Polyethyleneimine-grafted membranes for simultaneously adsorbing heavy metal ions and rejecting suspended particles in wastewater

Preparation of amino functionalized magnetic oyster shell powder adsorbent for selective removal of anionic dyes and Pb (II) from wastewater

A kind of new magnetic oyster shell (OS) composite (OS-Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@PEI) was synthesized and used as an adsorbent to remove carmine (CM), sunset yellow (SY) and Pb (II) from water. Firstly, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were introduced on the surface of waste oyster shell powder, then amino silanization was used to improve the stability of the material, and finally polyethylenimide (PEI) was grafted by Schiff base reaction. The composite was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, EDS, XPS, VSM, BET, TEM and zeta potential. The effects of adsorbent dosage and initial solution pH on the three samples were investigated by adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated in depth under the best experimental conditions. The composite adsorbent not only selectively removed anionic azo dyes, but also had good recycling. In addition, OS-Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@PEI still had good performance in mixed samples. These results indicated that OS-Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@PEI was successfully used for the removal of a wide range of anionic dyes and heavy metal ions from the environment, and provided a new strategy for recycling waste.

Insights into the Superstable Mineralization of Chromium(III) from Wastewater by CuO

The removal of Cr^III ions from contaminated wastewater is of great urgency from both environmental protection and resource utilization perspectives. Herein, we developed a superstable mineralization method to immobilize Cr³⁺ ions from wastewater using CuO as a stabilizer, leading to the formation of a CuCr layered double hydroxide (denoted as CuCr-LDH). CuO showed a superior Cr³⁺ removal performance with a removal efficiency of 97.97% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 207.6 mg/g in a 13000 mg/L Cr³⁺ ion solution. In situ and ex situ X-ray absorption fine structure characterizations were carried out to elucidate the superstable mineralization mechanism. Two reaction pathways were proposed including coprecipitation-dissolution and topological transformation. The mineralized product of CuCr-LDH can be reused for the efficient removal of organic dyes, and the adsorption capacities were up to 248.0 mg/g for Congo red and 240.1 mg/g for Evans blue, respectively. Moreover, CuCr-LDH exhibited a good performance for photocatalytic CO₂ reduction to syngas (H₂/CO = 2.66) with evolution rates of 54.03 μmol/g·h for CO and of 143.94 μmol/g·h for H₂ under λ > 400 nm, respectively. More encouragingly, the actual tanning leather Cr³⁺ wastewater treated by CuO showed that Cr³⁺ can reduce from 3438 to 0.06 mg/L, which was much below discharge standards (1.5 mg/L). This work provides a new approach to the mineralization of Cr³⁺ ions through the "salt-oxide" route, and the findings reported herein may guide the future design of highly efficient mineralization agents for heavy metals.

Facile transformation of carboxymethyl cellulose beads into hollow composites for dye adsorption

Novel millimeter hollow microspheres were fabricated from carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres and polyethyleneimine using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. The hollow microspheres prepared with different polyethyleneimine usages and different polyethyleneimine treatment time were investigated deeply and characterized via SEM-EDX, FT-IR, and BET surface area analysis. It was shown that polyethyleneimine could break the coordination bonds between the carboxyl and Al (III) in carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres, leading to the formation of hollow structures. Most importantly, the usage and treatment time of polyethyleneimine can distinctly tailor the structure of the carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres, resulting in the formation of different hollow microspheres with varied shell thickness and size. Most importantly, we found that the prepared hollow microspheres have excellent adsorption performance toward targeted methyl blue under testing conditions. By virtue of the large accessible amount of -NH₂ groups and its unique hollow structure, this type of millimeter hollow microspheres have broad application prospects in the treatment of emerging contaminants in wastewater.

Poly (N-vinyl imidazole) gel-filled membrane adsorbers for highly efficient removal of dyes from water

Energy-efficient and time-saving process for recovery of hazardous dyes from wastewater is highly desired in dyeing industry. In this work, poly(N-vinyl imidazole) (PVI) gel-filled membrane adsorbers were developed for highly efficient recovery of dyes through adsorption filtration. The membrane adsorbers were fabricated via dip-coating of Nylon macroporous membranes in PVI solutions followed by quaternization crosslinking with p-xylylene dichloride (XDC). Physicochemical characterizations indicated that PVI gel was successfully filled and fixed inside the Nylon matrix. In optimized conditions. The treating capacity of membrane adsorbers to typical dye sunset yellow (25 ppm of the feed concentration) reached up to 197 mg/g with the removal ratio >99%. Both the treating capacity and the removal ratio were kept steady even when the permeation flux was as high as 1000 L/m² h. The membrane adsorbers developed in this work were able to not only remove anionic dyes from water, but also separate anionic dyes from cationic ones. The zeta potential and adsorption tests showed that the electrostatic interaction between PVI gel and dye molecules was responsible for the high removal efficiencies to anionic dyes. The membrane adsorbers can be regenerated effectively with NaOH solution and demonstrated good stability in both acidic and alkaline conditions.

Hexavalent chromium ion and methyl orange dye uptake via a silk protein sericin-chitosan conjugate

Sericin, a protein waste product of the silk industry, was crosslinked with chitosan, and a chitosan-sericin conjugate (CS) was prepared, characterized and used to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)) ions and methyl orange (MO) dye from aqueous solutions. The CS was shown to effectively remove Cr(vi) ions and MO dye at maximum adsorption capacities (Langmuir) of 139 mg g-1 for Cr(vi) ions and 385 mg g-1 for MO dye. Moreover, the adsorption of both Cr(vi) ions and MO dye was highly pH dependent and varied under different experimental conditions. Cr(vi) ion and MO dye uptake by the CS was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive spectrometry analysis. Additionally, XPS analysis of the Cr(vi)-loaded CS revealed that Cr(vi) was reduced to the less toxic Cr(iii). The CS was shown not only to be highly amenable to regeneration, but also to be able to effectively remove MO dye and Cr(vi) ions from a binary mixture.
