Abstract
A highly enantioselective isothiourea-catalyzed acylative kinetic resolution (KR) of acyclic tertiary alcohols has been developed. Selectivity factors of up to 200 were achieved for the KR of tertiary alcohols bearing an adjacent ester substituent, with both reaction conversion and enantioselectivity found to be sensitive to the steric and electronic environment at the stereogenic tertiary carbinol centre. For more sterically congested alcohols, the use of a recently-developed isoselenourea catalyst was optimal, with equivalent enantioselectivity but higher conversion achieved in comparison to the isothiourea HyperBTM. Diastereomeric acylation transition state models are proposed to rationalize the origins of enantiodiscrimination in this process. This KR procedure was also translated to a continuous-flow process using a polymer-supported variant of the catalyst.

Abstract
Viologens readily thread bis-p-phenylene crown ethers to form [2]pseudorotaxanes. However, the binding of sterically hindered 3,3'-dimethylviologens is very weak. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the additional energy cost of "flattening" is substantial, 55 kJ mol(-1), and prevents the formation of a stable host-guest complex. The structures of [2]pseudorotaxanes determined by X-ray crystallography are in good agreement with the NMR characterisation and DFT results. Their association constants and thermodynamic parameters in solution were measured by using a dilution method and, for the first time, by host-guest nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) correlations. The NOE approach was subsequently applied to study the sterically hindered analogues and it was shown that the binding in 3,3'-dimethyl-N,N-dibenzyl [2]pseudorotaxane is by 8.5 kJ mol(-1) weaker than in its regular analogue. The proposed technique helps to quantify weak interactions in [2]pseudorotaxanes and can be applied to other host-guest complexes.

Abstract
A number of variously monosubstituted 1,n-diaza[n]paracyclophanes (n = 10-12), which show planar chirality and atropisomerism due to hindered rotation about single bonds, were synthesized via a classical route to analyze their stereodynamic properties. Racemic analytes with 10- and 11-membered bridges were resolved by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) in acidic phosphate buffers (pH 2.5-4.5) employing permethylated beta- and gamma-cyclodextrin as chiral additives. Moreover, cyclodextrin mediated CZE was used in a discontinuously driven mode for investigations of the rotational interconversion process of conformationally labile homologues (n = 11). In stopped-flow experiments, after baseline separation enantiomers were partially enantiomerized in situ inside the capillary by heating. The rate constants (k(enan) = 1/2 k(rac)) and rotational energy barriers (Delta G(++)) were determined from the resulting enantiomeric ratios. Energy barriers between 113-126 kJ/mol were found depending on the substituent of the benzene ring and the degree of ionization of the amino groups in bridgehead positions. The energy barriers increased in order of the substituents: NO(2) >> CF(3) > Br > Cl > CH(3) approximately F. In addition, the rotational energy barriers were decreased by approximately 6-8 kJ/mol in the presence of the chiral selector.

Abstract
A series of [n.2]metacyclophanenes (3) and (6) were prepared in good yields by a McMurry cyclization of 1,n-bis(3-acetyl-4-methoxyphenyl)alkanes (2) and 1,3-bis(3-formyl-4-methoxyphenyl)propane (5), respectively. Compounds 3b, 3c exist in the syn-conformation due to the steric repulsion between the methyl groups at the ethano bridge and the methoxy groups at the aromatic rings while compound 6 prefers the anti-conformation typical of [3.2]metacyclophanes. The assignment of syn-conformations has been confirmed by 1H NMR analyses and X-ray diffraction studies. Photoinduced transannular cyclization of [n.2]metacyclophanenes (3) and (6) in the presence of iodine as an oxidant afforded phenanthrene-anellated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Apparently, the rate of the photocyclization of anti-6 was found to be much faster than that of syn-3b and almost completed within 1 h. Thus, the different reactivities for the irradiation of syn- and anti-conformer were observed. The reason for the present preference for the formation of trans-dihydrophenanthrene rather than cis-dihydrophenanthrene as the intermediate might be attributable to the more stable chair form transition state than boat one and the conformational fixation to the chair form in the ground and transition state is possible in the anti-conformer.Key words: cyclophanes, strained molecule, McMurry reaction, CC coupling, conformation analysis, cyclizations, photolysis, transannular reactions, transition states.
