Synthesis of Conjugated Mesoporous Hyper-cross-linked Polymers for Efficient Capture of Dibenzothiophene and Iodine

Porous organic polymers have recently received great attention because of their promising applications in the removal of thiophene compounds in liquid fuels and for the nuclear waste (such as radioactive iodine isotopes) treatments. Herein, a series of conjugated mesoporous hyper-cross-linked polymers (CMHPs) were prepared through our newly developed silicon-promoted cationic polymerization in a straightforward manner. The CMHPs exhibited extended π-conjugation, intrinsic porosity, high surface area, and excellent physicochemical stability. They showed an outstanding dibenzothiophene uptake capacity of ∼1335 mg g^-1, which far exceeded many reported porous organic polymers. Meanwhile, these CMHPs showed high adsorption capacity for iodine vapor. Altogether, the CMHPs prepared by the facile and metal-free cationic reactions have great potential in adsorption of harmful substances and environmental protection.

Excellent adsorption performance of dibenzothiophene on functionalized low-cost activated carbons with different oxidation methods

Low-cost activated carbon (KAC) was functionalized by HNO₃, (NH₄)₂S₂O₈ and air oxidation, respectively, to remove dibenzothiophene (DBT) from model fuel. The changes in physical and chemical properties of these activated carbons were characterized by thermal analysis, elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption apparatus, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscope and Boehm's titration method. HNO₃ and (NH₄)₂S₂O₈ oxidation result in a significant decrease in pore structure, while air oxidation only causes slight pore reduction due to the re-activation by O₂. The oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs) increase markedly after oxidative modification, in which (NH₄)₂S₂O₈ oxidation is considered as the most efficient method with respect to the introduction of OFGs. HNO₃ and (NH₄)₂S₂O₈ oxidation are more selective to generate carboxyls and lactones, whereas air oxidation creates more phenols, carbonyls and ethers. The DBT adsorption capacity follows the order: NAC (HNO₃-oxidized KAC) > OAC (air-oxidized KAC) > KAC > SAC ((NH₄)₂S₂O₈-oxidized KAC), implying the introduction of OFGs is beneficial for the DBT adsorption process, especially for selectivity, but excessive OFGs have a negative effect on the removal of DBT. Thus, to achieve high DBT adsorption performance, there should be a trade-off between the micropore volume and the OFGs amount.

Catalyst, Emulsion Stabilizer, and Adsorbent: Three Roles In One for Synergistically Enhancing Interfacial Catalytic Oxidative Desulfurization

A Pickering emulsion catalytic system was proposed to reduce the transfer limitation between two immiscible reactant phases for enhancing the kinetics of heterogenetic oxidative desulfurization (ODS). By loading phosphotungstic acid (HPW) nanoparticles on a novel pyridine-based porous organic polymer of P[tVPB-VP _x], the amphiphilic catalysts were produced and used as the stabilizer for Pickering emulsions. Specifically, an ultrafast ODS rate was realized in the HPW/P[tVPB-VP₁]-stabilized Pickering emulsion catalytic system, and just within 15 min, 100 ppm dibenzothiophene (DBT) was completely oxidized by H₂O₂. Because the obtained hierarchical porous HPW/P[tVPB-VP _x] catalysts showed both high adsorption capacity of DBT and excellent catalytic ODS performance, the catalysts assembling at the interface of emulsions provided this fastest reaction dynamics. Playing three roles of catalyst, emulsion stabilizer, and adsorbent, the synergistic functional catalytic emulsions can be a promising approach to significantly boost the heterogeneous catalytic ODS performance.

Understanding the desulphurization process in an ionic porous aromatic framework

An ionic porous aromatic framework, iPAF-1, was successfully synthesized from a designed monomer with imidazolium functional groups. The iPAF-1 exhibits the highest dibenzothiophene uptake among all reported adsorptive desulphurization adsorbents. The so-called precursor designed synthetic route provides the stoichiometric and homogeneous introduction of desired functional groups into the framework. Molecular dynamics simulation was performed to understand the structure and the desulphurization process within the amorphous iPAF-1. The insight into the key role of the moderate bonding interaction between the adsorbate and the functional groups of iPAF-1 for improved uptake is highlighted in this work.

