Abstract
We report expanded porphyrins with pyridine rings and two neighboring carbonyl groups, which allow NiII ions to coordinate to the tripyrrinone-type NNNO coordination structure with Ni-O bonds. The selectivity of tripyrrinone is superior to other pyrrolic or pyridinic cavities of expanded porphyrins. Introduction of α-carbonyl pyridine next to the tripyrrolic conjugated structure is a powerful strategy for regioselective metalation of flexible expanded porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Incorporation of α,β'-pyridine into a [26]hexaphyrin(1.1.0.1.1.0) frame resulted in formation of 29,33-diaza-A,D-di-p-benzi[26]hexaphyrin (A,D-di-p-pyrirubyrin), which acquires a strictly planar conformation with two nitrogen pyridine atoms directed to the center of the macrocyclic core. The mode of α,β'-pyridine incorporation results in efficient 26-electron π-conjugation, as shown by the clear spectroscopic and structural aromatic features. The formation of the trication and tetracation through protonation is accompanied by a conformational flip of one or two pyridinium moieties to result in N-confused or doubly N-confused conformers of the original macrocyclic frame.

Abstract
Free-base octaethylporphyrin (OEP) was converted in two steps (beta,beta'-dihydroxylation and oxidative diol cleavage with concomitant aldol condensation) to the corresponding oxypyriporphyrin. This conversion was previously described to be applicable only to the Ni(II) complex of OEP. Modified diol cleavage conditions made this reaction sequence now applicable to free-base OEP. The single-crystal structure of the resulting free-base oxypyriporphyrin was determined, proving its near-perfect planarity. The reaction sequence can also be applied to oxypyriporphyrin itself, generating the unprecedented bacteriochlorin-type bis(oxypyri)porphyrin as two separable isomers. The ground-state (UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies) and excited-state (transient triplet-triplet absorption, triplet lifetimes, and triplet EPR spectroscopy) photophysical properties of all chromophores are compared with those of OEP, chlorins, and oxochlorins. The pyridone-modified porphyrins possess unique spectroscopic signatures that distinguish them from regular porphyrins or chlorins. The presence of the pyridone moiety alters the ESI(+) collision-induced fragmentation properties of these oxypyriporphyrins only to a minor degree when compared with those of OEP or chlorins, confirming their stability.

Abstract
Synthesis and characterization of inverted porphyrins containing S, Se, and O are reported. A simple 3 + 1 MacDonald-type condensation using modified tripyrrane containing the N-confused ring and diols afforded various N-confused porphyrins 6a-f in 19-30% yield. The single-crystal X-ray structure of 6b shows a ruffled conformation with tilt angles of 21.11 degrees and 31.23 degrees for the N-confused ring and the adjacent pyrrole ring III, respectively, revealing its severe nonplanarity. Significant changes in C alpha-C beta, C beta-C beta, and C alpha-X bond lengths are observed in 6b relative to free thiophene and pyrrole, suggesting the altered delocalization pathway in the modified N-confused porphyrins. The two molecules in the unit cell show a cyclophane-type noncovalent dimer with a face to face orientation of two N-confused pyrrole rings as a result of the presence of weak N-H...N and C-H...N intermolecular hydrogen bonds involving pyrrole-NH, the N atom of the N-confused ring, and the C atom of the pyrrole ring. A detailed 1H and 13C NMR study by 1D and 2D methods allowed assignments of all the peaks in the free base and protonated forms. NMR studies reveal the presence of three different tautomeric forms in solution for 6c in CDCl3 at low temperature. UV-visible studies reveal absorption band shifts upon heteroatom substitution, and the magnitudes of these shifts are dependent on the nature of the heteroatom. In all cases both monoprotonated and diprotonated species have been identified, and on addition of acid, the first proton goes to the outer N2 atom of the N-confused ring.
