Abstract
The 20π porphyrinoids are immediate higher homologues of 18π porphyrins and differ from porphyrins in aromaticity which in turn affects the structure, properties and chemical reactivities. Research over the years indicated that the 20π porphyrinoids can be stabilized as non-aromatic/anti-aromatic or Mobius aromatic macrocycles using different strategies such as core-modification of porphyrins, non-metal/metal complexation of porphyrins, peripheral modification of porphyrins and expanded porphyrinoids. The structural properties such as aromaticity of the macrocycle can be controlled by choosing the right synthetic strategy. This review will provide an overview of the development in the chemistry of 20π porphyrinoids giving emphasize on the synthesis, structure and electronic properties of these macrocycles which have huge potential for various applications.

Abstract
This Review outlines the progress in the field of synthetic expanded carbaporphyrinoids. The evolution of this topic is demonstrated with expanded porphyrin-inspired systems with a variety of incorporated entities that introduce one or more carbon atoms into the cavity. The discussion starts with platyrins-the macrocycles that were identified as parent molecules of not only the expanded carbaporphyrinoids, but the carbaporphyrinoid class in general. After historic considerations, the plethora of expanded porphyrin-like macrocycles containing N-confused or neo-confused pyrrole motifs and different carbocyclic subunits are presented. Special emphasis is given to applications of expanded carbaporphyrinoids in different areas, including organometallic chemistry, switching systems, or aromaticity, concluding with the demonstration of a covalent cage based on an expanded carbaporphyrinoid.

Abstract
A series of meso-trifluoromethyl-substituted expanded porphyrins, including N-fused [24]pentaphyrin 3, [28]hexaphyrin 4, [32]heptaphyrin 5, [46]decaphyrin 6, and [56]dodecaphyrin 7, were synthesized by means of an acid-catalyzed one-pot condensation reaction of 2-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxyethyl)pyrrole (1) as the first examples bearing meso-alkyl substituents. Besides these products, porphyrin 2 and two calix[5]phyrins 8 and 9 were also obtained. [28]Hexaphyrin 4 was quantitatively oxidized to [26]hexaphyrin 14 with MnO(2). These expanded porphyrins have been characterized by mass spectrometry, (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopy, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The single-crystal structures have been determined for 3, 4, 6, 7, and 14. The N-fused [24]pentaphyrin 3 displays a distorted structure containing a tricyclic fused moiety that is similar to those of meso-aryl-substituted counterparts, whereas 8 and 9 are indicated to take roughly planar conformations with an inverted pyrrole opposite to the sp(3)-hybridized meso-carbon atom. Both [28]- and [26]hexaphyrins 4 and 14 have figure-of-eight structures. Solid-state structures of the decaphyrin 6 and dodecaphyrin 7 are remarkable, exhibiting a crescent conformation and an intramolecular two-pitch helical conformation, respectively.

Abstract
The twofold Heck reaction of the vinylpyrroles 3a and 3b with the iodobenzenes 4a-c led to the linear pyrrole oligomers 5, 6, and 7. The synthesis of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical oligomers, such as 10a and 10b, was also accomplished by a Heck reaction of 8 and 9 and by a Heck reaction of 3a and 11 followed by a Wittig reaction and a second Heck reaction with 8. The pentacyclic oligomers 14 and 19 were prepared by a twofold Heck reaction of 13 with 4 and by a twofold Heck reaction of 15 with 16 followed by a Wittig reaction and a twofold Heck reaction with 8.

Abstract
In the 2-deoxy-D-ribose/methyl 4-aminobutyrate Maillard system a trapped N-substituted 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyrrole is one of the major products. However, nontrapped representatives of this type of compound were hitherto not found in other Maillard model systems, indicating their extraordinary reactivity. Model experiments with 2-deoxy-D-ribose/methylamine enabled the detection of N-methyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)pyrrole (1) and some derived linear oligomers (2, 3) as minor components. Consequently, 1 was synthesized and its oligomerization studied under very mild acidic conditions. The deformylated dimeric bis(N-methyl-2-pyrrolyl)methane (2) and trimeric N-methyl-2,5-bis(N-methyl-2-pyrrolylmethyl)pyrrole (3) were characterized by GC/MS and NMR. Higher regular oligomers up to 6 N-methyl-2-pyrrolylmethyl units as well as corresponding dehydro-oligomers up to 12 units were identified by MALDI-TOF-MS. A complementary experiment starting with N-methyl-2-hydroxy[(13)C]methylpyrrole ([(13)CH(2)OH]-1) confirmed the structure and the oligomerization pathway. The possible significance of this type of model oligomer for the melanoidin formation in Maillard reactions is discussed. The antioxidative activity of the isolated dimer and trimer was tested in Fe(III)-thiocyanate and DPPH assays.
