Abstract
Age estimations are relevant for pre-trial detention, sentencing in criminal cases and as part of the evaluation in asylum processes to protect the rights and privileges of minors. No current method can determine an exact chronological age due to individual variations in biological development. This study seeks to develop a validated statistical model for estimating an age relative to key legal thresholds (15, 18, and 21 years) based on a skeletal (CT-clavicle, radiography-hand/wrist or MR-knee) and tooth (radiography-third molar) developmental stages. The whole model is based on 34 scientific studies, divided into examinations of the hand/wrist (15 studies), clavicle (5 studies), distal femur (4 studies), and third molars (10 studies). In total, data from approximately 27,000 individuals have been incorporated and the model has subsequently been validated with data from 5,000 individuals. The core framework of the model is built upon transition analysis and is further developed by a combination of a type of parametric bootstrapping and Bayesian theory. Validation of the model includes testing the models on independent datasets of individuals with known ages and shows a high precision with separate populations aligning closely with the model's predictions. The practical use of the complex statistical model requires a user-friendly tool to provide probabilities together with the margin of error. The assessment based on the model forms the medical component for the overall evaluation of an individual's age.

Abstract
Nutritional status significantly impacts linear bone growth. We aimed to determine the relationship between the trajectories of four body composition indicators and pubertal advanced bone age. Trajectories of body mass index z-score (BMI z-score), visceral fat area z-score (VFA z-score), fat mass index z-score (FMI z-score), and fat-free mass index z-score (FFMI z-score) were identified based on three body composition measurements conducted from October 2018 to April 2023 within a pediatric cohort (the PROC study). We assessed pubertal bone age using the Tanner-Whitehouse 3-Chinese Radius-Ulna-Short (TW3-C RUS) method among 1402 primary school children. Children with a trajectory of higher BMI z-score, VFA z-score, FMI z-score, and FFMI z-score since childhood were more likely to have advanced bone age. The risk of advanced bone age was higher in children who were consistently in the high VFA z-score group (odds ratio [OR] = 6.73) or consistently in the high BMI z-score group (OR = 5.57), as compared to those in the low VFA z-score and low BMI z-score groups. Regular monitoring and maintenance of normal VFA during childhood may reduce the risk of advanced bone age at puberty. Furthermore, BMI monitoring is optional, especially in cases where specialized body composition equipment is not available.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maturation of bones in the hand-wrist region varies among individuals of the same age and among world groups. Although some studies from Africa report differences to other ethnic groups, the lack of detailed bone-specific maturity data prevents meaningful comparisons. AIM The aim of this study was to describe bone-specific maturity for developing hand-wrist bones in individuals in Khartoum, Sudan. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The sample was selected from healthy patients attending a dental hospital in Khartoum with known age and ancestry (males = 280, females = 330; aged between 3 and 25 years). Bones were assessed from radiographs of the left hand and wrist after the Greulich and Pyle Atlas (1959). Median ages of attainment for bone stages were calculated using probit analysis for each stage in males and females separately. RESULTS Maturity data for stages of the phalanges, metacarpals, carpals and radius and ulna in males and females are presented. Median ages in females were earlier compared to males for all stages. These results are largely earlier than previously published findings or where these could be calculated. CONCLUSION These results of individual maturity stages of phalanges, metacarpals, carpals and the distal epiphyses of the radius and ulna are useful to assess maturity in growing individuals from Sudan.

Abstract
Recently, a number of authors have claimed that sexual dimorphism in the second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D) is simply dependent on digit length and is an artifact of allometry. The goal of our study is to verify the validity of these assumptions. The study sample comprised 7,582 individuals (3,802 men and 3,780 women) from three large world populations: Europeans (n = 3043), East Africans (n = 2844), and Central Asians (n = 1695). The lengths of the second and fourth digits on both hands were measured. Digit ratios were computed according to standard procedures. Analyses were conducted separately for each hand for the whole sample and in succession for the three large populations. Additionally, we separately tested four age cohorts (≤ 13, 14-18, 19-30, and 31 ≥ years) to test the effect of developmental allometry. The second and fourth digits showed strong positive linear relationships on both hands, and demonstrated an increase with age; digit length in women from the youngest age cohort was longer or equal to that of men, and shorter than men in older age cohorts. However, the 2D:4D magnitude and its sexual dimorphism remained stable throughout the ontogeny. To test for an allometric effect on 2D:4D, the average digit lengths were calculated. Both sex and population origin were permanent reliable predictors of 2D:4D, whereas average digit length was not. Height was applied as another measure of allometric effect on the limited sample (≤ 30 years) from the European population, along with sex and age. No allometric effect was observed in this case. We conclude that sex differences in 2D:4D are not an artifact of allometry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the evidence regarding skeletal maturation in patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) and to investigate whether the skeletal maturation is delayed in these patients. DESIGN Systematic review. METHODS Electronic and manual searches of scientific literature were conducted in 4 databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science). Cohort studies that compared the skeletal maturation of patients with CL/P with that of children without CL/P were eligible for inclusion. The quality of included cohort studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. PATIENTS AND PARTICIPANTS Patients of any sex and ethnicity with CL/P and children without CL/P were included in this systematic review. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Difference in skeletal maturation between patients with CL/P and patients without CL/P. RESULTS Thirteen retrospective cohort studies were included in this systematic review. Ten studies were considered of high quality and 3 were considered of general quality. The results of the included studies comparing skeletal maturation of patients with CL/P and children without CL/P were heterogeneous. CONCLUSION Heterogeneity of skeletal maturation assessment methods, chronological age, sex, cleft type, and race may influence the final results of clinical studies on skeletal maturation in patients with CL/P. Overall, there is limited evidence to determine whether the skeletal maturation level of patients with CL/P is delayed compared to that of normal children. Further studies are needed to determine the skeletal maturation patterns in patients with CL/P.

