Bifunctional Cellulose Interlayer Enabled Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells with Simultaneously Enhanced Efficiency and Stability

Cellulose-based thermoelectric composites: A review on mechanism, strategies and applications

The ever-increasing demand for energy and environmental concerns have driven scientists to look for renewable and eco-friendly alternatives. Bio-based thermoelectric (TE) composite materials provide a promising solution to alleviate the global energy crisis due to their direct conversion of heat to electricity. Cellulose, the most abundant bio-polymer on earth with fascinating structure and desirable physicochemical properties, provides an excellent alternative matrix for TE materials. Here, recent studies on cellulose-based TE composites are comprehensively summarized. The fundamentals of TE materials, including TE effects, TE devices, and evaluation on conversion efficiency of TE materials are briefly introduced at the beginning. Then, the state-of-the-art methods for constructing cellulose-based TE composites in the forms of paper/film, aerogel, liquid, and hydrogel, are highlighted. TE performances of these composites are also compared. Following that, applications of cellulose-based TE composites in the fields of energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors) and sensing (e.g., self-powered sensors) are presented. Finally, opportunities and challenges that need investigation toward further development of cellulose-based TE composites are discussed.

Fluorinated Polyimide Tunneling Layer for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Photovoltaics

Despite the remarkable progress of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), challenges remain in terms of finding effective and viable strategies to enhance their long-term stability while maintaining high efficiency. In this study, a new insulating and hydrophobic fluorinated polyimide (FPI: 6FDA-6FAPB) was used as the interface layer between the perovskite layer and the hole transport layer (HTL) in PSCs. The functional groups of FPI play a pivotal role in passivating interface defects within the device. Due to its high work function, FPI demonstrates field-effect passivation (FEP) capabilities as an interface layer, effectively mitigating non-radiative recombination at the interface. Notably, the FPI insulating interface layer does not impede carrier transmission at the interface, which is attributed to the presence of hole tunneling effects. The optimized PSCs achieve an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.61 % and demonstrate excellent stability, showcasing the efficacy of FPI in enhancing device performance and reliability.

A review of cellulose-based catechol-containing functional materials for advanced applications

With the increment in global energy consumption and severe environmental pollution, it is urgently needed to explore green and sustainable materials. Inspired by nature, catechol groups in mussel adhesion proteins have been successively understood and utilized as novel biomimetic materials. In parallel, cellulose presents a wide class of functional materials rating from macro-scale to nano-scale components. The cross-over among both research fields alters the introduction of impressive materials with potential engineering properties, where catechol-containing materials supply a general stage for the functionalization of cellulose or cellulose derivatives. In this review, the role of catechol groups in the modification of cellulose and cellulose derivatives is discussed. A broad variety of advanced applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials, including adhesives, hydrogels, aerogels, membranes, textiles, pulp and papermaking, composites, are presented. Furthermore, some critical remaining challenges and opportunities are studied to mount the way toward the rational purpose and applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials.

Manipulating Crystal Growth and Secondary Phase PbI2 to Enable Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells with Natural Additives

In perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the inherent defects of perovskite film and the random distribution of excess lead iodide (PbI2) prevent the improvement of efficiency and stability. Herein, natural cellulose is used as the raw material to design a series of cellulose derivatives for perovskite crystallization engineering. The cationic cellulose derivative C-Im-CN with cyano-imidazolium (Im-CN) cation and chloride anion prominently promotes the crystallization process, grain growth, and directional orientation of perovskite. Meanwhile, excess PbI2 is transferred to the surface of perovskite grains or formed plate-like crystallites in local domains. These effects result in suppressing defect formation, decreasing grain boundaries, enhancing carrier extraction, inhibiting non-radiative recombination, and dramatically prolonging carrier lifetimes. Thus, the PSCs exhibit a high power conversion efficiency of 24.71%. Moreover, C-Im-CN has multiple interaction sites and polymer skeleton, so the unencapsulated PSCs maintain above 91.3% of their initial efficiencies after 3000 h of continuous operation in a conventional air atmosphere and have good stability under high humidity conditions. The utilization of biopolymers with excellent structure-designability to manage the perovskite opens a state-of-the-art avenue for manufacturing and improving PSCs.

