Abstract
A sustainable approach for pharmaceutically important pyrimidine derivatives is achieved by using biogenically produced single-phase δ-MnO2 NPs under external ligand-free conditions. The phytochemicals that comprise the extract of Areca Nut Husk (ANH) have been discovered to serve as reducing agents. The role of phytochemicals is not only to aid in the reduction of Mn(VII) into Mn(IV), but they also have an important role in stabilizing the catalyst. The establishment of δ-MnO2 NPs was confirmed inveterate by FE-SEM, p-XRD, ICP-OES (Mn content = 43.17% w/w), EDX, and with an active Mn content of 43.17% w/w. A series of pyrimidine derivatives were prepared in good yields using a one-pot multicomponent synthesis approach under atmospheric conditions. In addition, hot filtration tests, control experiments, gram-scale synthesis, and mechanistic investigations were demonstrated. Additionally, antimicrobial activity studies of δ-MnO2 NPs and pyrimidine derivatives against the Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, growth curve and minimum inhibitory concentration were studied.

Abstract
Pyrimidine is a pharmacologically important moiety that exhibits diverse biological activities. This review reflects the growing significance of transition metal-catalyzed reactions for the synthesis of pyrimidines (with no discussion being made on the transition metal-catalyzed functionalization of pyrimidines). The effect of different catalysts on the selectivity/yields of pyrimidines and catalyst recyclability (wherever applicable) are described, together with attempts to illustrate the role of the catalyst through mechanisms. Although several methods have been researched for synthesizing this privileged scaffold, there has been a considerable push to expand transition metal-catalyzed, sustainable, efficient and selective synthetic strategies leading to pyrimidines. The aim of the authors with this update (2017-2023) is to drive the designing of new transition metal-mediated protocols for pyrimidine synthesis.

Abstract
A Ru(II)-catalyzed efficient and selective N-alkylation of amines by C1-C10 aliphatic alcohols is reported. The catalyst [Ru(L1a)(PPh3)Cl2] (1a) bearing a tridentate redox-active azo-aromatic pincer, 2-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L1a) is air-stable, easy to prepare, and showed wide functional group tolerance requiring only 1.0 mol % (for N-methylation and N-ethylation) and 0.1 mol % of catalyst loading for N-alkylation with C3-C10 alcohols. A wide array of N-methylated, N-ethylated, and N-alkylated amines were prepared in moderate to good yields via direct coupling of amines and alcohols. 1a efficiently catalyzes the N-alkylation of diamines selectively. It is even suitable for synthesizing N-alkylated diamines using (aliphatic) diols producing the tumor-active drug molecule MSX-122 in moderate yield. 1a showed excellent chemo-selectivity during the N-alkylation using oleyl alcohol and monoterpenoid β-citronellol. Control experiments and mechanistic investigations revealed that the 1a-catalyzed N-alkylation reactions proceed via a borrowing hydrogen transfer pathway where the hydrogen removed from the alcohol during the dehydrogenation step is stored in the ligand backbone of 1a, which in the subsequent steps transferred to the in situ formed imine intermediate to produce the N-alkylated amines.

Abstract
The hydrogen borrowing strategy is an economical method for the α-functionalization of ketones. While this strategy is extremely advantageous, it does not lend itself to the synthesis of β,β-disubstituted ketones. This can be achieved, if the in situ generated metal hydride can be intercepted with a nucleophilic coupling partner. We present a multicomponent strategy for the coupling of alcohols, ketones, and boronic acids using only 1 mol % nickel catalyst and without the need for added ligands.

Abstract
Heteroatom-participated lignin depolymerization for heterocyclic aromatic compounds production is of great importance to expanding the product portfolio and meeting value-added biorefinery demand, but it is also particularly challenging. In this work, the synthesis of pyrimidines from lignin β-O-4 model compounds, the most abundant segment in lignin, mediated by NaOH through a one-pot multi-component cascade reaction is reported. Mechanism study suggests that the transformation starts by NaOH-induced deprotonation of Cα-H bond in β-O-4 model compounds, and involves highly coupled sequential cleavage of C-O bonds, alcohol dehydrogenation, aldol condensation, and dehydrogenative aromatization. This strategy features transition-metal free catalysis, a sustainable universal approach, no need of external oxidant/reductant, and an efficient one-pot process, thus providing an unprecedented opportunity for N-containing aromatic heterocyclic compounds synthesis from biorenewable feedstock. With this protocol, an important marine alkaloid meridianin derivative can be synthesized, emphasizing the application feasibility in pharmaceutical synthesis. Lignin depolymerization to make heterocyclic aromatic compounds is of great importance to expanding the product portfolio derived from biomass, but it is also particularly challenging. In this work, the authors report pyrimidine synthesis from lignin β-O-4 model compounds via a one-pot multicomponent cascade reaction.

