Abstract
The harmful effects on the environment caused by the indiscriminate use of synthetic plastics and the inadequate management of post-consumer waste have given rise to efforts to redirect this consumption to bio-based economic models. In this sense, using biopolymers to produce materials is a reality for food packaging companies searching for technologies that allow these materials to compete with those from synthetic sources. This review paper focused on the recent trends in multilayer films with the perspective of using biopolymers and natural additives for application in food packaging. Firstly, the recent developments in the area were presented concisely. Then, the main biopolymers used (gelatin, chitosan, zein, polylactic acid) and main methods for multilayer film preparation were discussed, including the layer-by-layer, casting, compression, extrusion, and electrospinning methods. Furthermore, we highlighted the bioactive compounds and how they are inserted in the multilayer systems to form active biopolymeric food packaging. Furthermore, the advantages and drawbacks of multilayer packaging development are also discussed. Finally, the main trends and challenges in using multilayer systems are presented. Therefore, this review aims to bring updated information in an innovative approach to current research on food packaging materials, focusing on sustainable resources such as biopolymers and natural additives. In addition, it proposes viable production routes for improving the market competitiveness of biopolymer materials against synthetic materials.

Abstract
Food-processing and pharmaceutical industries share a lot of stability issues against the same physical, chemical, and microbiological phenomena. They also share some solutions to improve the stability as the use of preservatives and packaging. Ecological concerns lead to the development of tremendous innovations in food. Some of these innovations could also be beneficial in the pharmaceutical domain. The objective of this review is to evaluate the potential application of these findings in the pharmaceutical field and the main limits in terms of toxicity, environmental, economic and regulatory issues. The principal factors influencing the shelf-life were highlighted through the description of the stability studies usually performed in the pharmaceutical industry (according to European guidelines). To counter those factors, different solutions are currently available as preservatives and specific packaging. They were described and debated with an overview of recent food innovations in each field. The limits of the current solutions in the pharmaceutical field and the innovation in the food field have inspired a critical pharmaceutical outlook. The active and intelligent packaging for active pharmaceutical ingredients of the future is imagined.

Abstract
Oxygen absorption measurements in continuous regard active multilayer films with different layouts, all incorporating a PET/Oxygen scavenger (OS) layer, operating as active O2 barrier, inserted between two PET inert layers, acting as passive O2 barrier. The data set is related to “Transport properties of multilayer active PET films with different layers configuration” by Apicella et al. (2018) [1]. A set of four multilayer films, with different relative thickness of the active and inert layers, was produced using a laboratory scale co-extrusion cast-film equipment and was analyzed in terms of oxygen scavenging performance. Single layer active and inert layers were also produced for comparison. The results have shown a longer exhaustion time for all the active multilayer films, respect to the active monolayer one. Moreover, at constant thickness of the active layer, the exhaustion time increases by increasing the thickness of the inert layers, whereas, at constant thickness of the inert layers, the residual oxygen concentration decreases by increasing the thickness of the active layer.