Selective Adsorption and Separation of Xylene Isomers and Benzene/Cyclohexane with Microporous Organic Polymers POP-1

The separation of chemical substances with analogous chemical structures and physical properties remains a great challenge. In this work, triptycene-like microporous organic polymers (MOPs), POP-1, was synthesized via choosing 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DMB) and triptycene as external cross-linkers and building blocks, respectively, and POP-1 was employed to separate xylene isomers and benzene (Bz)/cyclohexane (Cy). Results show that POP-1 has a higher uptake for m-xylene (0.29 g/g) and Bz (1.02 g/g); more intriguingly, their complete separation can be realized within 0.6 min using a column packed with POP-1. The interaction between POP-1 networks and adsorbates was also investigated using theoretical (density functional theory together with noncovalent interaction analysis) and experimental (inverse gas chromatography) approaches. Especially, both results present a good agreement, that is, weak interactions such as CH/π interactions play a dominant role in defining the separation performance of POP-1 for xylene isomers and Bz/Cy mixtures. Our findings suggest that MOPs may open up a new route for separating the chemicals that are similar in structure and size.

Nut-like MOF/hydroxylated graphene hybrid materials for adsorptive desulfurization of thiophene

Nowadays, sulfur compounds in fuel oils are the main source of environmental pollution and ultra-deep desulfurization of fuel oils has become a top priority. Many porous materials such as activated carbon and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention in the field of adsorption desulfurization in recent years. A series of novel MOF/hydroxylated graphene hybrid materials were successfully designed and synthesized with different ratios for application in the field of ADS. The hydroxylated graphene (HG) was found dispersed not just on the surface but also inserted in the MOF crystals in what we call a nut-like structure. It was found that the introduction of a small amount (<8%) of HG does not hinder the formation of the Cu-BTC structure. Meanwhile, the adsorption performances of these composites for thiophene from oils were evaluated using batch adsorption tests at room temperature. The synergistic effect between Cu-BTC and HG in the hybrid materials can improve the adsorption capacity for thiophene molecules. The experimental equilibrium curve fitted well with the theoretical Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum sulfur adsorption capacity of 35.6 mg S g-1 for the hybrid materials was calculated using the Langmuir adsorption equation, which increased by 48% compared to parent Cu-BTC. Thus, these hybrid materials have great potential for application in the adsorptive desulfurization process, especially for thiophenic compounds.

Hypercrosslinked porous polymer materials: design, synthesis, and applications

Hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) are a series of permanent microporous polymer materials initially reported by Davankov, and have received an increasing level of research interest. In recent years, HCPs have experienced rapid growth due to their remarkable advantages such as diverse synthetic methods, easy functionalization, high surface area, low cost reagents and mild operating conditions. Judicious selection of monomers, appropriate length crosslinkers and optimized reaction conditions yielded a well-developed polymer framework with an adjusted porous topology. Post fabrication of the as developed network facilitates the incorporation of various chemical functionalities that may lead to interesting properties and enhance the selection toward a specific application. To date, numerous HCPs have been prepared by post-crosslinking polystyrene-based precursors, one-step self-polycondensation or external crosslinking strategies. The advent of these methodologies has prompted researchers to construct well-defined porous polymer networks with customized micromorphology and functionalities. In this review, we describe not only the basic synthetic principles and strategies of HCPs, but also the advancements in the structural and morphological study as well as the frontiers of potential applications in energy and environmental fields such as gas storage, carbon capture, removal of pollutants, molecular separation, catalysis, drug delivery, sensing etc.

Porous, Hyper-cross-linked, Three-Dimensional Polymer as Stable, High Rate Capability Electrode for Lithium-Ion Battery

Organic materials containing active carbonyl groups have attracted considerable attention as electrodes in Li-ion batteries due to their reversible redox activity, ability to retain capacity, and, in addition, their ecofriendly nature. Introduction of porosity will help accommodate as well as store small ions and molecules reversibly. In the present work, we introduce a mesoporous triptycene-related, rigid network polymer with high specific surface area as an electrode material for rechargeable Li-ion battery. The designed polymer with a three-dimensional (3D), rigid porous network allows free movement of ions/electrolyte as well as helps in interacting with the active anhydride moieties (containing two carbonyl groups). Considerable intake of Li⁺ ions giving rise to very high specific capacity of 1100 mA h g^-1 at a discharge current of 50 mA g^-1 and ∼120 mA h g^-1 at a high discharge current of 3 A g^-1 are observed with excellent cyclability up to 1000 cycles. This remarkable rate capability, which is one of the highest among the reported organic porous polymers to date, makes the triptycene-related rigid 3D network a very good choice for Li-ion batteries and opens up a new method to design polymer-based electrode materials for metal-ion battery technology.