Recent advances in TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers: Oxidation mechanism, characterization, properties and applications

Cellulose is the richest renewable polymer source on the earth. TEMPO-mediated oxidized cellulose nanofibers are deduced from enormously available wood biomass and functionalized with carboxyl groups. The preparation procedure of TOCNFs is more environmentally friendly compared to other cellulose, for example, MFC and CNCs. Due to the presence of functional carboxyl groups, TOCNF-based materials have been studied widely in different fields, including biomedicine, wastewater treatment, bioelectronics and others. In this review, the TEMPO oxidation mechanism, the properties and applications of TOCNFs are elaborated. Most importantly, the recent advanced applications and the beneficial role of TOCNFs in the various abovementioned fields are discussed. Furthermore, the performances and research progress on the fabrication of TOCNFs are summarized. It is expected that this timely review will help further research on the invention of novel material from TOCNFs and its applications in different advanced fields, including biomedicine, bioelectronics, wastewater treatment, and the energy sector.

Development of Biocompatible Mussel-Inspired Cellulose-Based Underwater Adhesives

Conventional adhesives have poor underwater adhesion and harm to human health and the environment during their use, which largely limits their practical applications. Herein, we synthesized cellulose-based adhesives with underwater adhesion and biocompatibility by grafting N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl)methacrylamide into the cellulose chain via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). FTIR, 1H NMR, and XPS analyses ensured the successful preparation of the cellulose-based adhesive polymers. The different properties of the prepared adhesives, including swelling ratio, adhesion strength, and biocompatibility are examined. Results found that the lap shear strength is enhanced by increasing the catechol content. When catechol content is 27.2 mol %, cellulose-based adhesive with the addition of Fe3+ possesses a strong lap shear strength of 2.13 MPa in a dry environment, 0.10 MPa underwater, and 0.16 MPa under seawater for iron substrate, respectively. In addition, the cell culture test demonstrated that the prepared adhesives have outstanding biocompatibility. The cellulose-based adhesives with underwater adhesion and biocompatibility have potential applications in biomedicine, electronic engineering, and construction fields.

Synergistic Defect Passivation and Crystallization Modulation in Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells: The Case of Multifunctional 2-Anisidine-4-Sulfonic Acid

With the continuous development of the performance of perovskite solar cells, the high-density defects on the perovskite film surface and grain boundaries as well as undesired perovskite crystallization are increasingly emerging as challenges to their commercial application. Herein, a dye intermediate 2-anisidine-4-sulfonic acid (2A4SA), containing sulfonic acid group (SO3-), amino group (-NH2), methoxy group (CH3O-), and benzene ring, which exhibit a synergistic effect in comprehensive defect passivation and crystallization modulation, is incorporated. Detailed investigations show that the SO3- of 2A4SA with high electronegativity firmly chelates with uncoordinated lead ions through the coordination interaction, while the -NH2 and the CH3O- of 2A4SA separately immobilize iodide ions and organic cations in the perovskite lattice through hydrogen bonds, enabling substantially decreased nonradiative recombination and trap state density. Meanwhile, 2A4SA molecules attached to the surface of perovskite nuclei can delay crystallization kinetics and promote preferred vertical growth orientation, thereby attaining the high-crystallinity and large-size-grain perovskite films. Consequently, the 2A4SA-doped device with the structure ITO/SnO2/Cs0.15FA0.75MA0.10PbI3 (2A4SA)/Spiro-OMeTAD/Ag presents a splendid power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.06% accompanied by increased open-circuit voltage (1.15 V) and fill factor (82.17%). Furthermore, the optimized film and device demonstrate enhanced long-term stability. The unencapsulated optimized device retains ≈80% of the original PCE after 1000 h upon exposure to ambient atmosphere (20-50% RH), whereas the control group is only 56.8%.

Global trends and hot topics in clinical applications of perovskite materials: a bibliometric analysis

In recent years, perovskite has received increasing attention in the medical field. However, there has been a lack of related bibliometric analysis in this research field. This study aims to analyse the research status and hot topics of perovskite in the medical field from a bibliometric perspective and explore the research direction of perovskite. This study collected 1852 records of perovskite research in the medical field from 1983 to 2022 in the Web of Science (WOS) database. The country, institution, journal, cited references, and keywords were analysed using CiteSpace, VOS viewer, and Bibliometrix software. The number of articles related to perovskite research in the medical field has been increasing every year. China and USA have published the most papers and are the main forces in this research field. The University of London Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine is the most active institution and has contributed the most publications. ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces is the most prolific journal in this field. "Medical electronic devices", "X-rays", and "piezoelectric materials" are the most researched directions of perovskite in the medical field. "Performance", "perovskite", and "solar cells" are the most frequently used keywords in this field. Advanced Materials is the most relevant and academically influential journal for perovskite research. Halide perovskites have been a hot topic in this field in recent years and will be a future research trend. X-ray, electronic medical equipment, and medical stents are the main research directions.
