Brief communication: immunologic aspects of human colostrum and milk--a misinterpretation

The decline of adult smallpox in eighteenth-century London

Smallpox was probably the single most lethal disease in eighteenth-century Britain, but was a minor cause of death by the mid-nineteenth century. Although vaccination was crucial to the decline of smallpox, especially in urban areas, from the beginning of the nineteenth century, it remains disputed the extent to which smallpox mortality declined before vaccination. Analysis of age-specific changes in smallpox burials within the large west London parish of St Martin-in-the-Fields revealed a precipitous reduction in adult smallpox risk from the 1770s, and this pattern was duplicated in the east London parish of St Dunstan's. Most adult smallpox victims were rural migrants, and such a drop in their susceptibility is consistent with a sudden increase in exposure to smallpox in rural areas. We investigated whether this was due to the spread of inoculation, or an increase in smallpox transmission, using changes in the age patterns of child smallpox burials. Smallpox mortality rose among infants, and smallpox burials became concentrated at the youngest ages, suggesting a sudden increase in infectiousness of the smallpox virus. Such a change intensified the process of smallpox endemicization in the English population, but also made cities substantially safer for young adult migrants.

Life history theory and the immune system: steps toward a human ecological immunology

Within anthropology and human biology, there is growing interest in immune function and its importance to the ecology of human health and development. Biomedical research currently dominates our understanding of immunology, and this paper seeks to highlight the potential contribution of a population-based, ecological approach to the study of human immune function. Concepts from life-history theory are applied to highlight the major challenges and demands that are likely to shape immune function in a range of ecological contexts. Immune function is a major component of maintenance effort, and since resources are limited, trade-offs are expected between investment in maintenance and other critical life-history functions involving growth and reproduction. An adaptationist, life-history perspective helps make sense of the unusual developmental trajectory of immune tissues, and emphasizes that this complex system is designed to incorporate information from the surrounding ecology to guide its development. As a result, there is substantial population variation in immune development and function that is not considered by current biomedical approaches. In an attempt to construct a framework for understanding this variation, immune development is considered in relation to the competing life-history demands that define gestation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each life stage poses a unique set of adaptive challenges, and a series of hypotheses is proposed regarding their implications for immune development and function. Research in human ecological immunology is in its earliest stages, but this is a promising area of exploration, and one in which anthropology is well-positioned to make important contributions.

Evolutionary process and the ecology of human immune function

Evolutionary principles inform central design features of human immune defenses and provide key insights into this complicated host defense system. This article explores the selection pressures and adaptive responses that have elaborated the immune system over the course of evolution and discusses their implications for understanding contemporary immune development and function. Special attention is given to the challenges posed by diverse, rapidly evolving pathogens and the mammalian response to these challenges. The process of lymphocyte diversity generation and subsequent clonal selection is quintessentially Darwinian: pathogens provide selection pressure that drives differential replication of host immune cell lines, resulting in changes in genetic frequencies within an individual's population of lymphocytes. The immune system also incorporates nongenetic transgenerational processes in the transfer of antibodies from mother to offspring through the placenta and breast milk. The consequences of these observations for human development, health, and the ecology of immune function are considered throughout the life cycle. Specifically, evolutionary processes provide insight into autoimmunity, thymic function, lymphocyte development, infectious disease risk, and lactation. While much work in evolutionary medicine focuses on the discordance between evolved biology and rapidly changing cultural environments, with respect to the immune system, evolutionary processes may be most revealing when applied within individuals. Frequency and chronological distribution of linear enamel hypoplasia in a North American colonial skeletal sample

A skeletal sample of 44 individuals born and raised in early 18th century frontier settlements of Northeastern United States is examined for the frequency and chronological distribution of linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) on the maxillary and mandibular incisors and canines. The prevalence of LEH ranged from 31% on the I2 to 66% on the mandibular C and the mean number of defects ranged from .59 on the I2 to 1.08 on the mandibular C. These frequencies were generally lower than those reported for two later samples; the Monroe County Poorhouse sample and the Hammon-Todd sample. Individuals in these latter two samples were derived from the lowest socioeconomic stratum of their respective populations. Frequency differences are explained within the context of the changing availability of resources that resulted from the rise of industrialization, urbanization, and wage labor which took place during the 18th and 19th centuries. The frequency of LEH was low prior to 1.5 years of age and may result from attrition and/or decreased susceptibility in the relevant area of the crown or from low morbidity or high mortality. Peak frequencies are observed in all age categories ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 years up to 4.0 to 4.5 years and are too late to result from weaning. Instead, they may reflect the susceptibility of nonimmune children to diseases that were common in colonial North America. As the majority of these diseases were not fatal, most victims who survived may have had one or more LEHs as visible proof of their earlier encounter(s).
