Advanced Composites Inspired by Biological Structures and Functions in Nature: Architecture Design, Strengthening Mechanisms, and Mechanical-Functional Responses

A Bioinspired Design of Protective Al2O3/Polyurethane Hierarchical Composite Film Through Layer-By-Layer Deposition

Structural materials such as ceramics, metals, and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) are frequently threatened by large compressive and impact forces. Energy absorption layers, i.e., polyurethane and silicone foams with excellent damping properties, are applied on the surfaces of different substrates to absorb energy. However, the amount of energy dissipation and penetration resistance are limited in commercial polyurethane foams. Herein, a distinctive nacre-like architecture design strategy is proposed by integrating hard porous ceramic frameworks and flexible polyurethane buffers to improve energy absorption and impact resistance. Experimental investigations reveal the bioinspired designs exhibit optimized hardness, strength, and modulus compared to that of polyurethane. Due to the multiscale energy dissipation mechanisms, the resulting normalized absorbed energy (≈8.557 MJ m-3) is ≈20 times higher than polyurethane foams under 50% quasi-static compression. The bioinspired composites provide superior protection for structural materials (CFRP, glass, and steel), surpassing polyurethane films under impact loadings. It is shown CFRP coated with the designed materials can withstand more than ten impact loadings (in energy of 10 J) without obvious damage, which otherwise delaminates after a single impact. This biomimetic design strategy holds the potential to offer valuable insights for the development of lightweight, energy-absorbent, and impact-resistant materials.

Additive Manufacturing Provides Infinite Possibilities for Self-Sensing Technology

Integrating sensors and other functional parts in one device can enable a new generation of integrated intelligent devices that can perform self-sensing and monitoring autonomously. Applications include buildings that detect and repair damage, robots that monitor conditions and perform real-time correction and reconstruction, aircraft capable of real-time perception of the internal and external environment, and medical devices and prosthetics with a realistic sense of touch. Although integrating sensors and other functional parts into self-sensing intelligent devices has become increasingly common, additive manufacturing has only been marginally explored. This review focuses on additive manufacturing integrated design, printing equipment, and printable materials and stuctures. The importance of the material, structure, and function of integrated manufacturing are highlighted. The study summarizes current challenges to be addressed and provides suggestions for future development directions.

Text-to-Microstructure Generation Using Generative Deep Learning

Designing novel materials is greatly dependent on understanding the design principles, physical mechanisms, and modeling methods of material microstructures, requiring experienced designers with expertise and several rounds of trial and error. Although recent advances in deep generative networks have enabled the inverse design of material microstructures, most studies involve property-conditional generation and focus on a specific type of structure, resulting in limited generation diversity and poor human-computer interaction. In this study, a pioneering text-to-microstructure deep generative network (Txt2Microstruct-Net) is proposed that enables the generation of 3D material microstructures directly from text prompts without additional optimization procedures. The Txt2Microstruct-Net model is trained on a large microstructure-caption paired dataset that is extensible using the algorithms provided. Moreover, the model is sufficiently flexible to generate different geometric representations, such as voxels and point clouds. The model's performance is also demonstrated in the inverse design of material microstructures and metamaterials. It has promising potential for interactive microstructure design when associated with large language models and could be a user-friendly tool for material design and discovery.

Programmable and Shape-Color Synchronous Dual-Response Wood with Thermal Stimulus

