Propagation Control of Octahedral Tilt in SrRuO3 via Artificial Heterostructuring

Real-time dynamics of angular momentum transfer from spin to acoustic chiral phonon in oxide heterostructures

Chiral phonons have recently been explored as a novel degree of freedom in quantum materials. The angular momentum carried by these quasiparticles is generated by the breaking of chiral degeneracy of phonons, owing to the chiral lattice structure or the rotational motion of ions of the material. In ferromagnets, a mechanism for generating non-equilibrium chiral phonons has been suggested, but their temporal evolution, which obeys Bose-Einstein statistics, remains unclear. Here we report the real-time dynamics of thermalized chiral phonons in an artificial superlattice composed of ferromagnetic metallic SrRuO3 and non-magnetic insulating SrTiO3. Following the photo-induced ultrafast demagnetization in the SrRuO3 layer, we observed the appearance of a magneto-optic signal in the superlattice, which is absent in the SrRuO3 single films. This magneto-optic signal exhibits thermally driven dynamic properties and a clear correlation with the thickness of the non-magnetic SrTiO3 layer, implying that it originates from thermalized chiral phonons. We use numerical calculations considering the magneto-elastic coupling in SrRuO3 to validate our experimental observations and the angular momentum transfer mechanism between the lattice and spin systems in ferromagnetic systems and also to the non-magnetic system.

Dimensionality Engineering of Magnetic Anisotropy from the Anomalous Hall Effect in Synthetic SrRuO3 Crystals

Magnetic anisotropy in atomically thin correlated heterostructures is essential for exploring quantum magnetic phases for next-generation spintronics. Whereas previous studies have mostly focused on van der Waals systems, here we investigate the impact of dimensionality of epitaxially grown correlated oxides down to the monolayer limit on structural, magnetic, and orbital anisotropies. By designing oxide superlattices with a correlated ferromagnetic SrRuO3 and nonmagnetic SrTiO3 layers, we observed modulated ferromagnetic behavior with the change of the SrRuO3 thickness. Especially, for three-unit-cell-thick layers, we observe a significant 1500% improvement of the coercive field in the anomalous Hall effect, which cannot be solely attributed to the dimensional crossover in ferromagnetism. The atomic-scale heterostructures further reveal the systematic modulation of anisotropy for the lattice structure and orbital hybridization, explaining the enhanced magnetic anisotropy. Our findings provide valuable insights into engineering the anisotropic hybridization of synthetic magnetic crystals, offering a tunable spin order for various applications.

Exotic Magnetic Anisotropy Near Digitized Dimensional Mott Boundary

The magnetic anisotropy of low-dimensional Mott systems exhibits unexpected magnetotransport behavior useful for spin-based quantum electronics. Yet, the anisotropy of natural materials is inherently determined by the crystal structure, highly limiting its engineering. The magnetic anisotropy modulation near a digitized dimensional Mott boundary in artificial superlattices composed of a correlated magnetic monolayer SrRuO3 and nonmagnetic SrTiO3 , is demonstrated. The magnetic anisotropy is initially engineered by modulating the interlayer coupling strength between the magnetic monolayers. Interestingly, when the interlayer coupling strength is maximized, a nearly degenerate state is realized, in which the anisotropic magnetotransport is strongly influenced by both the thermal and magnetic energy scales. The results offer a new digitized control for magnetic anisotropy in low-dimensional Mott systems, inspiring promising integration of Mottronics and spintronics.

Giant Enhancement of Electron-Phonon Coupling in Dimensionality-Controlled SrRuO3 Heterostructures

Electrons in crystals interact closely with quantized lattice degree of freedom, determining fundamental electrodynamic behaviors and versatile correlated functionalities. However, the strength of the electron-phonon interaction is so far determined as an intrinsic value of a given material, restricting the development of potential electronic and phononic applications employing the tunable coupling strength. Here, it is demonstrated that the electron-phonon coupling in SrRuO₃ can be largely controlled by multiple intuitive tuning knobs available in synthetic crystals. The coupling strength of quasi-2D SrRuO₃ is enhanced by ≈300-fold compared with that of bulk SrRuO₃ . This enormous enhancement is attributed to the non-local nature of the electron-phonon coupling within the well-defined synthetic atomic network, which becomes dominant in the limit of the 2D electronic state. These results provide valuable opportunities for engineering the electron-phonon coupling, leading to a deeper understanding of the strongly coupled charge and lattice dynamics in quantum materials.

