encapsulations.

Unveiling the degraded electron durability in reduced-dimensional perovskites

The operational stability of reduced-dimensional metal halide perovskites (RD-MHPs) lags far behind the practical requirements for future high-definition displays. Thereinto, the electron durability of RD-MHPs plays a critical role in stable LEDs during continuous operation, however, it still lacks adequate research and a deep understanding. Herein, the electron durability and deterioration mechanism of phenethylammonium (PEA⁺)-modified RD-MHPs are systematically conducted through an in situ photoelectron spectroscopy technique by implementing tunable electron-beam radiation to simulate device operation. The formation of detrimental metallic lead (Pb⁰) caused by the reduction of lead ions (Pb²⁺) is observed along with the decomposition of PEA⁺ under electron-beam radiation, thereby changing the photophysical properties of PEA⁺-doped RD-MHPs. These results provide deep insight into the process of how injected electrons affect the performance of PEA⁺-doped perovskite LEDs, which may also provide potential guidance for designing robust and effective organic spacers for RD-MHPs.

Asymmetric Diammonium Directed In-Plane Charge Transport Enhancement in Two-Dimensional Lead Bromide Perovskite for Weak-Light Detection

Two-dimensional (2D) Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites are drawing significant attention in optoelectronic fields because of their enhanced out-of-plane electron coupling and improved structure stability. However, the structural effects of organic cations on the in-plane charge transport properties of 2D DJ lead bromide perovskites have remained less explored. Herein, we adopt asymmetric 3-(dimethylamino)-1-propylammonium (DMPD) and symmetric butane-1,4-diammonium (BDA) to systematically investigate the influence of organic cations on the structural, optical, and in-plane charge transport properties of 2D lead bromide perovskites. The large penetration depth of DMPD²⁺ induces a decreased perovskite layer distortion and a lower bandgap in DMPDPbBr₄, compared with that of BDAPbBr₄. Moreover, DMPDPbBr₄ is shown to possess a low exciton binding energy, a low defect density, and a low ion migration activation energy, thereby yielding a more efficient in-plane charge collection efficiency than BDAPbBr₄. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the improved in-plane charge transport can be traced to the enlarged antibonding coupling between Pb-6s and Br-4p orbitals that enables a high band dispersion and a low carrier effective mass in the in-plane direction of DMPDPbBr₄. Finally, the planar Ag/DMPDPbBr₄/Ag photodetector delivers a satisfying detectivity of 1.73 × 10¹² Jones under an incident power intensity of 0.16 mW cm^-2 and a high on/off ratio of 5.3 × 10³. The above findings offer novel insight for the design of 2D DJ lead bromide perovskites for optoelectronic devices.

Novel PHA Organic Spacer Increases Interlayer Interactions for High Efficiency in 2D Ruddlesden-Popper CsPbI3 Solar Cells

The two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) CsPbI₃ with hydrophobic organic spacers can significantly improve the environmental and phase stability of photovoltaic devices by suppressing ion migration and inducing steric hindrance. However, due to the multiple-quantum-well structure, these spacer cations lead to weak interactions in 2D RP CsPbI₃, which seriously affect the carrier transport. Here, a novel N-H-group-rich phenylhydrazine spacer, namely, PHA, was developed for 2D RP CsPbI₃ perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A series of characterizations confirm that the 2D perovskites using PHA spacers enhanced the N-H···I hydrogen-bonding interaction between the organic spacer cations and the [PbI₆]^4- inorganic layer and accelerated the crystallization rate of the perovskite film, which was beneficial to the preparation of high-quality films with preferred vertical orientation, large grain size, and dense morphology. Meanwhile, the trap state density of the as-prepared 2D RP perovskite films is significantly reduced to enable efficient charge carrier transport. As a result, the (PHA)₂Cs₄Pb₅I₁₆ PSCs achieved a performance of 16.23% with good environmental stability. This work provides a simple organic spacer selection scheme to realize interaction optimization in 2D RP CsPbI₃ to develop efficient and stable PSCs.