Stimuli-responsive materials exhibit huge potential in sensors, actuators, and electronics; however, their further development for reinforcement, visualization, and biomass-incorporation remains challenging. Herein, based on the impregnation of thermochromic microcapsule (TCM)-doped dynamic covalent vitrimers, a programmable shape-color dual-responsive wood (SRW-TC) was demonstrated with robust anisotropic structures and exchangeable covalent adaptable networks. Under mild conditions, the resultant SRW-TC displays feasible shape memorability and programmability, resulting from the rigidity-flexibility shift induced by the glass-transition temperature (34.99 °C) and transesterification reaction triggered by the topology freezing transition temperature (149.62 °C). Furthermore, the obtained SRW-TC possesses satisfactory mechanical performance (tensile strength of 45.70 MPa), thermal insulation (thermal conductivity of 0.27 W/m K), anisotropic light management, and benign optical properties (transmittance of 51.73% and haze of 99.67% at 800 nm). Importantly, the incorporation of compatible TCM enables SRW-TC to visualize shape memory feasibility and rigidity/flexibility switching and respond to the external thermal stimulus through the thermal-induced shape-color synchronous dual-responsiveness, which successfully demonstrates the applications of sensing temperature, grasping objects, encrypting/decoding icon messages, and so on. The proposed facile and highly effective strategy could serve as a guideline for developing high-performance multifunctional wood composite with promising intelligent applications in performance visualization, environmental sensing, materials interactivity, information dual-encryption, local precision shape and color regulation, etc.

Bionic Design and Optimization on the Flow Channel of a Legged Robot Joint Hydraulic Drive Unit Based on Additive Manufacturing

The joint hydraulic drive unit (HDU) serves as a pivotal element in enabling the high-performance movements of legged robots. Functioning as the conduit linking the oil source and the actuator, the hydraulic flow channel significantly impacts actuator performance. Hence, optimizing the HDU flow channel becomes imperative, enhancing not only HDU efficiency but also the overall system performance. This paper introduces a novel approach by aligning the hydraulic flow channel of the joint HDU with the arteriovenous layout of the cardiac vascular system, departing from the conventional machining flow channel model. Through simulations determining the optimal range of the vascular branch radius and angle, this study guides the design optimization of the joint HDU flow channel. With the primary optimization goal of reducing pressure loss, the study compares simulation outcomes of various flow channel models-linear, variable excessive radius, and the multidimensional Bessel curve-tailored to suit the arrangement specifics of the joint HDU. Further validating these designs, the flow channels are fabricated using additive manufacturing for experimental verification. The integration of simulation analyses and pressure loss testing reveals a remarkable reduction of over 40% in pressure loss for the bionic flow channel compared to the conventional machining form. This empirical evidence strongly substantiates the bionic flow channel's superior efficacy in pressure loss reduction. The findings presented herein offer valuable insights for the development of low-loss flow channels in joint HDUs, thereby presenting a new avenue for designing energy-efficient, high power-to-weight ratio legged robots.

Three-Dimensional Printing of Multifunctional Composites: Fabrication, Applications, and Biodegradability Assessment

Additive manufacturing, with its wide range of printable materials, and ability to minimize material usage, reduce labor costs, and minimize waste, has sparked a growing enthusiasm among researchers for the production of advanced multifunctional composites. This review evaluates recent reports on polymer composites used in 3D printing, and their printing techniques, with special emphasis on composites containing different types of additives (inorganic and biomass-derived) that support the structure of the prints. Possible applications for additive 3D printing have also been identified. The biodegradation potential of polymeric biocomposites was analyzed and possible pathways for testing in different environments (aqueous, soil, and compost) were identified, including different methods for evaluating the degree of degradation of samples. Guidelines for future research to ensure environmental safety were also identified.

Research Progress in Preparation, Properties and Applications of Biomimetic Organic-Inorganic Composites with "Brick-and-Mortar" Structure

Inspired by nature, materials scientists have been exploring and designing various biomimetic materials. Among them, composite materials with brick-and-mortar-like structure synthesized from organic and inorganic materials (BMOIs) have attracted increasing attention from scholars. These materials have the advantages of high strength, excellent flame retardancy, and good designability, which can meet the requirements of various fields for materials and have extremely high research value. Despite the increasing interest in and applications of this type of structural material, there is still a dearth of comprehensive reviews, leaving the scientific community with a limited understanding of its properties and applications. In this paper, we review the preparation, interface interaction, and research progress of BMOIs, and propose possible future development directions for this class of materials.
