Controlled Self-Assembly Behavior of an Amphiphilic Bisporphyrin–Bipyridinium–Palladium Complex: From Multibilayer Vesicles to Hollow Capsules

Platinized spherical supramolecular nanoassemblies of a porphyrin: facile synthesis and excellent catalytic recyclability

Porphyrin-based supramolecular nanoassemblies of a spherical morphology have been attracting broad interest owing to their wide application possibilities in numerous fields of paramount significance. Most of the existing assembly protocols, however, either suffer from the requirement of elaborately-designed yet tediously-synthesized ad hoc porphyrins, the use of surfactant templates, or accurate consideration of the experimental parameters etc. The initiation of a facile surfactant-free fabrication protocol performable under ambient conditions using commercial porphyrins as building blocks is strongly desired. We herein report that a commercial metal-free porphyrins, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin (TPPNH2), could be facilely organized to form well-defined discrete spherical nanoassemblies at room temperature by means of a simple reprecipitation method. We further find that the as-manufactured TPPNH2 nanospheres could work as photocatalysts towards the reduction of potassium tetrachloroplatinate(ii), leading to their self-platinization and the production of platinum/porphyrin nanosphere nanocomposites, wherein ultrathin Pt nanoparticles of a size of ca. 3 nm are immobilized on the porphyrin nanospheres. Significantly, by taking the advantage of their easy sedimentation from aqueous suspensions, we show that the as-produced composites could serve as qualified heterogeneous nanocatalysts in terms of their excellent catalytic stability and recyclability towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, where the catalytic reactivity exhibits only trivial changes even after the reactions have been repeated 8 times continuously. Taking into account the general concerns of porphyrins- and Pt-based nanostructures, this might provide a facile method for the construction of spherical porphyrin nanostructures with self-platinization capability. Meanwhile, considering the high cost and scarcity of Pt, our nanocomposites with excellent stability and recyclability likely have a bright future of potential uses.

Supramolecular nanoassemblies of an amphiphilic porphyrin-cyclodextrin conjugate and their morphological transition from vesicle to network

An amphiphilic compound, 5-(4'-dodecyloxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tri(permethyl-β-CD)-modified Zn(II)-porphyrin (1; β-CD = β-cyclodextrin), was synthesized by means of the click reaction of an alkylated Zn-porphyrin derivative with 6-deoxy-6-azidopermethyl-β-CD. The complexation between 1 and tetrasodium tetraphenylporphyrintetrasulfonate (5) with different molar ratios led to the formation of two distinctly different nanoarchitectures, which were proven to be vesicle and network aggregates, respectively, by using dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. On the basis of the results of the time-dependent TEM studies, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopic measurements, we have determined that the mechanism of the morphology transition from vesicles to networks is controlled by the stepwise complexation of 1 with 5. Furthermore, these supramolecular nanoarchitectures show the controlled- release property of doxorubicin as potential candidates for drug delivery.

Design and assembly of rotaxane-based molecular switches and machines

Mechanically interlocked molecules, such as catenanes and rotaxanes, are at the heart of the development of molecular machines chemistry. They are able to self-organize, self-assemble, and self-control themselves into new materials with potential application as molecular devices. In this review, an overview of some recent progress on molecular machines is given, including new methodologies for their synthesis and self-assembly and their recent applications as dual or multilevel fluorescent molecular switches, as potential sensors, and even as a molecular-level transporter. In one development, a molecular machine containing a charge-transfer chromophore was designed to generate controllable aggregate structures through the reversible movement of a macrocycle over a thread; this was done in order to better understand the application of a molecular shuttle in solid state. Light is shed on how the novel properties and functions of molecular machines are extended, and examples of the ways in which molecular machines have been applied to the design and process of intelligentized systems are provided.

Morphology transformation via pH-triggered self-assembly of peptides

Three flexible peptides (P1: (C(17)H(35)CO-NH-GRGDG)(2)KG; P2: (Fmoc-GRGDG)(2)KG; P3: (CH(3)CO-NH-GRGDG)(2)KG) self-assembled to form a variety of morphologically distinct assemblies at different pHs. P1 formed nanofibers at pH 3, then self-assembled into nanospheres with pH up to 6 and further changed to lamellar structures when the pH value was further increased to 10. P2 aggregated into an entwined network structure at pH 3, and then self-assembled into well-defined nanospheres, lamellar structures, and vesicles via adjusting the pH value. However, P3 did not self-assemble into well-ordered nanostructures, presumably due to the absence of a large hydrophobic group. The varying self-assembly behaviors of the peptides at different pHs are attributed to molecular conformational changes. These self-assembled supramolecular materials might contribute to the development of new peptide-based biomaterials.

Self-assembly of discrete homochiral, helical, hydrogen-bonded nanocages: from vesicles to microspheres and tubules capable of gelating solvents

The chiral tris-monodentate imidazolinyl ligands 1 a-c exhibit a strong tendency to form the discrete, helical [2+3] nanocages 3 ([1(2).2(3)]) with tartaric acids 2. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra and theoretical calculations reveal that supramolecular handedness of capsulelike architectures is determined only by the chirality of the imidazolinyl ligands rather than tartaric acids. The chirality of imidazolinyl ligands is transferred to the helicity of the complexes through the directed hydrogen bonds between the N3 atom of imidazoline rings and the carboxyl of tartaric acids. These hydrogen-bonded nanocages can spontaneously self-assemble into spherical vesicles, during which the hydrogen bonding that arises from the hydroxyl groups of tartaric acids plays a crucial issue. The vesicles formed by [{(S,S,S)-1 a}(2)(2(L))(3)] (3 a) may further evolve into microspheres that gelate organic solvents after being aged at -20 degrees C for 24 h, and can also be unprecedentedly transformed to tubular assemblies capable of rigidifying the solvents when subjected to ultrasound irradiation.
