3D Porous Oxygen-Doped and Nitrogen-Doped Graphitic Carbons Derived from Metal Azolate Frameworks as Cathode and Anode Materials for High-Performance Dual-Carbon Sodium-Ion Hybrid Capacitors

Vacancy-Defect Ternary Topological Insulators Bi2Se2Te Encapsulated in Mesoporous Carbon Spheres for High Performance Sodium Ion Batteries and Hybrid Capacitors

Ternary topological insulators have attracted worldwide attention because of their broad application prospects in fields such as magnetism, optics, electronics, and quantum computing. However, their potential and electrochemical mechanisms in sodium ion batteries (SIBs) and hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) have not been fully studied. Herein, a composite material comprising vacancy-defects ternary topological insulator Bi2Se2Te encapsulated in mesoporous carbon spheres (Bi2Se2Te@C) is designed. Bi2Se2Te with ample vacancy-defects has a wide interlayer spacing to enable frequent insertion/extraction of Na+ and boost reaction kinetics within the electrode. Meanwhile, the Bi2Se2Te@C with optimized yolk-shell structure can buffer the volume variation without breaking the outer protective carbon shell, ensuring structural stability and integrity. As expected, the Bi2Se2Te@C electrode delivers high reversible capacity and excellent rate capability in half SIB cells. Various electrochemical analyses and theoretical calculations manifest that Bi2Se2Te@C anode confirms the synergistic effect of ternary chalcogenide systems and suitable void space yolk-shell structure. Consequently, the full cells of SIB and SIHC coupled with Bi2Se2Te@C anode exhibit good performance and high energy/power density, indicating its widespread practical applications. This design is expected to offer a reliable strategy for further exploring advanced topological insulators in Na+-based storage systems.

Coal-derived boron and phosphorus co-doped activated carbon with expanded interlayer space for high performance sodium ion capacitor anode

Aiming at the key problem of Na+ insertion difficulty and low charge transfer efficiency of activated carbon materials. It is an effective strategy to increase the lattice spacing and defect concentration by doping to reduce the ion diffusion resistance and improve the kinetics. Hence, anthracitic coal is used to prepare activated carbon (AC) and B,P-doped activated carbon (B,P-AC) as the cathode and anode materials for high-performance all-carbon SICs, respectively. AC cathode material has high specific surface area and reasonable micropore structure, which shows excellent capacitance performance. B,P-AC anode material has the advantages of extremely high specific surface area (1856.1 m2/g), expanded interlayer spacing (0.40 nm) and uniform distribution of B and P heteroatoms. Hence, B,P-AC anode achieves a highly reversible Na+ storage capacity of 243 mAh/g at a current density of 0.05 A/g. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verify that B,P-AC has stronger Na+ storage performance. The final assembled B,P-AC//AC SIC offers a high energy density of 109.78 Wh kg-1 and a high-power density of 10.03 kW kg-1. The high-performance coal-derived activated carbon of this work provides a variety of options for industrial production of electrode materials for sodium ion capacitors.

NH4 + Pre-Intercalation and Mo Doping VS2 to Regulate Nanostructure and Electronic Properties for High Efficiency Sodium Storage

Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) have attracted much attention due to integrating the high energy density of battery and high out power of supercapacitors. However, rapid Na+ diffusion kinetics in cathode is counterbalanced with sluggish anode, hindering the further advancement and commercialization of SIHCs. Here, aiming at conversion-type metal sulfide anode, taking typical VS2 as an example, a comprehensive regulation of nanostructure and electronic properties through NH4 + pre-intercalation and Mo-doping VS2 (Mo-NVS2) is reported. It is demonstrated that NH4 + pre-intercalation can enlarge the interplanar spacing and Mo-doping can induce interlayer defects and sulfur vacancies that are favorable to construct new ion transport channels, thus resulting in significantly enhanced Na+ diffusion kinetics and pseudocapacitance. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the introduction of NH4 + and Mo-doping enhances the electronic conductivity, lowers the diffusion energy barrier of Na+, and produces stronger d-p hybridization to promote conversion kinetics of Na+ intercalation intermediates. Consequently, Mo-NVS2 delivers a record-high reversible capacity of 453 mAh g-1 at 3 A g-1 and an ultra-stable cycle life of over 20 000 cycles. The assembled SIHCs achieve impressive energy density/power density of 98 Wh kg-1/11.84 kW kg-1, ultralong cycling life of over 15000 cycles, and very low self-discharge rate (0.84 mV h-1).

