Ellis-van Creveld syndrome in a patient from Tanzania

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma in a child with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome: Case report

INTRODUCTION

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder predominantly characterized by a disproportionate dwarfism, ectodermal dysplasia, postaxial polydactyly, and congenital heart malformations and pulmonary hypoplasia.

OBJECTIVE

In this article, we hereby present a case of a 6-year-old Brazilian boy with EVC syndrome who presented a rare oral lesion as well as a remarkable number of classical and uncommon oral and dental features.

CASE REPORT

Clinical and radiographic examination revealed multiple enamel hypoplasia, teeth agenesis, conical teeth, lower canine rotation, bilateral posterior crossbite, taurodontism of deciduous and permanent molars and delayed tooth eruption, dental caries, and absent vestibular sulcus. Additionally, a whitish lobulated nodule located in the alveolar ridge in the anterior region of the mandible was noted. Anatomopathological examination was compatible with the diagnosis of peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POF). In a 10-month clinical follow-up, no signs of recurrence were observed.

CONCLUSION

In view of the characteristic oral findings of EVC syndrome and the potential for recurrence of POF, the pediatric dentist plays an essential role in clinical follow-up, planning and preventive, and rehabilitative treatment.

Microdeletion of 4p16.2 in Children: A Case Report and Literature Review

Copy number variations (CNV) are thought to play an important role in causing human diseases, including congenital anomalies, psychiatric disorders, and intellectual disabilities. We report here a one-year-old boy presented to our clinic as developmental delay. He presented a birth weight of 4.5 kg, motor delay, mental retardation, mild hypertonia, and some dysmorphic features (mild frontal bossing, hypertelorism, epicanthus, concave nasal ridge, slightly sparse hair, short hands, and mild nail dysplasia). The brain MRI indicated brain abnormalities; the Gross Motor Function Measure-66 score was 23.37; the Gesell test result showed the development quotient was 50, suggesting mental retardation. Chromosomal microarray analysis showed an approximately 97 kb microdeletion at 4p16.2 (4p16.2 CNV), including part of EVC and EVC2 genes, which were associated with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC) and Weyers acrofacial dysostosis (WAD). This report suggests 4p16.2 microdeletion may be associated with multiple developmental abnormalities, including motor delay and mental retardation.

Inauguration of the Tanzania Society of Human Genetics: Biomedical Research in Tanzania with Emphasis on Human Genetics and Genomics

Human genetics research and applications are rapidly growing areas in health innovations and services. African populations are reported to be highly diverse and carry the greatest number of variants per genome. Exploring these variants is key to realize the genomic medicine initiative. However, African populations are grossly underrepresented in various genomic databases, which has alerted scientists to address this issue with urgency. In Tanzania, human genetics research and services are conducted in different institutions on both communicable and noncommunicable diseases. However, there is poor coordination of the research activities, often leading to limited application of the research findings and poor utilization of available resources. In addition, contributions from Tanzanian human genetics research and services are not fully communicated to the government, national, and international communities. To address this scientific gap, the Tanzania Society of Human Genetics (TSHG) has been formed to bring together all stakeholders of human genetics activities in Tanzania and to formally bring Tanzania as a member to the African Society of Human Genetics. This article describes the inauguration event of the TSHG, which took place in November 2019. It provides a justification for its establishment and discusses presentations from invited speakers who took part in the inauguration of the TSHG.