Roles of Organic Ligands in Ambient Stability of Layered Halide Perovskites

The combination of organic ligands and inorganic Pb-I frameworks in layered perovskites has bestowed upon them high structural tunability and stability, while their microscopic degradation mechanism remains unclear. Here, we found the key role of ligands in intrinsic structural stability and the consequent morphological evolution in layered perovskites during long-term ambient aging based on (GA)(MA)nPbnI3n+1 (GA = guanidinium, = 4) and (BDA)(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 (BDA = 1,4-butanediammonium, < n > = 4) perovskites. The BDA-based perovskites have a low intrinsic stability due to high crystal formation energy (ΔH), which are prone to hydration during ambient aging. We overserved changed crystal orientation from perpendicular to parallel, a delayed charge populating time from <1 ps to >50 ps, an inhibited carrier transfer kinetics between quantum wells, an increase of 0.9 μs of charge carrier transport time and a decrease of 1.2 μs of charge carrier lifetime in the BDA-based film during ambient aging, which accounts for a large power-conversion efficiency (PCE) loss (14.2% vs 11.2%). By contrast, the GA ligand increases the intrinsic structural stability of perovskites, which not only yields an initial PCE as high as 20.0% but also helps retain excellent optoelectronic properties during aging. Therefore, only a slight PCE loss (20.0% vs 19.1%) was observed. Our work reveals the key role of organic-inorganic interaction affecting the intrinsic structural stability and optoelectronic properties, and provides a theoretical basis for the future design of stable and efficient optoelectronic devices.

Beyond the Phase Segregation: Probing the Irreversible Phase Reconstruction of Mixed-Halide Perovskites

Mixed-halide perovskites can undergo a photoinduced phase segregation. Even though many reports have claimed that such a phase segregation process is reversible, what happens after phase segregation and its impact on the performance of perovskite-based devices are still open questions. Here, the phase transformation of MAPb(I_{1- x} Br_x )₃ after phase segregation and probe an irreversible phase reconstruction of MAPbBr₃ is investigated. The photoluminescence imaging microscopy technique is introduced to in situ record the whole process. It is proposed that the type-I band alignment of segregated I-rich and Br-rich domains can enhance the emission of the I-rich domains by suppressing the nonradiative recombination channels. At the same time, the charge injection from Br-rich to I-rich domains drives the expulsion of iodide from the lattice, and thus triggers the reconstruction of MAPbBr₃ . The work highlights the significance of ion movements in mixed-halide perovskites and provides new perspectives to understand the property evolution.

Layered 2D Halide Perovskites beyond Ruddlesden-Popper Phase: Tailored Interlayer Chemistries for High-Performance Solar Cells

Layered halide perovskites (LHPs) with crystallographically 2D structures have gained increasing interest for photovoltaic applications due to their superior chemical stability and intriguing anisotropic properties, as compared to their conventional 3D perovskite counterparts. The mostly studied LHPs are Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases, which suffer from a carrier-transport bottleneck due to the van der Waals gap associated with their intrinsic organic interlayer structures. To address this issue, Dion-Jacobson (DJ) and alternating-cation-interlayer (ACI) LHPs have rapidly emerged, which exhibit unique structural and (opto)electronic characteristics that may resemble the 3D counterparts owing to the eliminated or reduced van der Waals gap. Improved photophyiscal properties have been achieved in DJ and ACI LHPs, leading towards better photovoltaic performance. Here we provide a comprehensive discussion on the merits and promise of DJ and ACI LHPs from a chemistry perspective. Then, we review recent progress on synthesis and tailoring of DJ and ACI LHP crystals and thin films, as well as their optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance. Finally, we discuss future directions to realize the full potential of DJ and ACI LHPs for high-performance solar cells and beyond.
