Surface-induced selection during in situ photoswitching at the solid/liquid interface

Here we report for the first time a submolecularly resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study at the solid/liquid interface of the in situ reversible interconversion between two isomers of a diarylethene photoswitch, that is, open and closed form, self-assembled on a graphite surface. Prolonged irradiation with UV light led to the in situ irreversible formation of another isomer as by-product of the reaction, which due to its preferential physisorption accumulates at the surface. By making use of a simple yet powerful thermodynamic model we provide a quantitative description for the observed surface-induced selection of one isomeric form.

Reversible control over molecular recognition in surface-bound photoswitchable hydrogen-bonding receptors: towards read-write-erase molecular printboards

The synthesis of an anthracene-bearing photoactive barbituric acid receptor and its subsequent grafting onto azide-terminated alkanethiol/Au self-assembled monolayers by using an Cu(I) -catalyzed azide-alkyne reaction is reported. Monolayer characterization using contact-angle measurements, electrochemistry, and spectroscopic ellipsometry indicate that the monolayer conversion is fast and complete. Irradiation of the receptor leads to photodimerization of the anthracenes, which induces the open-to-closed gating of the receptor by blocking access to the binding site. The process is thermally reversible, and polarization-modulated IR reflection-absorption spectroscopy indicates that photochemical closure and thermal opening of the surface-bound receptors occur in 70 and 100 % conversion, respectively. Affinity of the open and closed surface-bound receptor was characterized by using force spectroscopy with a barbituric-acid-modified atomic force microscope tip.

High-tech applications of self-assembling supramolecular nanostructured gel-phase materials: from regenerative medicine to electronic devices

It is likely that nanofabrication will underpin many technologies in the 21st century. Synthetic chemistry is a powerful approach to generate molecular structures that are capable of assembling into functional nanoscale architectures. There has been intense interest in self-assembling low-molecular-weight gelators, which has led to a general understanding of gelation based on the self-assembly of molecular-scale building blocks in terms of non-covalent interactions and packing parameters. The gelator molecules generate hierarchical, supramolecular structures that are macroscopically expressed in gel formation. Molecular modification can therefore control nanoscale assembly, a process that ultimately endows specific material function. The combination of supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and biomedicine allows application-based materials to be developed. Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering using molecular gels as nanostructured scaffolds for the regrowth of nerve cells has been demonstrated in vivo, and the prospect of using self-assembled fibers as one-dimensional conductors in gel materials has captured much interest in the field of nanoelectronics.
