Abstract
Acid hydrolysis of stevioside resulted in a 63% yield of isosteviol (1), which served as a starting material for the preparation of numerous amides. These compounds were tested for cytotoxic activity, employing a panel of human tumor cell lines, and almost all amides were found to be non-cytotoxic. Only the combination of isosteviol, a (homo)-piperazinyl spacer and rhodamine B or rhodamine 101 unit proved to be particularly suitable. These spacered rhodamine conjugates exhibited cytotoxic activity in the sub-micromolar concentration range. In this regard, the homopiperazinyl-spacered derivatives were found to be better than those compounds with piperazinyl spacers, and rhodamine 101 conjugates were more cytotoxic than rhodamine B hybrids.

Abstract
The biosynthesis of knipholone, as an axially chiral phenylanthraquinone, in higher plants was examined by feeding experiments with [13C2]-labeled precursors. [13C2]-Acetate and advanced synthetic intermediates were fed to sterile cultures of Kniphofia pumila (Asphodelaceae), with subsequent NMR analysis on the isolated natural product involving 2D INADEQUATE and SELINQUATE experiments. Due to its uneven number of carbon atoms, and because of its uncertain decarboxylation site, the "northern" part of the molecule (i.e., the chrysophanol portion) might originate from four different cyclization modes. According to the labeling pattern of the product isolated after incorporation, this anthraquinone part of knipholone is formed by the so-called F folding mode (originally established for fungi). The acetophenone part of the molecule, which does not undergo a decarboxylation reaction, originates from four acetate units. The surprising lack of randomization of the intact [13C2] units in this "southern" part reveals the absence of a free symmetric intermediate as initially anticipated. This is in agreement with the intact incorporation of the "authentic" southern molecular portion, 4,6-dihydroxy-2-methoxyacetophenone, while the corresponding symmetrical candidate trihydroxyacetophenone was clearly not incorporated, showing that the O-methylation of the freshly cyclized tetraketide is the step that prevents symmetrization of the acetophenone.

Abstract
Biosyntheses of lambertellols A (1) and B (2) as well as lambertellin (3) were investigated by isotope labeling experiments. Nearly 40% of specific incorporation of [1,2-(13)C(2)]acetate was achieved, and all the carbons in 1 and 2 were labeled. This high incorporation of the labeled acetate was realized by providing INADEQUATE spectra by employing only 0.4 and 0.7 mg of 1 and 2, respectively. Our studies revealed that 1-3 are biogenetically synthesized via loss of two carbons from octameric acetate. A biological assay against Monilinia fructicola revealed those remarkably inhibited hyphal germinations. However, neither of them killed the spores immediately, even in high concentration. These conditions induced the formation of microconidia.

Abstract
Self-assembled lamellar silica-surfactant mesophase composites have been prepared with crystal-like ordering in the silica frameworks using a variety of cationic surfactant species under hydrothermal conditions. These materials represent the first mesoscopically ordered composites that have been directly synthesized with structure-directing surfactants yielding highly ordered inorganic frameworks. One-dimensional solid-state 29Si NMR spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns, and infrared spectra show the progression of molecular organization in the self-assembled mesophases from structures with initially amorphous silica networks into sheets with very high degrees of molecular order. The silicate sheets appear to be two-dimensional crystals, whose structures and rates of formation depend strongly on the charge density of the cationic surfactant headgroups. Two-dimensional solid-state heteronuclear and homonuclear NMR measurements show the molecular proximities of the silica framework sites to the structure-directing surfactant molecules and establish local Si-O-Si bonding connectivities in these materials.
