Abstract
The preparation of optically pure secondary alcohols in the presence of catalysts based on chiral ligands derived from monoterpenes, such as pinenes, limonenes and carenes, is reviewed. A wide variety of these ligands has been synthesized and used in several catalytic reactions, including hydrogen transfer, C-C bond formation via addition of organozinc compounds to aldehydes, hydrosilylation, and oxazaborolidine reduction, leading to high activities and enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Chiral guanidine catalysts share common characteristics such as high pK(a) values and dual hydrogen-bonding modes of activation, and high catalytic activities and enantioselectivities can often be achieved. The utilization of guanidines as catalysts has been growing at a steady pace. In the past few years, it has attracted tremendous attention through several landmark achievements. This article highlights the development of chiral guanidine catalysis in asymmetric synthesis.

Abstract
A novel bis-thiourea BINAM-based catalyst for the asymmetric aza-Henry reaction has been developed. This catalyst promotes the reaction of N-Boc imines with nitroalkanes to afford β-nitroamines with good yields and high enantioselectivities. This catalyst has the advantage that it can be prepared in a single step from commercially available materials. A model is proposed for the catalyst action where the both components of the reaction are activated simultaneously by hydrogen bonding. Regardless of the mechanism, the success of the present catalyst demonstrates the potential of bis-thioureas as an interesting class of relatively unexplored catalysts.

Abstract
Enantioenriched 2,3,4-trisubstituted thiochromanes have been synthesized by using a cupreine-catalyzed tandem Michael addition-Henry reaction between 2-mercaptobenzaldehydes and β-nitrostyrenes. Good diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities were obtained for the title compounds, which may be further improved through a single recrystallization (up to 98% de and> 99% ee).

Abstract
Catalytic enantio- and diastereoselective nitroaldol reactions were explored by using designed guanidine-thiourea bifunctional organocatalysts under mild and operationally simple biphasic conditions. These catalytic asymmetric reactions have a broad substrate generality with respect to the variety of aldehydes and nitroalkanes. Based on this catalytic nitroaldol process, straightforward syntheses of cytoxazone and 4-epi-cytoxazone were achieved. These catalytic nitroaldol reactions require KI as an additive for highly asymmetric induction; it operates by inhibiting the retro mode of the reaction. On the basis of studies of structure and catalytic-activity relationships, a plausible guanidine-thiourea cooperative mechanism and a transition state of the catalytic reactions are proposed. Drastic substituent effects on the catalytic properties of this catalyst may lead to the development of new chiral surfactants.

Abstract
Bifunctional thiourea 1a catalyzes aza-Henry reaction of nitroalkanes with N-Boc-imines to give syn-beta-nitroamines with good to high diastereo- and enantioselectivity. Apart from the catalyst, the reaction requires no additional reagents such as a Lewis acid or a Lewis base. The N-protecting groups of the imines have a determining effect on the chirality of the products, that is, the reaction of N-Boc-imines gives R adducts as major products, whereas the same reaction of N-phosphonoylimines furnishes the corresponding S adducts. Various types of nitroalkanes bearing aryl, alcohol, ether, and ester groups can be used as nucleophiles, providing access to a wide range of useful chiral building blocks in good yield and high enantiomeric excess. Synthetic versatility of the addition products is demonstrated by the transformation to chiral piperidine derivatives such as CP-99,994.
