Abstract
A variety of functionalized triarylmethane and 1,1-diarylalkane derivatives were prepared via a transition-metal-free, one-pot and two-step procedure, involving the reaction of various benzal diacetates with organozinc reagents. A sequential cross-coupling is enabled by changing the solvent from THF to toluene, and a two-step SN 1-type mechanism was proposed and evidenced by experimental studies. The synthetic utility of the method is further demonstrated by the synthesis of several biologically relevant molecules, such as an anti-tuberculosis agent, an anti-breast cancer agent, a precursor of a sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator, and a FLAP inhibitor.

Abstract
A "branching-folding" synthetic strategy that affords a range of diverse cyclic benzo-sulfonamide scaffolds is presented. Whereas different annulation reactions on common ketimine substrates build the branching phase of the scaffold synthesis, a common hydrogenative ring-expansion method, facilitated by an increase of the ring-strain during the branching phase, led to sulfonamides bearing medium-sized rings in a folding pathway. Cell painting assay was successfully employed to identify tubulin targeting sulfonamides as novel mitotic inhibitors.

Abstract
Although BINOL-derived phosphoric acids are among the most widely used chiral Brønsted acid organocatalysts, their structures are mostly limited to 3,3'-disubstituted ones and simple 3-mono-substituted ones without any polar functionalities on the 3-substituent have not been used in highly enantioselective reactions. This work reports such 3-mono-substituted analogues as effective organocatalysts in direct highly enantioselective Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation of N-unprotected α-ketiminoester. The origin of the observed high enantioselectivity with the 3-mono-substituted catalyst is also discussed.

Abstract
An asymmetric synthesis of diheteroarylalkanals through one-pot dienamine and Friedel-Crafts reaction is presented. The reaction tolerates a large variety of substituents at different positions of the starting aldehyde and also in the indole nucleophile, and a range of diheterocyclic alkanals can be achieved. Furthermore, we have studied the antiproliferative activity of these new compounds in representative cancer tumor cell lines.

Abstract
The first enantioselective synthesis of pyrrolyl-substituted triarylmethanes has been accomplished using a novel imidodiphosphoric acid catalyst, which is derived from two (R)-BINOL frameworks with different 3,3'-substituents. This strategy was also expanded to the synthesis of bis(indolyl)-substituted triarylmethanes with high enantioselectivities, which could only be obtained with moderate ee values in previous reports. These two efficient Friedel-Crafts alkylation processes feature low catalyst loading, broad functional group compatibilities, and the potential to provide practical pathways for the synthesis of enantioenriched bioactive triarylmethanes.

Abstract
Coupling with inversion: Chiral diarylmethanol derivatives undergo a stereospecific nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction with aryl Grignard reagents (see scheme). The reaction proceeds with inversion of configuration and high enantiospecificity. The method has been applied to the asymmetric synthesis of a triarylmethane-based anti-cancer compound.

Abstract
The FeCl(3) x 6H(2)O-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts arylation reactions of N-sulfonyl aldimines or sulfonamidesulfones with electron-rich arenes and heteroarenes, which lead to the formation of triarylmethanes and bis-heteroarylarylmethanes, are developed. The use of mild reaction conditions, low catalytic loading, high yield, and single step synthesis are the advantages of the present procedure.

Abstract
A variety of molybdenum complexes catalyze Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation reactions of benzene derivatives with alkenes and alcohols in the presence of an organic oxidant, o-chloranil. The utilization of [Mo(CO)(6)] and two equivalents of o-chloranil catalytically furnished the hydroarylation product of norbornene with p-xylene at 80 degrees C, whereas [Cr(CO)(6)] and [W(CO)(6)] failed to catalyze the same reaction, thus indicating the importance of the molybdenum source. The best results were obtained when a molybdenum(II) complex [CpMoCl(CO)(3)] (Cp=cyclopentadienyl) was used as a precatalyst. The hydroarylation reactions also took place with styrenes, cyclohexenes, and 1-hexene as olefin substrates. The electrophilic-substitution mechanism was proposed on the basis of the ortho/para selectivities and the Markovnikov selectivities observed for the hydroarylation products. Our hypothesis was further corroborated by the fact that in the presence of the [CpMoCl(CO)(3)]/o-chloranil catalytic system, secondary, benzylic, or allylic alcohols participated in the alkylation of benzenes with similar selectivities.