Abstract
Age estimation of living individuals has become a crucial part of the forensic practice, especially due to the global increase in cross-border migration. The low rate of birth registration in many countries, hence of identification documents of migrants, especially in Africa and Asia, highlights the importance of reliable methods for age estimation of living individuals. Despite the fact that a number of skeletal and dental methods for age estimation have been developed, their main limitation is that they are based on specific reference samples and there is still no consensus among researchers on whether these methods can be applied to all populations. Though this issue remains still unsolved, population information at a glance could be useful for forensic practitioners dealing with such issues. This study aims at presenting a scoping review and mapping of the current situation concerning population data for skeletal (hand-wrist and clavicle) and dental methods (teeth eruption and third molar formation) for age estimation in the living. Two hundred studies on the rate of skeletal maturation and four hundred thirty-nine on the rate of dental maturation were found, covering the period from 1952 and 2020 for a total of ninety-eight countries. For most of the western and central African countries there are currently no data on the rate of skeletal and dental maturation. The same applies to the countries of the Middle East, as well as the eastern European countries, especially as regard the skeletal development.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungDie forensische Altersdiagnostik kann ein entscheidendes Instrument zur Durchführung rechtstaatlicher Verfahren sein. Bei der Altersdiagnostik wird die Entwicklung von Skelett- und Zahnmerkmalen einer zu begutachtenden Person mit Daten von Referenzpopulationen verglichen. Als möglicher Einflussfaktor auf die Altersdiagnose ist der sozioökonomische Status (SES) der zu begutachtenden Person zu berücksichtigen. Allerdings ist die Studienlage zu diesem Einflussfaktor bislang spärlich. Prospektiv wurde der Zusammenhang zwischen der Skelett- bzw. Zahnentwicklung und dem SES innerhalb einer deutschen Studienpopulation aus freiwilligen Teilnehmern ermittelt. Dazu wurde die Entwicklung der medialen Epiphyse des Schlüsselbeins, der distalen Epiphyse des Radius, der distalen Epiphyse des Femurs, der proximalen Epiphyse der Tibia und des linken unteren dritten Molaren bei 294 Frauen und 287 Männern im Alter von 12 bis 24 Jahren mittels 3‑Tesla-Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) untersucht. Zusätzlich wurde der SES der Teilnehmer erfasst. Hierzu wurde das Bildungsniveau der Eltern erfragt. Der Einfluss des SES auf die Einzelmerkmale sowie die Gesamtheit der untersuchten Skelettmerkmale wurde mittels linearer Regression ermittelt. Für alle untersuchten Merkmale und Kombinationen konnte keine Evidenz für einen Zusammenhang festgestellt werden. Es wurde geschlussfolgert, dass sich die Lebensumstände der Studienteilnehmer offenbar nicht ausreichend stark unterschieden, um einen Einfluss des SES auf das Skelettalter darzustellen.

Abstract
Objective Delays in skeletal maturity are related to bone mass and fracture risk in children, but the factors that determine it are unknown. We aimed to identify the association between insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and skeletal maturation before and after growth hormone (GH) treatment. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, we observed 783 short children and adolescents, 229 of whom received GH therapy. Skeletal maturation was assessed based on the difference between bone age (BA) and chronological age (CA) (noted as BA-CA). Anthropometric data and laboratory values were measured, and BA was evaluated using the Greulich and Pyle method. Results The delayed BA group was defined as BA‐CA < −2 SD (n = 457), and the occurrence rate of BA delay was 58.37%. A nonlinear relationship was observed between the IGF-1 standard deviation score (IGF-1 SDS) and BA-CA before and after GH therapy. Before GH therapy, there was a significant positive association between the IGF-1 SDS and BA-CA when the IGF-1 level was greater than -2 SDS (β 0.17, 95% CI 0.08, 027; P < 0.001). However, we did not observe a significant relationship between the IGF-1 SDS and BA-CA when the IGF-1 level was lower than -2 SDS (β 0.07, 95% CI -0.12, 0.26; P = 0.454). After GH therapy, there was a significant positive association between the IGF-1 SDS and BA-CA when the IGF-1 level was lower than 2 SDS (β 0.20, 95% CI 0.12, 028; P < 0.001). However, we did not observe a significant relationship between the IGF-1 SDS and BA-CA when the IGF-1 level was greater than 2 SDS (β -0.03, 95% CI -0.33, 0.27; P = 0.866). Conclusion BA is more delayed in short children and adolescents. There is a nonlinear relationship between IGF-1 and BA maturation in short children before and after GH treatment. These findings suggest that a low level of IGF-1 may contribute to BA delay in short children and adolescents.
