Vascular abnormalities in a fetus with multiple pterygia

Bartsocas-Papas syndrome with internal anomalies: evidence for a more generalized epithelial defect or new syndrome?

We report on two Dutch sibs with external anomalies compatible with Bartsocas-Papas syndrome, who also had internal anomalies: bilateral renal agenesis in one, and esophageal atresia, hypoplastic diaphragma, unilateral renal agenesis, agenesis of the shaft of the penis, and anal atresia in the other patient. Several possible patterns for the pathogenesis of this combination of anomalies are discussed. We propose a generalized epithelial defect, affecting both epidermis and other lining epithelia, as the most probable cause in the present patients.

Structural anomalies resulting from vascular disruption

A diverse yet distinctive group of disorders and structural anomalies result from vascular disruption of embryonic and fetal blood vessels. The extent of damage, timing in gestation, and the mechanism of vascular disruption all determine the nature of the resultant structural anomalies. The developing human remains susceptible throughout pregnancy to teratogenic agents and events that alter uterine, placental, and embryonic or fetal circulation.

Bartsocas-Papas syndrome: three familial cases from Spain

We report on 3 Spanish sibs with the Bartsocas-Papas syndrome. This appears to be the seventh reported family; all but one of them are of Mediterranean origin. We propose that a generalized vascular disruption is the most likely pathogenetic mechanism for the anomalies found in this syndrome.

The popliteal pterygium syndrome: report of a new family and review of the literature

This paper reports on a family with popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS), which was ascertained through a baby with most of the major signs of the syndrome. The mother, who had a repaired cleft palate and toe syndactyly, had been aware that her syndactyly was familial, but her unpreparedness for the birth of a child with PPS led to interest in, and a subsequent review of, the differnetial diagnosis and the variable expression of the clinical manifestations of this syndrome. Upon review, some earlier reported cases were excluded as PPS, and certain ascertainment and reporting biases that could affect such an analysis were considered.
