Supramolecular Gel-Derived Highly Efficient Bifunctional Catalysts for Omnidirectionally Stretchable Zn-Air Batteries with Extreme Environmental Adaptability

Enhancement of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction by Introducing Lanthanum Species in the Carbon Shell

The development of cost-effective non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) opens up the possibility for sustainable energy systems. Herein, we report a surface overcoating strategy with lanthanum organic complex (La-OC) as the precursor to prepare lanthanum species (La-SPc) encapsulated in nitrogen, fluorine, and sulfur self-doped porous carbon (NFS-PC) composites (La-SPc@NFS-PC) for efficient ORR and OER. The La-SPc is introduced not only as a promoter to increase the electrochemical stability of the La-SPc@NFS-PC catalysts but also to tailor the electronic structure of NFS-PC due to the unique electrochemical properties of La-SPc. In addition, the integration of La-SPc and NFS-PC can improve the electronic conductivity of composites by inducing electron redistribution and lowering the band gap, which is advantageous in enhancing the kinetics of charge transfer. Simultaneously, benefiting from the optimized porous structure and positive cooperation of La-SPc with NFS-PC shells, the obtained La-SPc@NFS-PC-3 delivers robust bifunctional ORR/OER activities and stabilities. More importantly, the Zn-air battery (ZAB) assembled with La-SPc@NFS-PC-3 demonstrates an outstanding power density (181.1 mW cm-2) and long cycling life, outperforming the commercial Pt/C. This work offers a rational approach to preparing high-efficiency rare-earth-based catalysts and provides potential applications in ZABs.

Sustainable zinc-air battery chemistry: advances, challenges and prospects

Sustainable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are considered promising energy storage devices owing to their inherent safety, high energy density, wide operating temperature window, environmental friendliness, etc., showing great prospect for future large-scale applications. Thus, tremendous efforts have been devoted to addressing the critical challenges associated with sustainable ZABs, aiming to significantly improve their energy efficiency and prolong their operation lifespan. The growing interest in sustainable ZABs requires in-depth research on oxygen electrocatalysts, electrolytes, and Zn anodes, which have not been systematically reviewed to date. In this review, the fundamentals of ZABs, oxygen electrocatalysts for air cathodes, physicochemical properties of ZAB electrolytes, and issues and strategies for the stabilization of Zn anodes are systematically summarized from the perspective of fundamental characteristics and design principles. Meanwhile, significant advances in the in situ/operando characterization of ZABs are highlighted to provide insights into the reaction mechanism and dynamic evolution of the electrolyte|electrode interface. Finally, several critical thoughts and perspectives are provided regarding the challenges and opportunities for sustainable ZABs. Therefore, this review provides a thorough understanding of the advanced sustainable ZAB chemistry, hoping that this timely and comprehensive review can shed light on the upcoming research horizons of this prosperous area.

Programmable supramolecular chirality in non-equilibrium systems affording a multistate chiroptical switch

The dynamic regulation of supramolecular chirality in non-equilibrium systems can provide valuable insights into molecular self-assembly in living systems. Herein, we demonstrate the use of chemical fuels for regulating self-assembly pathway, which thereby controls the supramolecular chirality of assembly in non-equilibrium systems. Depending on the nature of different fuel acids, the system shows pathway-dependent non-equilibrium self-assembly, resulting in either dynamic self-assembly with transient supramolecular chirality or kinetically trapped self-assembly with inverse supramolecular chirality. More importantly, successive conducting of chemical-fueled process and thermal annealing process allows for the sequential programmability of the supramolecular chirality between four different chiral hydrogels, affording a new example of a multistate supramolecular chiroptical switch that can be recycled multiple times. The current finding sheds new light on the design of future supramolecular chiral materials, offering access to alternative self-assembly pathways and kinetically controlled non-equilibrium states.

