Abstract
We present here the extension of the crossover soft-statistical associating fluid theory (soft-SAFT) equation of state to mixtures, as well as some illustrative applications of the methodology to mixtures of particular scientific and technological interest. The procedure is based on White's work (White, J. A. Fluid Phase Equilib. 1992, 75, 53) from the renormalization group theory, as for the pure fluids, with the isomorphism assumption applied to the mixtures. The equation is applied to three groups of mixtures: selected mixtures of n-alkanes, the CO2/n-alkane homologous series, and the CO2/1-alkanol homologous series. The crossover equation is first applied to the pure components of the mixtures, CO2 and the 1-alkanol family, while an available correlation is used for the molecular parameters of the n-alkane series (Llovell et al. J. Chem. Phys 2004, 121, 10715). A set of transferable molecular parameters is provided for the 1-alkanols series; these are accurate for the whole range of thermodynamic conditions. The crossover soft-SAFT equation is able to accurately describe these compounds near to and far from the critical point. The theory is then used to represent the phase behavior and the critical phenomena of the selected mixtures. We use binary interaction parameters xi and eta for dissimilar mixtures. These parameters are fitted at some particular conditions (one subcritical temperature or binary critical data) and used to predict the behavior of the mixture at different conditions (other subcritical conditions and/or critical conditions). The equation is able to capture the continuous change in the critical behavior of the CO2/n-alkane and the CO2/1-alkanol homologous series as the chain length of the second compound increases. Excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained, even in the most nonideal cases. The new equation is proved to be a powerful tool to study the global phase behavior of complex systems, as well as other thermodynamic properties of very challenging mixtures.

Abstract
A modification of the statistical associating fluid theory, the so-called Soft-SAFT equation of state, is proposed to predict the excess thermodynamic properties of binary mixtures of n-alkanes. n-Alkane molecules are modeled as fully flexible Lennard-Jones chains. This molecular model accounts for the most important microscopic features of real chainlike molecules: attractive and repulsive interactions between different chemical groups and the connectivity of the segments that form the molecules. In this work we consider an additional microscopic effect that can profoundly affect certain thermodynamic properties, namely, the conformational changes when two different n-alkane molecules are mixed. We propose, following the work of Vega and co-workers [J. Chem. Phys. 1999, 111, 3192], a simple model to account for the conformational changes in molecules. The resulting free energy is combined with the SAFT free energy to describe the excess thermodynamic properties of binary mixtures of n-alkanes. Predictions from the theory are compared with experimental data taken from the literature. The agreement between the experiments and the theoretical predictions is excellent in all cases. This work shows that although minor microscopic effects, such as the conformational changes in the molecules that form the mixtures, have only a very small effect on the usual thermodynamic properties, such as pressure, chemical potential, phase equilibria, and excess volumes, they can contribute significantly to other thermodynamic properties. In fact, one of the main conclusions of this work is that it is essential that conformational effects be taken into account in molecular-based theories if an accurate description of certain excess properties (excess enthalpy for instance) is desired.

Abstract
The SAFT-VRX equation of state combines the SAFT-VR equation with a crossover function that smoothly transforms the classical equation into a nonanalytical form close to the critical point. By a combinination of the accuracy of the SAFT-VR approach away from the critical region with the asymptotic scaling behavior seen at the critical point of real fluids, the SAFT-VRX equation can accurately describe the global fluid phase diagram. In previous work, we demonstrated that the SAFT-VRX equation very accurately describes the pvT and phase behavior of both nonassociating and associating pure fluids, with a minimum of fitting to experimental data. Here, we present a generalized SAFT-VRX equation of state for binary mixtures that is found to accurately predict the vapor-liquid equilibrium and pvT behavior of the systems studied. In particular, we examine binary mixtures of n-alkanes and carbon dioxide + n-alkanes. The SAFT-VRX equation accurately describes not only the gas-liquid critical locus for these systems but also the vapor-liquid equilibrium phase diagrams and thermal properties in single-phase regions.

Abstract
A modified version of the statistical associating fluid theory (SAFT), the so-called soft-SAFT equation of state (EOS), has been extended by a crossover treatment to take into account the long density fluctuations encountered when the critical region is approached. The procedure, based on White's work from the renormalization group theory [Fluid Phase Equilibria 75, 53 (1992); L. W. Salvino and J. A. White, J. Chem. Phys. 96, 4559 (1992)], is implemented in terms of recursion relations where the density fluctuations are successively incorporated. The crossover soft-SAFT equation provides the correct nonclassical critical exponents when approaching the critical point, and reduces to the original soft-SAFT equation far from the critical region. The accuracy of the global equation is tested by direct comparison with molecular simulation results of Lennard-Jones chains, obtaining very good agreement and clear improvements compared to the original soft-SAFT EOS. Excellent agreement with vapor-liquid equilibrium experimental data inside and outside the critical region for the n-alkane series is also obtained. We provide a set of transferable molecular parameters for this family, unique for the whole range of thermodynamic properties.

Abstract
The equilibrium as well as nonequilibrium phase behaviors of colloidal dispersions have been investigated using statistical-mechanical theories of fluids and solids in complement with the renormalization-group (RG) theory. It is shown that the osmotic second virial coefficient at the critical point of the fluid-fluid transition varies with the range of attractions and is sensitive to specific forms of the attractive potential in contrast to a common speculation that it remains practically constant. However, for colloids with short-ranged forces, the critical temperature of the fluid-fluid phase transition is well correlated with the range of attractions in good agreement with an earlier empirical correlation based on simulation results. A comparison of the relative positions of the fluid-fluid coexistence curve, freezing, melting, and percolation lines in the phase diagram indicates that the gelation in colloidal systems has significant effects on the equilibrium phase transitions and crystallization, especially when the attractions between colloidal particles are short ranged.
