Multitasking FeOCN Composite as an Economic, Heterogeneous Catalyst for 1‐Octene Hydroformylation and Hydration Reactions

PdII on Guanidine-Functionalized Fe3O4 Nanoparticles as an Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling and Reduction of Nitroarenes in Aqueous Media

This paper presents guanidine-functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle-supported palladium (II) (Fe3O4@Guanidine-Pd) as an effective catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl halides using phenylboronic acids and also for selective reduction of nitroarenes to their corresponding amines. Fe3O4@Guanidine-Pd synthesized is well characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, thermal gravimetric analysis, XPS, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry analysis. The prepared Fe3O4@Guanidine-Pd showed effective catalytic performance in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions by converting aryl halides to their corresponding biaryl derivatives in an aqueous environment in a shorter reaction time and with a meagerly small amount of catalyst (0.22 mol %). Also, the prepared Fe3O4@Guanidine-Pd effectively reduced nitroarenes to their corresponding amino derivatives in aqueous media at room temperature with a high turnover number and turnover frequency with the least amount of catalyst (0.13 mol %). The most prominent feature of Fe3O4@Guanidine-Pd as a catalyst is the ease of separation of the catalyst from the reaction mixture after the reaction with the help of an external magnet with good recovery yield and also reuse of the recovered catalyst for a few cycles without significant loss in its catalytic activity.

Synthesis of 2-Aryl Acetophenones via Hydrobromination and Oxy-isomerization of (o-Arylethynyl)benzyl Alcohols

Hydrobromination and oxy-isomerization of (o-arylethynyl)benzyl alcohols to yield brominated aryl ketones were achieved with bromotrimethylsilane. The substrate scope suggested that vinyl carbocations, stabilized by the conjugated aryl groups, are the reaction intermediates. 1H-Isochromene was also detected by ¹H NMR, and an isolated 1H-isochromene was converted to the product when retreated with TMSBr. The formation of 1H-isochromene is equivalent to a 6-endo-dig cyclization and contrasts with the corresponding reactions under basic conditions, in which the 5-exo-dig process dominated.

Phosphorus Ligands in Hydroformylation and Hydrogenation: A Personal Account

Metal-catalyzed hydroformylation and hydrogenation heavily rely on ligands, among which phosphorous ligands play a pivotal role. This personal account presents a selection of three distinct classes of phosphorous ligands, namely, monodentate meta-substituted phosphinites, bis-phosphites, and P-chiral supramolecular phosphines, developed in our group. The synthesis of these ligands, isolation, characterization, and their performance in transition metal-catalyzed hydroformylation, isomerizing hydroformylation, and asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins is summarized. The state of the art development in iron-catalyzed hydroformylation of alkenes and our contributions to the field is discussed. Use of phosphines enabled iron-catalyzed hydroformylation of alkenes under mild conditions. Thus, this account demonstrates the central role of phosphorus ligands in industrially relevant transformations such as hydrogenation and hydroformylation. The seemingly matured field of ligand discovery still holds significant potential and will steer the field of homogeneous catalysis.

Iron/N-doped graphene nano-structured catalysts for general cyclopropanation of olefins

An Fe-based heterogeneous catalyst allows for the synthesis of cyclopropanes via a carbene transfer reaction, a transformation usually belonging to the homogeneous domain.

The first examples of heterogeneous Fe-catalysed cyclopropanation reactions are presented. Pyrolysis of in situ-generated iron/phenanthroline complexes in the presence of a carbonaceous material leads to specific supported nanosized iron particles, which are effective catalysts for carbene transfer reactions. Using olefins as substrates, cyclopropanes are obtained in high yields and moderate diastereoselectivities. The developed protocol is scalable and the activity of the recycled catalyst after deactivation can be effectively restored using an oxidative reactivation protocol under mild conditions.