A Full-Device Autonomous Self-Healing Stretchable Soft Battery from Self-Bonded Eutectogels

Next-generation energy storage devices should be soft, stretchable, and self-healable. Previously reported self-healable batteries mostly possess limited stretchability and rely on healable electrodes or electrolytes rather than achieving full-device self-healability. Herein, an all-component self-bonding strategy is reported to obtain an all-eutectogel soft battery (AESB) that simultaneously achieves full-cell autonomous self-healability and omnidirectional intrinsic stretchability (>1000% areal strain) over a broad temperature range (-20~60 °C). Without requiring any external stimulus, the five-layered soft battery can efficiently recover both its mechanical and electrochemical performance at full-cell level. The developed AESB can be easily configured into various 3D architectures with highly interfacial compatible eutectogel electrodes, electrolyte, and substrate, presenting an excellent opportunity for the development of embodied energy technologies. The present work provides a general and user-friendly soft electronic material platform for fabricating a variety of intrinsic self-healing stretchable multi-layered electronics, which are promising beyond the field of energy storage, such as displays, sensors, circuits, and soft robots.

Copper Collector Generated Cu+/Cu2+ Redox Pair for Enhanced Efficiency and Lifetime of Zn-Ni/Air Hybrid Battery

Although Zn-Ni/air hybrid batteries exhibit improved energy efficiency, power density, and stability compared with Zn-air batteries, they still cannot satisfy the high requirements of commercialization. Herein, the Cu⁺/Cu²⁺ redox pair generated from a copper collector has been introduced to construct the hybrid battery system by combining Zn-air and Zn-Cu/Zn-Ni, in which Cu_XO@NiFe-LDH and Co-N-C dodecahedrons are respectively adopted as oxygen evolution (OER) and oxygen reduction (ORR) electrodes. For fabricating Cu_XO@NiFe-LDH, the Cu foam collector is oxidized to in situ form 1D Cu_XO nanoneedle arrays, which could generate the Cu⁺/Cu²⁺ redox pair to enhance battery efficiency by providing an extra charging-discharging voltage plateau to reduce the charging voltage and increase the discharge voltage. Then, the 2D NiFe hydrotalcite nanosheets grow on the nanoneedle arrays to obtain 3D interdigital structures, facilitating the intimate contact of the ORR/OER electrode and electrolyte by providing a multichannel structure. Thus, the battery system could endow a high energy efficiency (79.6% at 10 mA cm^-2), an outstanding energy density (940 Wh kg^-1), and an ultralong lifetime (500 h). Significantly, it could stably operate under harsh environments, such as oxygen-free and any humidity. In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses demonstrate the reversible process of Cu-O-Cu ↔ Cu-O and Ni-O ↔ Ni-O-O-H during the charging/discharging, which are responsible for the enhanced efficiency and lifetime of battery.

Supramolecular Polymer Intertwined Free-Standing Bifunctional Membrane Catalysts for All-Temperature Flexible Zn-Air Batteries

Rational construction of flexible free-standing electrocatalysts featuring long-lasting durability, high efficiency, and wide temperature tolerance under harsh practical operations are fundamentally significant for commercial zinc-air batteries. Here, 3D flexible free-standing bifunctional membrane electrocatalysts composed of covalently cross-linked supramolecular polymer networks with nitrogen-deficient carbon nitride nanotubes are fabricated (referred to as PEMAC@NDCN) by a facile self-templated approach. PEMAC@NDCN demonstrates the lowest reversible oxygen bifunctional activity of 0.61 V with exceptional long-lasting durability, which outperforms those of commercial Pt/C and RuO₂. Theoretical calculations and control experiments reveal the boosted electron transfer, electrolyte mass/ion transports, and abundant active surface site preferences. Moreover, the constructed alkaline Zn-air battery with PEMAC@NDCN air-cathode reveals superb power density, capacity, and discharge-charge cycling stability (over 2160 cycles) compared to the reference Pt/C + RuO₂. Solid-state Zn-air batteries enable a high power density of 211 mW cm^-2, energy density of 1056 Wh kg^-1, stable charge-discharge cycling of 2580 cycles for 50 mA cm^-2, and wide temperature tolerance from - 40 to 70 °C with retention of 86% capacity compared to room-temperature counterparts, illustrating prospects over harsh operations.
