Superoxide Radical Anion‐Mediated Aerobic Oxidative Synthesis of 2‐Substituted Quinazolines under Visible Light

Visible-light photocatalyzed C-N bond activation of tertiary amines: a three-component approach to synthesize quinazolines

A metal-free three-component approach has been developed to prepare 2,4-disubstituted quinazolines from o-acylanilines, trialkylamines and ammonium chloride under visible-light using eosin Y as the photocatalyst. The notable features of this work include (i) the use of tertiary amines as an alkyl synthon and triethanolamine as a C2-OH synthon; (ii) good functional group tolerance with 52%-98% yields; (iii) proof of concept with o-amino benzaldehyde as a substrate to deliver 2-methyl quinazoline 3pa; and (iv) gram-scale synthesis of compounds 3ga, 3ja and 3ma. A reductive quenching mechanism was proposed based on the control studies and redox potential values.

Type I 'Lighted Metal-free' Photosensitizing Assemblies of Phenazine for Aerobic Oxidative Transformations

Highly photostable supramolecular photosensitizing 'lighted metal-free' assemblies of DPZ-Th have been developed which show strong absorption in the visible region and excellent electron transportation potential from donor to acceptor units. The as-prepared assemblies of DPZ-Th activate aerial oxygen to generate Type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) under visible-light irradiation in mixed aqueous media. Owing to these properties, the as-prepared DPZ-Th assemblies exhibit high photocatalytic activity in catalyzing the aerobic oxidative coupling of benzylamines and synthesis of quinazolines. Various spectroscopic studies support the participation of Type I reactive species in the reaction mechanism. The 'pure' oxygen environment was not needed for carrying out these transformations and all the reactions proceed very well under aerial conditions to furnish the desired products in high yields.

"Metal-Free" Nanoassemblies of AIEE-ICT-Active Pyrazine Derivative: Efficient Photoredox System for the Synthesis of Benzimidazoles

Supramolecular nanoassemblies of an AIEE-ICT-active pyrazine derivative (TETPY) having strong absorption in the visible region and excellent transportability have been utilized as an efficient photoredox catalytic system for the synthesis of a variety of benzimidazoles having electron-withdrawing/electron-releasing/aliphatic groups under "metal-free" conditions. The reaction protocol involves the successful harvesting of visible light by TETPY assemblies to catalyze the coupling of o-phenylenediamine/substituted diamines and substituted aromatic/heterocyclic/aliphatic aldehydes under aerial conditions using mixed aqueous media as the reaction solvent. TETPY assemblies could activate aerial oxygen to generate superoxide for completing the vital proton abstraction step without the need for any external metal/base/oxidant. Moreover, all the products are purified by recrystallization from organic solvents. The TETPY assemblies also exhibited high efficiency in catalyzing the synthesis of 2-substituted benzothiazoles and quinazolines in excellent yields.

Iron Complexes Anchored onto Magnetically Separable Graphene Oxide Sheets: An Excellent Catalyst for the Synthesis of Dihydroquinazoline-Based Compounds

In this work, a green, sustainable, and efficient protocol for the syntheses of dihydroquinazoline derivatives is proposed. Initially, three Schiff base complexes of iron containing the ligand (2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl)bis(azanylylidene)bis(methanylylidene)bis(2,4-Xphenol), where X = Cl (complex 1)/Br (complex 2)/I (complex 3), were synthesized, fully characterized, and used in the desired syntheses. Complex 1 excelled as a catalyst, closely followed by complexes 2 and 3. DFT calculations helped in rationalizing the role of the halide substituent in the ligand backbone as a relevant factor in the catalytic superiority of complex 1 over complexes 2 and 3 for the synthesis of the dihydroquinazoline derivatives. Finally, to facilitate catalyst recoverability and reusability, complex 1 was immobilized on GO@Fe₃O₄@APTES (GO, graphene oxide; APTES, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane) to generate GO@Fe₃O₄@APTES@FeL¹ (GOTESFe). GOTESFe was thoroughly characterized through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and efficiently used for the synthesis of dihydroquinazoline derivatives. GOTESFe could be magnetically recovered and reused up to five cycles without compromising its catalytic efficiency. Therefore, immobilization of the chosen iron complex onto magnetic GO sheets offers an extremely competent route in providing a blueprint of a readily recoverable, reusable, robust, and potent catalyst for the synthesis of dihydroquinazoline-based compounds.

Base-Promoted Synthesis of 2-Aryl Quinazolines from 2-Aminobenzylamines in Water

A transition-metal-free procedure for the synthesis of a highly valuable class of heteroaromatics, quinazolines, was developed by using easily available 2-aminobenzylamines and α,α,α-trihalotoluenes. The transformation proceeded smoothly in the presence of only sodium hydroxide and molecular oxygen in water at 100 °C, furnishing a variety of 2-aryl quinazolines. The crystallization process of the crude reaction mixture for the purification of the solid products circumvents huge solvent-consuming workup and column chromatographic techniques, which make the overall process more sustainable and economical.
