Abstract
Presented is a light-promoted C-C bond forming reaction yielding sulfone and phosphate derivatives at room temperature in the absence of metals or photoredox catalyst. This transformation proceeds in neat conditions through an auto-oxidation mechanism which is maintained through the leaching of trace amounts of O2 as sole green oxidant.

Al-Azmi A, John E. Synthesis and characterization of novel tricyanofuran hydrazone probe: solvatochromism, density-functional theory calculation and selective fluorescence, and colorimetric determination of iron (III). LUMINESCENCE 2021; 36:1220-1230. [PMID: 33792161 DOI: 10.1002/bio.4047] [Citation(s) in RCA: 11] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/24/2020] [Revised: 02/16/2021] [Accepted: 03/28/2021] [Indexed: 12/14/2022]
Abstract
A tricyanofuran hydrazone (TCFH) spectroscopic probe was produced to visually recognize Fe(III) ions in aqueous environments. The synthesis was started by reacting tricyanofuran with 4-aminophenol diazonium chloride. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic analyses. TCFH showed distinctive solvatochromic behaviour in various organic polar solvents due to intramolecular charge transfer. Its behaviour towards sensing Fe(III) was studied using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The sensing behaviours of the proposed probe for other metal ions, namely Co(II), Cr(III), Mg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Ba(II), Hg(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ca(II), Al(III), Na(I) and K(I), were also investigated, but no spectral changes were observed, indicating the probe's potential use as a highly selective and Fe(III)-sensitive colorimetric and fluorescent chemical sensor. The TCFH probe using EtOH/H2 O (5:1; v/v) served as a colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for identification of Fe(III) by the naked eye owing to both its high sensitivity and selectivity towards Fe(III) compared with the other examined metal ions. The proposed TCFH probe can therefore be utilized as an effective spectroscopic sensor for Fe(III). Both colorimetric and fluorescence recognition of the analyte depended on the concentration of Fe(III) ions and was accomplished at a pH of 7. A rapid colour change from yellow to red occurred when an aqueous solution of Fe(III) ions was added. The intensity of the colour increased at higher Fe(III) concentrations. Cyclic voltammetry measurements in the dimethylformamide solvent indicated a nonreversible redox potential. This study also explained the possible mechanisms for both solvatochromism and the detection of Fe(III) through TCFH-Fe(III) complex formation. The binding constant of the generated TCFH-Fe(III) complex was explored. Computational modelling was conducted to explain the deprotonation-triggered changes that occur in the photophysical properties of TCFH dyes.

Abstract
Given the broad spectrum of biological uses of heteroaryl-acrylonitrile derivatives, it is necessary to find simple methods to synthesize and diversify this family of compounds. We report a stereoselective synthesis of a series of new (E)-2-(1H-indole-3-ylcarbonyl)-3-heteroaryl-acrylonitriles (3a–3i) obtained from 3-(cyanoacetyl)indole and heteroaryl-aldehydes under microwave-assisted Knoevenagel reaction at 300 W of potency and 100°C. The desired derivatives (3a–3i) were obtained with variable yields (30–94%) and time reactions (8–90 min). All the heteroaryl-acrylonitriles were characterized by physicoanalytical techniques such IR, 1H, 13C NMR, and electrospray mass spectrometry.

Abstract
α-Fluorocarbanions are key intermediates in nucleophilic fluoroalkylation reactions. Although frequently discussed, the origin of the fluorine effect on the reactivity of α-fluorinated CH acids has remained largely unexplored. We have now investigated the kinetics of a series of reactions of α-substituted carbanions with reference electrophiles to elucidate the effects of α-F, α-Cl, and α-OMe substituents on the nucleophilic reactivities of carbanions.

Abstract
Quinones are common stoichiometric reagents in organic chemistry. Para-quinones with high reduction potentials, such as DDQ and chloranil, are widely used and typically promote hydride abstraction. In recent years, many catalytic applications of these methods have been achieved by using transition metals, electrochemistry, or O2 to regenerate the oxidized quinone in situ. Complementary studies have led to the development of a different class of quinones that resemble the ortho-quinone cofactors in copper amine oxidases and mediate the efficient and selective aerobic and/or electrochemical dehydrogenation of amines. The latter reactions typically proceed by electrophilic transamination and/or addition-elimination reaction mechanisms, rather than hydride abstraction pathways. The collective observations show that the quinone structure has a significant influence on the reaction mechanism and has important implications for the development of new quinone reagents and quinone-catalyzed transformations.

Abstract
Electrochemistry provides a powerful tool for the late-stage functionalization of complex lactams. A two-stage protocol for converting lactams, many of which can be prepared through the intramolecular Schmidt reaction of keto azides, is presented. In the first step, anodic oxidation in MeOH using a repurposed power source provides a convenient route to lactams bearing a methoxy group adjacent to nitrogen. Treatment of these intermediates with a Lewis acid in dichloromethane permits the regeneration of a reactive acyliminium ion that is then reacted with a range of nucleophilic species.

Abstract
In the presence of catalytic amounts of CBr4 (a metal-free mediator), an unexpected oxidative dehydrogenative coupling of isochromans with ketones occurred to construct new Csp3–Csp3 bonds. The reactions were performed under simple solvent-free aerobic conditions.

Abstract
A trityl ion mediated C-H functionalization of ethers with a wide range of nucleophiles at ambient temperature has been developed. The reaction displays high chemoselectivity and good functional group tolerance. The protocol also exhibits excellent regio- and diastereoselectivities for the unsymmetric ethers, thus stereoselectively generating highly functionalized disubstituted 2,5-trans tetrahydrofurans (THF), 2,6-trans tetrahydropyrans (THP), 2,6-trans dihydropyrans (DHP), and 1,3-trans isochromans, and highlighting the capacity of the protocol in complex molecule synthesis.

Abstract
A facile oxidative coupling of α-carbonyl radicals to 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) for the synthesis of 2,3-dicyanofurans and thiophenes starting from readily available β-diketones, simple ketones, and β-keto thioamides in up to 95% yield in one step was developed. Mechanistic investigations revealed that a radical process could be involved in this transformation, and a water promoted C-C bond cleavage pathway is proposed for the formation of 2,3-dicyanofurans and thiophenes.

Abstract
Over the last decade, substantial research has led to the introduction of an impressive number of efficient procedures which allow the selective construction of CC bonds by directly connecting two different CH bonds under oxidative conditions. Common to these methodologies is the generation of the reactive intermediates in situ by activation of both CH bonds. This strategy was introduced by the group of Li as cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) and discloses waste-minimized synthetic alternatives to classic coupling procedures which rely on the use of prefunctionalized starting materials. This Review highlights the recent progress in the field of cross-dehydrogenative C sp 3C formations and provides a comprehensive overview on existing procedures and employed methodologies.