Gradient Pores Enhance Charge Storage Density of Carbonaceous Cathodes for Zn-Ion Capacitor

Engineering carbonaceous cathode materials with adequately accessible active sites is crucial for unleashing their charge storage potential. Herein, activated meso-microporous shell carbon (MMSC-A) nanofibers are constructed to enhance the zinc ion storage density by forming a gradient-pore structure. A dominating pore size of 0.86 nm is tailored to cater for the solvated [Zn(H2 O)6 ]2+ . Moreover, these gradient porous nanofibers feature rapid ion/electron dual conduction pathways and offer abundant active surfaces with high affinity to electrolyte. When employed in Zn-ion capacitors (ZICs), the electrode delivers significantly enhanced capacity (257 mAh g-1 ), energy density (200 Wh kg-1 at 78 W kg-1 ), and cyclic stability (95% retention after 10 000 cycles) compared to nonactivated carbon nanofibers electrode. A series of in situ characterization techniques unveil that the improved Zn2+ storage capability stems from size compatibility between the pores and [Zn(H2 O)6 ]2+ , the co-adsorption of Zn2+ , H+ , and SO4 2- , as well as reversible surface chemical interaction. This work presents an effective method to engineering meso-microporous carbon materials toward high energy-density storage, and also offers insights into the Zn2+ storage mechanism in such gradient-pore structures.

Hierarchically Structured Nb2O5 Microflowers with Enhanced Capacity and Fast-Charging Capability for Flexible Planar Sodium Ion Micro-Supercapacitors

Hierarchically structured Nb2O5 microflowers consiste of porous and ultrathin nanosheets. Nb2O5 microflowers exhibit enhanced capacity and rate performance boosting Na ion storage. Planar NIMSCs with charge and kinetics matching show superior areal capacitance and lifespan.

Abstract

Planar Na ion micro-supercapacitors (NIMSCs) that offer both high energy density and power density are deemed to a promising class of miniaturized power sources for wearable and portable microelectronics. Nevertheless, the development of NIMSCs are hugely impeded by the low capacity and sluggish Na ion kinetics in the negative electrode. Herein, we demonstrate a novel carbon-coated Nb2O5 microflower with a hierarchical structure composed of vertically intercrossed and porous nanosheets, boosting Na ion storage performance. The unique structural merits, including uniform carbon coating, ultrathin nanosheets and abundant pores, endow the Nb2O5 microflower with highly reversible Na ion storage capacity of 245 mAh g−1 at 0.25 C and excellent rate capability. Benefiting from high capacity and fast charging of Nb2O5 microflower, the planar NIMSCs consisted of Nb2O5 negative electrode and activated carbon positive electrode deliver high areal energy density of 60.7 μWh cm−2, considerable voltage window of 3.5 V and extraordinary cyclability. Therefore, this work exploits a structural design strategy towards electrode materials for application in NIMSCs, holding great promise for flexible microelectronics.

Kinetically well-matched porous framework dual carbon electrodes for high-performance sodium-ion hybrid capacitors

Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) have attracted extensive interest due to their applications in sodium-ion batteries and capacitors, which have been considered expectable candidates for large-scale energy storage systems. The crucial issues for achieving high-performance SIHCs are the reaction kinetics imbalances between the slow Faradic battery-type anodes and fast non-Faradaic capacitive cathodes. Herein, we propose a simple self-template strategy to prepare kinetically well-matched porous framework dual-carbon electrodes for high-performance SIHCs, which stem from the single precursor, sodium ascorbate. The porous framework carbon (PFC) is obtained by direct calcination of sodium ascorbate followed by a washing process. The sodium-ion half cells with PFC anodes exhibit high reversible capacity and fast electrochemical kinetics for sodium storage. Moreover, the as-obtained PFC can be further converted to porous framework activated carbon (PFAC) with rich porosity and a high specific surface area, which displays high capacitive properties. By using kinetically well-matched battery-type PFC anodes and capacitive PFAC cathodes, dual-carbon SIHCs are successfully assembled, which can work well in 0-4 V. The optimal PFC//PFAC SIHC exhibits high energy density (101.6 Wh kg-1 at 200 W kg-1), power density (20 kW kg-1 at 51.1 Wh kg-1), and cyclic performance (71.8 % capacitance attenuation over 10,000 cycles).