Dislocation-tuned ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism of the BiFeO3/SrRuO3 interface

Misfit dislocations at a heteroepitaxial interface produce huge strain and, thus, have a significant impact on the properties of the interface. Here, we use scanning transmission electron microscopy to demonstrate a quantitative unit-cell-by-unit-cell mapping of the lattice parameters and octahedral rotations around misfit dislocations at the BiFeO3/SrRuO3 interface. We find that huge strain field is achieved near dislocations, i.e., above 5% within the first three unit cells of the core, which is typically larger than that achieved from the regular epitaxy thin-film approach, thus significantly altering the magnitude and direction of the local ferroelectric dipole in BiFeO3 and magnetic moments in SrRuO3 near the interface. The strain field and, thus, the structural distortion can be further tuned by the dislocation type. Our atomic-scale study helps us to understand the effects of dislocations in this ferroelectricity/ferromagnetism heterostructure. Such defect engineering allows us to tune the local ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order parameters and the interface electromagnetic coupling, providing new opportunities to design nanosized electronic and spintronic devices.

Atomic-Scale Modulation of Synthetic Magnetic Order in Oxide Superlattices

Atomic-scale precision control of magnetic interactions facilitates a synthetic spin order useful for spintronics, including advanced memory and quantum logic devices. Conventional modulation of synthetic spin order has been limited to metallic heterostructures that exploit Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction through a nonmagnetic metallic spacer; however, they face issues arising from Joule heating and/or electric breakdown. The practical realization and observation of a synthetic spin order across a nonmagnetic insulating spacer will lead to the development of spin-related devices with a completely different concept. Herein, the atomic-scale modulation of the synthetic spiral spin order in oxide superlattices composed of ferromagnetic metal and nonmagnetic insulator layers is reported. The atomically controlled superlattice exhibits an oscillatory magnetic behavior, representing the existence of a spiral spin structure. Depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry evidences modulated spiral spin structures as a function of the nonmagnetic insulator layer thickness. Atomic-scale customization of the spin state can move the field one step further to actual spintronic applications.

Atomically engineered cobaltite layers for robust ferromagnetism

Emergent phenomena at heterointerfaces are directly associated with the bonding geometry of adjacent layers. Effective control of accessible parameters, such as the bond length and bonding angles, offers an elegant method to tailor competing energies of the electronic and magnetic ground states. In this study, we construct unit-thick syntactic layers of cobaltites within a strongly tilted octahedral matrix via atomically precise synthesis. The octahedral tilt patterns of adjacent layers propagate into cobaltites, leading to a continuation of octahedral tilting while maintaining substantial misfit tensile strain. These effects induce severe rumpling within an atomic plane of neighboring layers, further triggering the electronic reconstruction between the splitting orbitals. First-principles calculations reveal that the cobalt ions transit to a higher spin state level upon octahedral tilting, resulting in robust ferromagnetism in ultrathin cobaltites. This work demonstrates a design methodology for fine-tuning the lattice and spin degrees of freedom in correlated quantum heterostructures by exploiting epitaxial geometric engineering.

Strain Modified Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance in Epitaxial, Freestanding, and Van Der Waals Manganite Thin Films

In perovskite complex oxides, the strain has been established as a promising approach for tuning the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance by the manipulated electronic structure and interaction/coupling. In this study, we have employed rigid epitaxial, flexible freestanding, and van der Waals La_2/3Sr_1/3MnO₃ (LSMO) to investigate the strain effects on OER, which are different in stress strength and range via lattice mismatch and curvature change. It was found that the OER performances as a function of strain exhibited volcano and monotonous trends in rigid and flexible LSMO, respectively. The findings suggest that distinguished oxygen activation energy in varied lattice fields also plays a crucial role in the epitaxial LSMO in contrast to the pure strain effect in the flexible LSMO. Our results not only fundamentally clarify the effort of strain but also technologically provide an effective route to engineer the electronic structure for modified OER performance by perovskite complex oxides.

Colossal Room-Temperature Ferroelectric Polarizations in SrTiO3/SrRuO3 Superlattices Induced by Oxygen Vacancies

Artificial superlattices have demonstrated many unique phenomena not found in bulk materials. For this investigation, SrTiO₃/SrRuO₃ paraelectric/metallic superlattices with various stacking periods were synthesized via pulsed laser deposition. A robust room-temperature ferroelectric polarization (∼46 μC/cm²) was found in the superlattices with 2 unit cell (u.c.) thick SrRuO₃ layers, despite the fact that neither SrTiO₃ nor SrRuO₃ is inherently ferroelectric. Results obtained from atomically resolved elemental mapping and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy verified that oxygen vacancies accumulated at the SrTiO₃/SrRuO₃ interfaces, causing lattice distortions and increased tetragonality (c/a). The observed ferroelectric responses can be mainly attributed to the broken spatial inversion symmetry induced by the ordered distribution of oxygen vacancies at the SrTiO₃/SrRuO₃ interfaces, coupled with the triggering of external electric field. The resulting polarization mechanism induced by oxygen vacancies suggests viable ways for improving the electrical properties of ferroelectric materials, with the goal of expanding the functionality of a range of electronic devices.

