Aryldiazonium Salts and DABSO: a Versatile Combination for Three-Component Sulfonylative Cross-Coupling Reactions

A combination of aryldiazonium salts and DABSO provides a unique opportunity for sulfonylative multicomponent cross-coupling reactions. Here, a copper-catalyzed three-component cross-coupling of aryldiazonium salts, DABSO with arylboronic acids to obtain medicinally relevant unsymmetrical diarylsulfones is disclosed. Interestingly, a catalyst-free approach for the synthesis of arylvinylsulfones from the corresponding vinyl boronic acid or vinyl halides is explored under basic condition. Tethered aryldiazonium salts provided the corresponding annulated alkylvinylsulfones via alkene difunctionalization under the same transition metal-free condition. Mechanistically, these multicomponent reactions proceed through a single electron pathway by the formation of arylsulfonyl radical as a key intermediate.

Usually, a broad reaction scope is observed including tertiary, secondary, and primary alkyl halides, with good functional group compatibility.

Oxy-Alkylation of Allylamines with Unactivated Alkyl Bromides and CO2 via Visible-Light-Driven Palladium Catalysis

A selective oxy-alkylation of allylamines with unactivated alkyl bromides and CO₂ via visible-light-driven palladium catalysis is reported. The commercially available Pd(PPh₃)₄ is used as the sole catalyst in this three-component reaction. A variety of tertiary, secondary, and primary alkyl bromides undergo reactions to generate important 2-oxazolidinones in high yields and selectivity. The mild reaction conditions, easy scalability, and facile derivatization of products provide great potential for application in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Palladium/Light Induced Radical Alkenylation and Allylation of Alkyl Iodides Using Alkenyl and Allylic Sulfones

Alkenylation and allylation of alkyl iodides with alkenyl and allyl sulfones, respectively, took place under Pd/photoirradiation system. The initial alkyl radical, derived from a single electron transfer between Pd(0) and RI, underwent the title transformations. Pd(0) was regenerated through a reductive elimination of PhSO₂PdI, which is formed by the combination of the sulfonyl radical and the palladium radical. The addition of water was effective, presumably by pushing the equilibrium through hydrolysis of PhSO₂I.

Bromoallylation of Alkenes Leading to 4-Alkenyl Bromides Based on Trapping of β-Bromoalkyl Radicals

A radical-chain addition of allyl bromides to aryl alkenes, vinyl ester, and vinyl phthalimide was studied in which elusive β-bromoalkyl radicals were trapped efficiently to give 5-bromo-1-pentenes in good to high yields (16 examples). A subsequent carbonylative radical cyclization with AIBN/Bu₃SnH/CO was successful in giving the corresponding 3,5-disubstituted cyclohexanone derivatives in moderate yields. Synthesis of a piperidine ring was also successful by subsequent reaction with primary amine.
