Bridging Phosphanes: Exotic or Versatile Binucleating Ligands?

Coinage Metal Complexes of Bis(quinoline-2-ylmethyl)phenylphosphine-Simple Reactions Can Lead to Unprecedented Results

The different coordination behavior of the flexible yet sterically demanding, hemilabile P,N ligand bis(quinoline-2-ylmethyl)phenylphosphine (bqmpp) towards selected CuI , AgI and AuI species is described. The resulting X-ray crystal structures reveal interesting coordination geometries. With [Cu(MeCN)4 ]BF4 , compound 1 [Cu2 (bqmpp)2 ](BF4 )2 is obtained, wherein the copper(I) atoms display a distorted square planar and square pyramidal geometry. The steric demand and π-stacking of the ligand allow for a short Cu⋅⋅⋅Cu distance (2.588(9) Å). CuI complex 2 [Cu4 Cl3 (bqmpp)2 ]BF4 contains a rarely observed Cu4 Cl3 cluster, probably enabled by dichloromethane as the chloride source. In the cluster, even shorter Cu⋅⋅⋅Cu distances (2.447(1) Å) are present. The reaction of Ag[SbF6 ] with the ligand leads to a dinuclear compound (3) in solution as confirmed by 31 P{1 H} NMR spectroscopy. During crystallization, instead of the expected phosphine complex 3, a tris(quinoline-2-ylmethyl)bisphenyl-phosphine (tqmbp) compound [Ag2 (tqmbp)2 ](SbF6 )2 4 is formed by elimination of quinaldine. The Au(I) compound [Au2 (bqmpp)2 ]PF6 (5) is prepared as expected and shows a linear arrangement of two phosphine ligands around AuI .

Beyond Classical Coordination Chemistry: The First Case of a Triply Bridging Phosphine Ligand

The first example of a triply bridging (μ₃ -P) phosphine ligand has been discovered in the crown-shaped [Cu₃ (μ₂ -Hal)₃ L] (Hal=Cl, Br, or I) complexes supported by tris[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]phosphine (L). Theoretical analysis completely confirms the observed μ₃ -P-bridging pattern, revealing the interaction of the same lone pair of phosphorus with three valence 4s-orbitals of Cu atoms. The presented complexes exhibit outstanding blue phosphorescence (λ_em =442-465 nm) with the quantum efficiency reaching 100 %. The complex [Cu₃ (μ₂ -I)₃ L] also exhibits remarkable thermo- and mechanochromic luminescence resulting in a sharp change in the emission colour upon external stimuli. These findings essentially contribute to coordination chemistry of the pnictine ligands.

Can Coordination-Driven Supramolecular Self-Assembly Reactions Be Conducted from Fully Aliphatic Linkers?

The reaction between a preassembled Cu^I bimetallic molecular clip with a short intermetallic distance and a series of fully aliphatic cyano-capped ditopic linkers with increasing lengths was investigated. It is shown that, depending on the length of the ditopic linkers, the rational design of unprecedented supramolecular compact metallacycles containing fully aliphatic walls is possible. The specific preorganized molecular arrangement of the molecular clip used favors stabilizing interlinker London dispersion interactions, which allow, as the length of the linkers increases, the selective formation of discrete compact metallacycles at the expense of 1D coordination polymers. The generalizability of this approach was demonstrated by the reaction of fully aliphatic cyano-capped linkers with two other types of preassembled Cu^I bimetallic molecular clips that also had short intermetallic distances.

Chiral and extended π-conjugated bis(2-pyridyl)phospholes as assembling N,P,N pincers for coordination-driven synthesis of supramolecular [2,2]paracyclophane analogues

Chiral, π-conjugated 3,4-butano-1-phenyl-2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)phosphole derivatives 1a(2,2') and 1a(3) with chiral trans-1,2-diol moieties and fused pinene derivatives, respectively, were prepared from the corresponding chiral diynes by using the Fagan-Nugent method. Their UV/Vis absorption and chiroptical properties (optical rotation and circular dichroism) were studied. Their behavior as N,P,N chelates towards coordination of Cu(I) and formation of chiral supramolecular assemblies with π-conjugated ditopic dicyano ligands was investigated. Chiral C(2)-symmetric rectangles that are [2,2]paracyclophane analogues were obtained, as demonstrated by X-ray crystallography. During the course of this study, the first stable water-soluble phosphole derivative (1a(2)·2 HCl) was prepared. Furthermore, achiral 3,4-butano-1-phenyl-2,5-bis(aza[4]helicene)phosphole 1a(4) was synthesized and displays extended π conjugation. A supramolecular rectangle was obtained by coordination to Cu(I) and assembly with a dicyano stilbene. This coordination-driven supramolecular assembly contains a total of four aza[4]helicene moieties and displays two types of π-π stacking interactions in the solid state, that is, between two helicene moieties and between one helicene and a bridging dicyano ligand. All the supramolecular arrangements are discussed by comparing them with previous work on the parent 3,4-butano-1-phenyl-2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)phosphole.
