Abstract
We report a computer vision strategy for the extraction and colorimetric analysis of catalyst degradation and product-formation kinetics from video footage. The degradation of palladium(ii) pre-catalyst systems to form 'Pd black' is investigated as a widely relevant case study for catalysis and materials chemistries. Beyond the study of catalysts in isolation, investigation of Pd-catalyzed Miyaura borylation reactions revealed informative correlations between colour parameters (most notably ΔE, a colour-agnostic measure of contrast change) and the concentration of product measured by off-line analysis (NMR and LC-MS). The breakdown of such correlations helped inform conditions under which reaction vessels were compromised by air ingress. These findings present opportunities to expand the toolbox of non-invasive analytical techniques, operationally cheaper and simpler to implement than common spectroscopic methods. The approach introduces the capability of analyzing the macroscopic 'bulk' for the study of reaction kinetics in complex mixtures, in complement to the more common study of microscopic and molecular specifics.

Potential of Deep Learning Methods for Deep Level Particle Characterization in Crystallization. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Crystalline particle properties, which are defined throughout the crystallization process chain, are strongly tied to the quality of the final product bringing along the need of detailed particle characterization. The most important characteristics are the size, shape and purity, which are influenced by agglomeration. Therefore, a pure size determination is often insufficient and a deep level evaluation regarding agglomerates and primary crystals bound in agglomerates is desirable as basis to increase the quality of crystalline products. We present a promising deep learning approach for particle characterization in crystallization. In an end-to-end fashion, the interactions and processing steps are minimized. Based on instance segmentation, all crystals containing single crystals, agglomerates and primary crystals in agglomerates are detected and classified with pixel-level accuracy. The deep learning approach shows superior performance to previous image analysis methods and reaches a new level of detail. In experimental studies, L-alanine is crystallized from aqueous solution. A detailed description of size and number of all particles including primary crystals is provided and characteristic measures for the level of agglomeration are given. This can lead to a better process understanding and has the potential to serve as cornerstone for kinetic studies.

Abstract
A novel shadowgraphic inline probe to measure crystal size distributions (CSD), based on acquired greyscale images, is evaluated in terms of elevated temperatures and fragile crystals, and compared to well-established, alternative online and offline measurement techniques, i.e., sieving analysis and online microscopy. Additionally, the operation limits, with respect to temperature, supersaturation, suspension, and optical density, are investigated. Two different substance systems, potassium dihydrogen phosphate (prisms) and thiamine hydrochloride (needles), are crystallized for this purpose at 25 L scale. Crystal phases of the well-known KH2PO4/H2O system are measured continuously by the inline probe and in a bypass by the online microscope during cooling crystallizations. Both measurement techniques show similar results with respect to the crystal size distribution, except for higher temperatures, where the bypass variant tends to fail due to blockage. Thiamine hydrochloride, a substance forming long and fragile needles in aqueous solutions, is solidified with an anti-solvent crystallization with ethanol. The novel inline probe could identify a new field of application for image-based crystal size distribution measurements, with respect to difficult particle shapes (needles) and elevated temperatures, which cannot be evaluated with common techniques.

Abstract
A recently developed continuous enantioseparation process utilizing two coupled fluidized bed crystallizers is systematically investigated to identify essential correlations between different operation parameters and the corresponding process performance on the example of asparagine monohydrate. Based on liquid phase composition and product crystal size distribution data, it is proven that steady state operation is achieved reproducibly in a relatively short time. The process outputs at steady state are compared for different feed flow rates, supersaturations, and crystallization temperatures. It is shown that purities >97% are achieved with productivities up to 40 g/L/h. The size distribution, which depends almost exclusively on the liquid flow rate, can be easily adjusted between 260 and 330 µm (mean size) with an almost constant standard deviation of ±55 µm.