Atomistic Engineering of Phonons in Functional Oxide Heterostructures

Engineering of phonons, that is, collective lattice vibrations in crystals, is essential for manipulating physical properties of materials such as thermal transport, electron-phonon interaction, confinement of lattice vibration, and optical polarization. Most approaches to phonon-engineering have been largely limited to the high-quality heterostructures of III-V compound semiconductors. Yet, artificial engineering of phonons in a variety of materials with functional properties, such as complex oxides, will yield unprecedented applications of coherent tunable phonons in future quantum acoustic devices. In this study, artificial engineering of phonons in the atomic-scale SrRuO₃ /SrTiO₃ superlattices is demonstrated, wherein tunable phonon modes are observed via confocal Raman spectroscopy. In particular, the coherent superlattices led to the backfolding of acoustic phonon dispersion, resulting in zone-folded acoustic phonons in the THz frequency domain. The frequencies can be largely tuned from 1 to 2 THz via atomic-scale precision thickness control. In addition, a polar optical phonon originating from the local inversion symmetry breaking in the artificial oxide superlattices is observed, exhibiting emergent functionality. The approach of atomic-scale heterostructuring of complex oxides will vastly expand material systems for quantum acoustic devices, especially with the viability of functionality integration.

Ferroelectric Proximity Effect and Topological Hall Effect in SrRuO3/BiFeO3 Multilayers

Interfaces between complex oxides provide a unique opportunity to discover novel interfacial physics and functionalities. Here, we fabricate the multilayers of itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO₃ (SRO) and multiferroic BiFeO₃ (BFO) with atomically sharp interfaces. Atomically resolved transmission electron microscopy reveals that a large ionic displacement in BFO can penetrate into SRO layers near the BFO/SRO interfaces to a depth of 2-3 unit cells, indicating the ferroelectric proximity effect. A topological Hall effect is indicated by hump-like anomalies in the Hall measurements of the multilayer with a moderate thickness of the SRO layer. With magnetic measurements, it can be further confirmed that each SRO layer in the multilayers can be divided into interfacial and middle regions, which possess different magnetic ground states. Our work highlights the key role of functional heterointerfaces in exotic properties and provides an important guideline to design spintronic devices based on magnetic skyrmions.

Unconventional interlayer exchange coupling via chiral phonons in synthetic magnetic oxide heterostructures

Chiral symmetry breaking of phonons plays an essential role in emergent quantum phenomena owing to its strong coupling to spin degree of freedom. However, direct experimental evidence of the chiral phonon-spin coupling is lacking. In this study, we report a chiral phonon-mediated interlayer exchange interaction in atomically controlled ferromagnetic metal (SrRuO₃)-nonmagnetic insulator (SrTiO₃) heterostructures. Owing to the unconventional interlayer exchange interaction, we have observed rotation of spins as a function of nonmagnetic insulating spacer thickness, resulting in a spin spiral state. The chiral phonon-spin coupling is further confirmed by phonon Zeeman effect. The existence of the chiral phonons and their interplay with spins along with our atomic-scale heterostructure approach unveil the crucial roles of chiral phonons in magnetic materials.

Dimensional Control of Octahedral Tilt in SrRuO3 via Infinite-Layered Oxides

Manipulation of octahedral distortion at atomic scale is an effective means to tune the ground states of functional oxides. Previous work demonstrates that strain and film thickness are variable parameters to modify the octahedral parameters. However, selective control of bonding geometry by structural propagation from adjacent layers is rarely studied. Here we propose a new route to tune the ferromagnetism in SrRuO₃ (SRO) ultrathin layers by oxygen coordination of adjacent SrCuO₂ (SCO) layers. The infinite-layered CuO₂ exhibits a structural transformation from "planar-type" to "chain-type" with reduced film thickness. Two orientations dramatically modify the polyhedral connectivity at the interface, thus altering the octahedral distortion of SRO. The local structural variation changes the spin state of Ru and orbital hybridization strength, leading to a significant change in the magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall resistivity. These findings could launch investigations into adaptive control of functionalities in quantum oxide heterostructures using oxygen coordination.
