Abstract
Chirality switching of self-assembled molecular structures is of potential interest for designing functional materials but is restricted by the strong interaction between the embedded molecules. Here, we report on an unusual approach based on reversible chirality changes of self-assembled oligomers using variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy supported by quantum mechanical calculations. Six functionalized diazomethanes each self-assemble into chiral wheel-shaped oligomers on Ag(111). At 130 K, a temperature far lower than expected, the oligomers change their chirality even though the molecules reside in an embedded self-assembled structure. Each chirality change is accompanied by a slight center-of-mass shift. We show how the identical activation energies of the two processes result from the interplay of the chirality change with surface diffusion, findings that open the possibility of implementing various functional materials from self-assembled supramolecular structures.

Abstract
Tailored nano-spaces can control enantioselective adsorption and molecular motion. We report on the spontaneous assembly of a dynamic system-a rigid kagome network with each pore occupied by a guest molecule-employing solely 2,6-bis(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine-4-carboxylic acid on Ag(111). The network cavity snugly hosts the chemically modified guest, bestows enantiomorphic adsorption and allows selective rotational motions. Temperature-dependent scanning tunnelling microscopy studies revealed distinct anchoring orientations of the guest unit switching with a 0.95 eV thermal barrier. H-bonding between the guest and the host transiently stabilises the rotating guest, as the flapper on a raffle wheel. Density functional theory investigations unravel the detailed molecular pirouette of the guest and how the energy landscape is determined by H-bond formation and breakage. The origin of the guest's enantiodirected, dynamic anchoring lies in the specific interplay of the kagome network and the silver surface.

Abstract
The working mechanism including the photoisomerization and thermal isomerization steps of a chiral N-alkyl imine-based motor synthesized by Lehn et al. are revealed by MS-CASPT2//CASSCF and MS-CASPT2//(TD-)DFT methods. For the photoisomerization process of the imine-based motor, it involves both the bright (π,π*) state and the dark (n,π*) state. In addition, the MECI has similar geometry and energy to the minimum of the S1 state, which shows that the process is barrierless and keeps the unidirectionality of rotation well; the result confirms the imine-based motor is a good candidate for a light-driven molecular rotary motor. For the thermal isomerization process of the imine-based motor, there are two even isomerization paths: one with the mechanism of the in-plane N inversion, the energy barriers of which are 29.6 kcal mol-1 at MS3-CASPT2//CAM-B3LYP level and 29.2 kcal mol-1 at MS3-CASPT2//CASSCF level; the other with the mechanism of ring inversion of the cycloheptatriene moiety, with energy barriers of 28.1 kcal mol-1 at MS3-CASPT2//CAM-B3LYP level and 18.1 kcal mol-1 at MS3-CASPT2//CASSCF level. According to the structural feature of the stator moiety, the imine molecule can be used as a two-step or a four-step light-driven rotary motor.

Abstract
Scanning probe instruments in conjunction with a very low temperature environment have revolutionized the ability of building, functionalizing, and analysing two dimensional interfaces in the last twenty years. In addition, the availability of fast, reliable, and increasingly sophisticated methods to simulate the structure and dynamics of these interfaces allow us to capture even very small effects at the atomic and molecular level. In this review we shall focus largely on metal surfaces and organic molecular compounds and show that building systems from the bottom up and controlling the physical properties of such systems is no longer within the realm of the desirable, but has become day to day reality in our best laboratories.

Abstract
Using temperature-programmed desorption, supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, a comprehensive overview of the main reactions of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin (2HTPP) on Cu(111) as a function of coverage and temperature is obtained. Three reactions were identified: metalation with Cu substrate atoms, stepwise partial dehydrogenation, and finally complete dehydrogenation. At low coverage the reactions are independent of coverage, but at higher coverage metalation becomes faster and partial dehydrogenation slower. This behavior is explained by a weaker interaction between the iminic nitrogen atoms and the Cu(111) surface in the high-coverage checkerboard structure, leading to faster metalation, and the stabilizing effect of T-type interactions in the CuTPP islands formed at high coverage after metalation, leading to slower dehydrogenation. Based on the amount of hydrogen released and the appearance in STM, a structure of the partially dehydrogenated molecule is suggested.

Abstract
We present a statistic evaluation of the azimuth orientations of flat-adsorbed oligopyridine molecules in disordered adlayers on Au(111) and (111) oriented Ag-adlayers on Ru(0001). On both surfaces, we find a strong preference for a set of twelve angles, which belong to one specific, unsymmetrical alignment and its symmetry equivalents. These angles are also those that exclusively occur in more densely packed, ordered structures on the same surfaces. We describe a geometric fitting algorithm, which correctly predicts these angles, and which only requires the substrate lattice and the positions of the nitrogen atoms within the flat-adsorbed molecule as input parameters. Such predictions are particularly valuable to reduce the parameter space in structure simulations [C. Rohr, M. Balbás Gambra, K. Gruber, E. C. Constable, E. Frey, T. Franosch, B. A. Hermann, Nano Lett. 2009, 10, 833].

Abstract
Through the illustration of key examples that have recently appeared in the literature, the intention of this review is to provide a perspective of current advances on the molecular recognition at the interfaces aimed at the engineering of multifunctional organic-based materials. The great interest in such systems has been motivated by the need to fabricate smaller and smaller components in order to improve, for example, the information storage capabilities of classical silicon-based devices. Although great progress has been achieved on the exploitation of "top-down" approaches, strong hope is now put on the development of hybrid devices in which the elementary components are replaced with single organic molecules. Nevertheless, the drive towards such devices is restricted by both their stability and difficulties to precisely control and manipulate the structural organisation at the molecular level. To overcome these restrictions, the use of nanotemplated surfaces featuring porous domains in which responsive functional molecules can be precisely accommodated at the single-molecule level is one of the most promising approaches. In the first part of this manuscript, we therefore illustrate the main engineering strategies [1) through non-covalent interactions, 2) surface-confined covalent reactions and 3) assembly of pre-organised cavities such as synthetic macrocycles] currently in use to create two-dimensional (2D) patterned surfaces displaying porous structures at the nanoscale level. Such networks, featuring periodic hollow domains (controllable both in shape and size), are of particular significance as their cavities can be used as receptors for the recognition of remotely controllable functional molecules. In the second part, the confinement of molecular guests within the cavities is discussed, emphasising the selectivity and dynamics of key assemblies, with a particular focus on the biomolecular recognition and post-assembly covalent functionalisation, which could provide the opportunity to fabricate devices currently beyond our reach on an unprecedented precision and efficiency. All the examples will be discussed in terms of structural organisation as studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) techniques.