Abstract
Herein, we report ligand-centered redox controlled Zn(II)-catalyzed multicomponent approaches for synthesizing pyrimidines and triazines. Taking advantage of the ligand-centered redox events and using a well-defined Zn(II)-catalyst (1a) bearing (E)-2-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L1a) as the redox-active ligand, a wide variety of substituted pyrimidines and triazines were prepared via dehydrogenative alcohol functionalization reactions. Pyrimidines were prepared via two pathways: (i) dehydrogenative coupling of primary and secondary alcohols with amidines and (ii) dehydrogenative coupling of primary alcohols with alkynes and amidines. Triazines were prepared via dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols and amidines. Catalyst 1a is well tolerant to a wide range of substrates yielding the desired pyrimidines and triazines in moderate to good isolated yields. A series of control reactions were performed to predict the plausible mechanism, suggesting that the active participation of the ligand-centered redox events enables the Zn(II)-complex 1a to act as an efficient catalyst for synthesizing these N-heterocycles. Electron transfer processes occur at the azo-aromatic ligand throughout the catalytic reaction, and the Zn(II)-center serves only as a template.

Abstract
Catalysis offers a straightforward route to prepare various value-added molecules starting from readily available raw materials. The catalytic reactions mostly involve multi-electron transformations. Hence, compared to the inexpensive and readily available 3d-metals, the 4d and 5d-transition metals get an extra advantage for performing multi-electron catalytic reactions as the heavier transition metals prefer two-electron redox events. However, for sustainable development, these expensive and scarce heavy metal-based catalysts need to be replaced by inexpensive, environmentally benign, and economically affordable 3d-metal catalysts. In this regard, a metal-ligand cooperative approach involving transition metal complexes of redox noninnocent ligands offers an attractive alternative. The synergistic participation of redox-active ligands during electron transfer events allows multi-electron transformations using 3d-metal catalysts and allows interesting chemical transformations using 4d and 5d-metals as well. Herein we summarize an up-to-date literature report on the metal-ligand cooperative approaches using transition metal complexes of redox noninnocent ligands as catalysts for a few selected types of catalytic reactions.

Abstract
An efficient and general protocol for the synthesis of functionalized 2,4,6-triaryl pyridines and pyrimidines was developed from commercially available aromatic ketones, aldehydes and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) as a nitrogen source under microwave irradiation. In this multicomponent synthetic route, Lewis acids play an important role in selectively synthesizing six-membered heterocycles, including pyridines (1N) and pyrimidines (2N), by involving [2 + 1 + 2 + 1] or [2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1] annulated processes. Abstract
Herein we report nickel-catalyzed sustainable synthesis of a few chosen five-membered fused nitrogen heterocycles such as benzimidazole, purine, benzothiazole, and benzoxazole via acceptorless dehydrogenative functionalization of alcohols. Using a bench stable, easy to prepare, and inexpensive Ni(ii)-catalyst, [Ni(MeTAA)] (1a), featuring a tetraaza macrocyclic ligand (tetramethyltetraaza[14]annulene (MeTAA)), a wide variety of polysubstituted benzimidazole, purine, benzothiazole, and benzoxazole derivatives were prepared via dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with 1,2-diaminobenzene, 4,5-diaminopyrimidine, 2-aminothiphenol, and 2-aminophenol, respectively. A wide array of benzimidazoles were also prepared via a borrowing hydrogen approach involving alcohols as hydrogen donors and 2-nitroanilines as hydrogen acceptors. Abstract
A convenient metal-free synthesis of unsymmetrical 2-aminopyrimidines from imidazolate enaminones has been developed. In this procedure, various structural 2-aminopyrimidines, as well as 4,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-ols and pyrazoles were synthesized in moderate to excellent yields. A plausible mechanism was also proposed for the cascade reaction. This method represents an effective strategy towards the synthesis of unsymmetrical 2-aminopyrimidines. A convenient metal-free synthesis of unsymmetrical 2-aminopyrimidines from imidazolate enaminones has been developed.![]()

Abstract
A simple catalytic synthesis of luminescent pyrimidines from benzamidines and alcohols is reported. These one-pot, acceptor-less dehydrogenative coupling reactions are catalyzed by a ruthenium hydrido chloride complex (1), supported by a chelating P^N ligand (L1) bearing a benzannulated phenanthridine donor arm. The pyrimidines thus produced are emissive in solution, with photoluminescence quantum yields reaching 72%. Details of the catalytic synthesis and characterization of the pyrimidines in both solution and the solid state are reported, along with computational modeling of the emissive excited states of representative examples.
