Abstract
The first examples of stable phlorin analogues of dithiacorrphycene were synthesized by treating appropriate tetrapyrranes with two equivalents of trifluoroacetic acid in CH2 Cl2 followed by oxidation with p-chloranil. The oxidative coupling of tetrapyrrane resulted in the formation of two unexpected phlorin analogues of dithiacorrphycenes that differed from each other at the meso-sp3 -carbon, and the two macrocycles were easily separated and isolated by column chromatography. The novel macrocycles were confirmed by X-ray crystallography and characterized by HRMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and time-dependent DFT studies. X-ray structure analysis revealed the highly strained and distorted nature of the macrocycles. The macrocycles showed one ill-defined absorption band at λ≈315 nm and a broad band at λ≈530 nm. Because both macrocycles possess two thiophene and two pyrrole rings with one ionizable inner NH, the cation-sensing properties of the phlorin analogues of dithiacorrphycenes have been investigated. The phlorin analogues of dithiacorrphycenes act as specific chemodosimetric sensors for Fe3+ ions by converting phlorin analogues of dithiacorrphycenes into dithiacorrphycene.

Abstract
The synthesis of 23-oxahemiporphycene, the first monooxa analogue of hemiporphycene, a structural isomer of porphyrin, is reported. Its generation under McMurry reaction conditions is surprisingly accompanied by the appearance of a formyl derivative of oxacorrole, 21-oxacorrole-5-carbaldehyde. A mechanism for the formation of the latter is proposed, relying on pinacol rearrangement of titanium pinacolate. The structures of the most stable tautomeric forms are established for both compounds based on IR and NMR spectra combined with DFT calculations. Spectral and photophysical characteristics are compared with those of structurally similar macrocycles. Replacement of one nitrogen by oxygen in hemiporphycene has only a minor impact. In contrast, for corrole it leads to the enhancement of stability and to strongly reduced rates of nonradiative deactivation of the lowest excited singlet state. This is explained by the planarity of oxacorroles, achieved by removing one of the inner hydrogen atoms from the inner cavity. Unusual crystal packing is observed for the protonated form of 23-oxahemiporphycene, which exhibits a π-π stacked columnar alignment of positively charged macrocycle units.

Abstract
A novel helically twisted π-extended corrorin derivative having two boron dipyrrin (BODIPY) moieties at the periphery, a BODIPY DYEmer (6-BF2 ) cross-bridged with π-conjugated dipyrrinylidene unit, was synthesized and characterized. The neutral 6-BF2 is nonfluorescent due to the internal photoinduced charge transfer (CT) character in the excited state as inferred from the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. However, upon protonation, the CT process is suppressed and the species H6-BF2+ becomes near infrared (IR) emissive. With the aid of rigid helical conformations in 6-BF2 , the helical isomers (P- and M-forms) were resolved and their chiroptical property was investigated. The distinct circular dichroism (CD) spectral changes of the enantiomers were observed in the presence of acids, which demonstrates that 6-BF2 can be utilized for potential acid-responsive chiroptical materials.

Abstract
Among seven possible nitrogen-in constitutional isomers of porphyrin only one, porphycene, has been obtained so far in the free, unsubstituted form. Herein, the synthesis of another isomer, parent hemiporphycene (HPc), and its thorough structural, spectral, photophysical, electrochemical, and theoretical characterization are reported. Most of the properties of HPc are intermediate between those of porphyrin and porphycene, as evidenced by the values of inner-cavity dimensions, orbital-energy splittings, absorption coefficients, magnetic circular dichroism parameters, NH-stretching frequencies, fluorescence quantum yields, tautomerization rates, and redox potentials. The largest differences arise with respect to tautomerism, due to the low symmetry of HPc and inequivalence of the four nitrogen atoms that define the inner cavity. Two trans tautomers are observed, separated in energy by about 1 kcal mol-1 . Tautomerization from the higher- to the lower-energy form is detected in the lowest-excited singlet state and occurs at a rate that is about four orders of magnitude lower than that observed for porphycene. Hemiporphycene is a very good model for the investigation of inequivalent intramolecular H-bonds present in one molecule; two such bonds in HPc reveal unusual characteristics, and the bond strength results from the interplay between the N⋅⋅⋅N distance and the N-H-N angle.

Abstract
Electronic structure of the excited states and absorption spectra of free-base azaporphins, azachlorin, and azabacteriochlorin were systematically investigated by SAC-CI calculations. Aza-substitution at the meso position affects the orbital energy of the next-HOMO, and the transition dipole moment enlarges as the number of the substitution increases. Some of the aza-substitutions dramatically affect the direction of the transition dipole, due to reduction of the molecular symmetry, which was studied in detail by a decomposition analysis of the transition dipole moment. Tetraza-substitution in chlorin and bacteriochlorin increases the oscillator strength more than that of tetrazaporphin. The mechanism underlying these changes originates mainly from the relaxation of near-degeneracy in the main configurations. These findings would be useful for the application to the molecular design of the excited states.

Abstract
Excited states of free-base porphyrin isomers, porphycene (Pc), corrphycene (Cor), and hemiporphycene (hPc), were studied by the Symmetry-Adapted Cluster (SAC)/SAC-Configuration Interaction (CI) method. The absorption peaks of the porphyrin isomers were assigned on the basis of the SAC-CI spectra. The X, Y, X', and Y' bands of the porphyrin isomers, which have weak intensities, are identified. The differences in the Q-band absorptions among the isomers were clearly explained by the four-orbital model. In Cor and hPc, the wave function of the B-band corresponds to the mixture of the four-orbital excitations and the optically forbidden excitation of free-base porphin (P), due to the molecular symmetry lowering in the isomers. The B-band character is described by the five-orbital model in Pc and the six-orbital model in Cor and hPc. Two tetrazaporphycenes and two ring-extended (dibenzo) porphycenes were designed, and the Q-band transition moment was successfully controlled. These examples show that the control of the four-orbital energy levels is the guiding principle for pigment design in porphyrin compounds.
