Realization of Photo‐Thermal Metathesis Under Microwave Irradiation Conditions: An Entry to Triquinane Frameworks

Late-stage Modification of Cage Diones by Tandem Metathesis

Herein, we report the application of tandem ring-opening cross-metathesis (ROCM) and tandem ring-opening cross-metathesis followed by cross-metathesis (ROCM/CM) in highly strained diastereomeric heptacyclic cage diones (HCCD's) catalyzed by ruthenium catalysts. These caged diastereomeric compounds have a high degree of ring strain as well as steric congestion. Therefore, the present work related to ROCM is unique and intricate as compared to simple norbornene derivatives. It is useful to prepare new hexacyclic cage derivatives suitable for high-energy density materials. The synthetic strategy of starting cage compounds features the Diels-Alder reaction, and [2+2] photocycloaddition as key steps.

Annulation Tactics of cis-syn-cis Triquinanes by Allylsilanes: Application of Hosomi-Sakurai Reaction Conditions

A stereoselective [3+2] cycloaddition approach to functionalized pentaquinanes starting from cis-syn-cis triquinanes, derived from Cookson's diones, is reported. This transformation involves generation of six new stereocenters in a single step leading to cis-anti-cis-syn-cis-anti-cis polyquinane systems. Our method prevents transannular cyclizations which are prevalent in these moieties. The structure and stereochemistry of target molecules are well-characterized based on NMR data and X-ray diffraction studies.

The title di­chloro-substituted hemiketal derivative of a cis–syn–cis triquinane is described.

The title racemic triquinane, C₁₄H₁₄Cl₂O₂, is composed of four five-membered rings, one of which is a tetra­hydro­furan ring to which an allyl group on one side and a hydroxyl group on the other side are attached. The core of the triquinane unit has a cis–syn–cis configuration. In the crystal, the mol­ecules are linked by pairwise O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating inversion dimers featuring R²₂(8) loops.

Photochemical methods in metathesis reactions

Metathesis reactions are one of the most reliable and prevalent ways of creating a C-C bond in synthesis. Photochemical variants exist, and they have proven extremely useful for the construction of complex molecules, from natural products to Möbius rings. A variety of starting materials can undergo photometathesis reactions, including alkenes, alkynes, carbonyls, thiocarbonyls, and ketenes. While many of these reactions proceed with UV light and require harsh conditions, a handful of new techniques for visible-light photometathesis reactions have appeared recently. Given the current developments in visible-light photocatalysis, we believe that many more visible light photometathesis reactions await discovery. In this first review on the subject of photometathesis, we have gathered the relevant literature to give the reader an in-depth understanding of the field, and to inspire further development and synthetic application of these fascinating reactions.

Rational Design of Triplet Sensitizers for the Transfer of Excited State Photochemistry from UV to Visible

Time Dependent Density Functional Theory has been used to assist the design and synthesis of a series thioxanthone triplet sensitizers. Calculated energies of the triplet excited state (E_T) informed both the type and position of auxochromes placed on the thioxanthone core, enabling fine-tuning of the UV-vis absorptions and associated triplet energies. The calculated results were highly consistent with experimental observation in both the order of the λ_max and E_T values. The synthesized compounds were then evaluated for their efficacies as triplet sensitizers in a variety of UV and visible light preparative photochemical reactions. The results of this study exceeded expectations; in particular [2 + 2] cycloaddition chemistry that had previously been sensitized in the UV was found to undergo cycloaddition at 455 nm (blue) with a 2- to 9-fold increase in productivity (g/h) relative to input power. This study demonstrates the ability of powerful modern computational methods to aid in the design of successful and productive triplet sensitized photochemical reactions.
