Palatal thickening and facial form in Paranthropus: examination of alternative developmental models

Paranthropus is distinctive among hominoids in its possession of a greatly thickened hard palate. Although traditionally considered a structural adaptation to counter high-magnitude masticatory stress, alternative developmental models are equally viable. Three models of palatal thickening were evaluated in this study. A mechanical model interprets palatal thickening as a compensatory response to increased instability of the midpalatal suture effected by an anterior placement of the masseteric muscle mass. This model predicts that palatal thickness is correlated with the length of the palate posterior to the masseteric tubercle. Two non-mechanical models consider the thickness of the hard palate to be structurally related to and therefore correlated with either 1) the degree to which the premaxilla overlaps the hard palate in the subnasal region or 2) the height of the posterior facial skeleton. The correlation of craniofacial variables was assessed intraspecifically in ontogenetic series of great ape and human crania. Tests of correlation were performed for each comparison using both residuals calculated from reduced major axis regression of the variable of interest against a measure of cranial size and shape ratios. A significant correlation of palatal thickness with posterior facial height in Pan suggests that the unusually thick hard palate of Paranthropus is directly related to the increased posterior facial height characteristic of this taxon. Further evaluation suggests that extreme palatal thickening in these specimens occurred by virtue of their possession of a nasal septum morphology in which the vomer extends onto the superior and nasal surface of the premaxilla. Such a morphology would have constrained the palatal nasal lamina to maintain the approximate level of the premaxillary nasal lamina throughout the growth process thereby promoting palatal thickening.

Experimental investigations into the clinical significance of bone growth at viscerocranial sutures

The development of a viscerocranial suture under physiological conditions was investigated in a total of 37 pigs and the effects of various traumas on expected sutural bone growth were observed. Different operations were carried out on one side only in the vicinity of the zygomaticotemporal suture in 18-25 day old piglets. The animals were sacrificed six months after the operation. The skulls of some of the animals were macerated and subjected to macroscopic and radiological investigation. Both zygomatic arches were removed from each of the remaining animals and used for the production of undecalcified microtome and ground sections. Intravital fluorochrome labelling was used to determine the asymmetric growth at this suture; this is interpreted as being the formation of new bone following passive expansion of the sutural region. After injury or transplantation of the periosteum and after the healing of a narrow bone defect or fracture we observed either a continuous suture from the outset or the formation of a new fissure after osseous regeneration. Similar findings were also made after the transplantation of compact rib fragments into a sutural defect without subsequent bridging of the defect. Only after the transplantation of autologous pieces of cancellous rib into an osseous defect in the sutural region was sutural ossification, accompanied by distinct deformation of the skull observed. As a clinical consequence of this it may be presumed that trauma or operation in the region of a suture has a considerable effect on the growth of the visceral cranium only if it results in premature synostosis.

The effects of mechanical immobilization on sutural development in the growing rabbit

Methyl-2-cyanoacrylate was used to mechanically immobilize the coronal suture unilaterally in a series of New Zealand white rabbits at varying ages. The animals were separated into groups; some were sacrificed at 30 day and some at 60 days postoperatively. Amalgam markers were placed in the parietal and frontal bones across the coronal suture, and were measured immediately after surgery and at the time of sacrifice to confirm mechanical immobility. The animals were studied radiographically and histologically in order to document the presence or absence of sutural bone union. Based on the results of this study, it appears that immobilization of the coronal suture results in the formation of an ectocranial periosteal bone bridge in rabbits less than 8 weeks of age. Bone union was not found in animals older than 8 weeks of age. This age-related difference in response is believed to be due to decreased periosteal depository activity on the ectocranial surface of the calvaria once the brain ceases to expand actively. Furthermore, bone union or synostosis was never seen within or across the internal portion of the sutural ligament. It is suggested, therefore, that sutural immobilization at young ages in the rabbit does not result in sutural synostosis and that the term "periosteal bone bridge" should be used when referring to this biological response.

A note on craniofacial sutural growth

The paper presents and discusses some features of sutural structures. Fibre orientation in sutures seems to be quite variable and associated with minute local growth phenomena. Trabecular patterns in bones, reflecting growth, appear to support the idea of the outside determination of growth. The bevelled and interdigitated structures seen in many sutures may be interpreted as an expedient solution to the problem of fast growth.
